Posted on: Morgan Co. IL Query Page Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Morgan?read=255 Surname: Burnett, Jennings, Van Winkle, Crow ------------------------- Dot, I have been researching my ancestral connections in Morgan County for some time now. My g. grandfather, George W. Burnett m. Emma Jennings, was descended from the union of Isham Burnett m. Lucinda Van Winkle. The Van Winkles came from Winkle, Holland. According to my sources, they first settled in Maryland, later moving to Virgina, North Carolina, Lincoln & Wade Counties in Kentucky, and finally to Morgan County, IL. Their name was not originally "Van Winkle." Because their Dutch surname was so hard to spell and pronounce, they changed their name to Van Winkle. Many of the Van Winkles settled near Franklin, IL, and are buried there. My Burnett ancestors are also buried in Franklin, as well as in Waverly, which is nearby. Recently, I obtained a short bio on a Micajah Van Winkle, 1845-1930, which includes a photo of his wife. It lists his parents as Napoleon Bonapart Van Winkle and Sarah Crow. He was married to Augusta Virgina Roberts, d/o George & Margaret Roberts, on April 19, 1871. She was b. on Oct. 16, 1850, in Bloomington, IL. Augusta lived to be 101 years old and d. on March 20, 1952. I need to look at my files and see where Micajah Van Winkle fits in my family tree. I know that I have a Micajah Burnett who survived the CW, to return to Morgan County. He lived to be in his late 80s-early 90s. You may contact me at my home e-mail address: [email protected] Sincerely, Patricia Jordan

Dear Miriam, While I cannot help you with your specific request, I found a brief reference to the Sallee family in a book I have on Morgan County families. I thought it might be helpful. It is under a section on the Van Winkle family, and says that on the maternal line one of the Van Winkles married Charity Sallee. The Van Winkles had come from Holland to Maryland to VA to NC to Lincoln and Wayne Cos in KY to Morgan Co. It says the Sallees were Hugenots who came very early in the 17th century to VA. They were members of the group at "Manakin Town" near Richmond who had been given a grant of land. Juli Claussen
