Surnames: ALLAN, DUNLAP, MUTCH, TOMPKINS, Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ih.2ADE/1188 Message Board Post: Obit James Allan Is Taken By Death; Funeral Today Prominent Farmer Passes Away Sunday Afternoon Near Lynnville James Allan, highly respected and long time resident of Mrogan county passed away at 2:05 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Aug. 16, 1931, at his home three miles east of Lynnville. He was 80 years old. In his passing the county looses one of its best known and substantial citizens. Mr. Allan's life was one of work, service and friendship. He was a genial, robust man who made friends easily and retained them through his life. He was born at Bathgate, Scotland, March 31, 1851, a son of Peter & Jane Dunlap Allan. His father was a baker by trade and the family came to Morgan county when James Allan was two years old. Peter Allan was for some years a baker at the Illinois School for the Deaf when that institution was in its infancy. Mr. Allan was united in marriage with Christina O. Mutch of near Murryville when a young man. Practically all of his life was devoted to farming. He resided in Jacksonville for a few years, but returned to the farm where his interests were centered. He was a man of excellent habits and lived religiously, taking an active part in movements for the betterment of his community and county. He was a member of Wesley Chapel M. E. church of the Jacksonville circuit. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Christina Allan; five children, Mrs. S. J. Tompkins, Springfield; James Wilbert Allan, Jacksonvillle; Mrs. Ernest Million, Murryville; Mrs. Leslie Lewis, Jacksonville, and Mrs. Allan Gordon, Lyle, Minn. Brothers and sister surviving are John R. Allan, Jacksonville; Mrs. Margaret Middleton, Jacksonville; Robert P. Allan, Riggston; Mrs. Agnes Scott, Woodson, and Mrs. Mary Sturdy, Lynnville. The funeral will be conducted at the family residence east of Lynnville at two o'clock this afternoon. Interment will be made in Diamond Grove cemetery.

Allan, a lifetime resident of Morgan county, occured at 6:30 o'clock Saturday morning at the family home 6 1/2 miles south west of Jacksonville in the Point neighborhood. Death followed and extended illness. Mrs. Allan was a daughter of William and Hannah Dobson Groves and was born August 31, 1865 in the Point neighborhood. She was united in marriage with John R. Allan July 30 1885. Three children were born to this union, Jennie Belle preceded her mother in death April 10, 1911. In addition to the husband the survivors are two sons: William H. Allan of Rural Route 2 and John Floyd at home; one sister, Mrs. Belle Ranson. One sister Etta and three brothers, George, James and John Groves preceded Mrs. Allan in death. The funeral will be held at 3:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Williamson Funeral Home, where the remains were taken. Interment wil be made in Diamond Grove cemetery . Obit Mrs. Elizabeth Allan Services for Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Allan, wife of John R. Allan, were conducted Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock at the Williamson Funeral Home. Dr. M. L. Pontius of the Central Christian church officiated and interment was in the Diamond Grove cemetery. The funeral was largely attended. Music was furnished by a quartet consisting of Harold Hamel, Gerald Heaton, Albert McNeely and Edwin Gordon, with Miss Virginia Heaton at the piano. The numbers were "Going Down the Valley", and "In The Garden." Mrs. Earl Hempel sang a solo, "When They Ring Those Golden Bells." The flowers were cared for by Grace Middleton, Thelma Allan, Mildred Allan, Frances Heaton and Mrs. Paul Strubbe. Casket bearers were Robert Scott, Leslie Lewis, Clyde Sturdy, Clifford Allan, Scott Holmes and Clarence Ranson.

