    2. If you have not been to the 1900 US Census, it might help. You can find it at Heritage Quest on the internet. It is a fee for service site. BUT, here in Denver, I access it from home for free via the Denver Public Library. Your local library may offer you similar free access or may even have the census on microfilm as Denver's does. gbyork -- tmwjr13@yahoo.com wrote: Return-Path: <ILMORGAN-L-request@rootsweb.com> Received: from mx07.nyc.untd.com (mx07.nyc.untd.com [10.140.24.67]) by maildeliver22.lax.untd.com with SMTP id AABAMQV2KA7UQ6XJ for <geobardsley@juno.com> (sender <ILMORGAN-L-request@rootsweb.com>); Fri, 28 May 2004 07:39:06 -0700 (PDT) Received: from lists5.rootsweb.com (lists5.rootsweb.com [66.43.18.41]) by mx07.nyc.untd.com with SMTP id AABAMQV2KAKH7HWA (sender <ILMORGAN-L-request@rootsweb.com>); Fri, 28 May 2004 07:39:05 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from slist@localhost) by lists5.rootsweb.com (8.12.8/8.12.8) id i4SEZ9aG012444; Fri, 28 May 2004 08:35:09 -0600 Resent-Date: Fri, 28 May 2004 08:35:09 -0600 X-Original-Sender: tmwjr13@yahoo.com Fri May 28 08:35:08 2004 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: tmwjr13@yahoo.com Old-To: ILMORGAN-L@rootsweb.com Sender: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <MFMBM0299qkxCBmzBfJ00000b4c@mfmbm029.myfamilycorp.local> X-OriginalArrivalTime: 28 May 2004 14:07:13.0317 (UTC) FILETIME=[13199D50:01C444BD] Date: 28 May 2004 08:07:13 -0600 X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.38 Resent-Message-ID: <tb-EyB.A.PCD.d40tAB@lists5.rootsweb.com> To: ILMORGAN-L@rootsweb.com Resent-From: ILMORGAN-L@rootsweb.com Reply-To: ILMORGAN-L@rootsweb.com X-Mailing-List: <ILMORGAN-L@rootsweb.com> archive/latest/4159 X-Loop: ILMORGAN-L@rootsweb.com Precedence: list Resent-Sender: ILMORGAN-L-request@rootsweb.com Subject: [ILMORGAN] Thomas H Curtis & Sarah Elliott, need 1900 census lookup X-ContentStamp: 3:4:2409447480 X-MAIL-INFO:57a9b4512dd1ed40300131ed401199c41d6d193815253ded38151039217d01555dad7901b54d390111bd250d7025059dd94484a5e950a184a5d029f54d003d81999100cd61290010f0e98d40e9b0e5e4c95175317d595175d465fd2494946d755079511d357d40f4d121215d35b4051d41454d9d217d5538b530898564b5259d395d71e57460144449f959f9f9b0a96149502424c93da1f5e5d50d24cde584f1f4d194d1d154ed40f4dd5d5dfd55192119193019745511853940752d24a435d050949d35d44099fdd1b95430ddb5a584d58484818491a5cd64 This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. We have a cousin in Kansas City that has photos of Anna with notches removed from her ears. I haven't been able to contact her lately. Let me know if you have the title to the book the Shelburns wrote about the ordeal, or any additional information.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Ih.2ADE/385.3.2 Message Board Post: I'm no expert on Morgan Co. Cemeteries but might be of a little help. Are you sure that you have the right cemetery? Where did you find the phrase "on the banks of the Illinois River"? The cemetery you described is no where near the Illinois River which is MILES to the west. I am looking at my 1988 plat book of Morgan Co. As you can see, it is out of date. However, I found an item of interest for you. We now are in the process of getting a new four lane which bypasses J'ville on the west. There is an interchange up in the area near section 10. There is a pond of some sort which is probably in the SE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of section 10. It has been there for a while but I'm not sure when it was made. From that spot, you CAN see J'ville. Now, in the NE1/4 of the NW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of section 10 there is a cemetery on this plat map. It is on the west side of Gravel Springs Road. It is just south of Mauvaise Terre Creek. That road is about 1 1/2 lanes wide and has ! trees on both sides. I don't think you could see J'ville from there even if there were no trees. You have to go down a "hill" to get to the bridge. It could be that the cemetery is on the flat part of the land where the road goes downhill. There might be a pond there but I don't know. This cemetery is NORTH of old Route 104. The "pond" I'm thinking about near the new four lane is SOUTH of old Route 104. Mauvaise Terre Creek goes west to the river but in section 10, it is not any where near the river. It could be that the cemetery on Gravel Springs Road was on the banks of the creek rather than the river. Knowing the source of the "banks of the river" statement will be a big help. Have you checked the deeds to see where your ancestor owned land? That might be a clue about where the cemetery is. The part of Morgan Co. that touches the river is only six sections "tall" from North to South. Of course, since the river curves a bit eastward in the middle of the area! (to Meredosia) and then back westward, the "bank" is longer than six miles. Not much area if you are looking for a cemetery down there. There are cemeteries up on the bluffs from which you can see the river (or at least Meredosia). Could be that the "banks of the river" statement was "relative" (no pun intended) to how far a grave was from the river. Maybe you can post more info. here and someone else can fill you in. (The street in Jacksonville is spelled Mauvaisterre. It is pronounced Mova (rhymes with Nova) Star.) Somehow, my name and email address don't seem to get printed as posting a reply. So, feel free to contact me as follows. At least I can offer sympathy. Kathleen (STANFIELD) COOK rchrdcck@aol.com

Description reads: "This burial site was badly damaged during construction of a pond in1971. One upright tombstone under two oak trees can be seen from IL Rte. 104, which is a few yards north of this burial site. Several tombstones disappeared during construction of the pond and of the three remaining, one is in excellent condition, one is broken into two parts and one is badly smashed but still legible. The city of Jacksonville can be seen from this cemetery". Seven of my ancestors were buried in this site. I cannot tell if it is near a river as the description does not mention it.