Coultas of Riggston Died After Illness Laura F. Coultas, widow of the late Elbert J. Coultas of the Riggstown community passed away Saturday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Megginson, southwest of the city, following a brief illness. Laura Gibbs, the daughter of John and Mary Tankersley Gibbs, was born near Lynnville, September 1, 1861. On Oct 7th, 1880 she was married to Elbert J. Coultas. To this union four children were born. One son, Clyde, and Mr. Coultas preceded her in death. The following survive: Mrs. Fred Megginson, and Mrs. Robert Middleton of the Lynnville community, and Roy J. Coultas of Riggston, also four grandchildren, Clyde and Elizabeth Coultas, Robert and Elbert Middleton; three brothers and two sisters; Edgar Gibbs and Mrs. Emeline Babb of Jacksonville; Ben Gibbs and Mrs. Allan McCullough of Winchester, and Jesse Gibbs of Stockton, Calif. Two sisters and one brother preceded her in death, Mrs. Etta Hawk, Miss Nellie Gibbs and John Gibbs. Mrs. Coultas will be missed in the homes of her children and in the community in which she spent her entire life, of a pleasing disposition and temperment, she endeared herself with those whom she came in contact. A member of Riggston M.E. Church and always interested in its activities and its welfare. The remains will be moved from the Megginson home to the home of her son, Roy, near Riggston at noon Sunday where services will be held on Monday afternoon at two o'clock with the interment in Diamond Grove Mausoleum. Obit Funerals Mrs. Laura Coultas Funeral services for Mrs. Laura Coultas were conducted at two o'clock yesterday afternoon from the home of her son, Roy, of near Riggston. Rev. Francis E. Smith officiated. Music was furnished by Esta Lou McCullough, Mrs. Luther Coultas, Mrs. Roy Kaltschnee, Mrs. Allan McCullough, Mrs. Clifford Allan, and Miss Beilby Leach, who sang "Sweet Hour of Prayer" and "Shall We Gather at the River." Miss Leach sang as a solo the selection "Golden Bells." The flowers were cared for by Mrs. Harry Hadden, Mrs. George Coe, Mrs. Frances Rowe, Mrs. Annie Smith, Miss Martha Gibbs and Miss Mary Coultas. The bearers were Everett Gibbs, Allan Allan McCullough, James Wilson, Jack and Albert Coultas. The body was placed in the Diamond Grove Mausoleum.

    3. Mr. Harold W. Herrin Harold W. Herrin, 70, of Jacksonville died Thursday morning, September 20, 2001 at Passavant Area Hospital. He was born July 11, 1931 in Jacksonville the son of Clarence Alford and Alice Lorene Menezes Herrin. He is survived by two sisters, Wanda C. Gimbel of Jacksonville and Vicky L. Bryant of Bradenton Beach, Florida. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd Edmond Herrin and Terry Lee Herrin and two sisters, Sandra Kay Herrin and Eunice J. Miley. Mr. Herrin had worked at Illinois College. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and a member of Faith Tabernacle Church. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 27, 2001 at Jacksonville East Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Faith Tabernacle Church. Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. I am researching this family above for my son-in-law, who never knew he had this family until a few years ago. The family of 3 later moved to North Platte, Lincoln Co., NE. and remained there up to the time of their deaths.     3. Hello, Does anyone out there know of any funeral homes in business in 1884-1890 where records may have been kept? I'm looking for any information regarding the burials of my gr. grandfather (tombstone indicates he died in 1884) and grandmother (hers indicates she died in 1890.) He was buried as LEWIS A. BANEY and she was buried as FANNIE E. SHERRILL BANEY. They are buried in the Bethany Cemetery, South Fork Township in Christian Co. I'm grateful for any help--I can't find a trace. Thanks Marsha

    3. Hello All! Well, the robins are back here in Upstate New York and so are the red winged blackbirds! The geese have been flying over for some time now and we finally saw our lawns two weeks ago. Overnight we expect 7-9 inches....spring will come, won't it?? I'm actually writing to see if anyone knows where I might locate records from 1888 for Anderson Funeral Home in Morgan County (Meredosia I think). I'm hoping their records would indicate where a person was buried. I got a copy of the death register for William Henry Hesencamp, died September 26, 1888.
