    1. [ILMORGAN] Ritchie, Fred B. - Obit 1897
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Ih.2ADE/1133 Message Board Post: Waverly, Illinois, Saturday, March 6, 1897 SILENTLY SLEEPING __________________ Fred. B. Ritchie Passes Away. On Thursday, Feb. 18th, Fred. B. Ritchie was confined to his home in this city with what was at first supposed to be a case of nervous prostration. His family realized that he was in a serious condition, and called in Drs. J. W. Hairgrove, of Jacksonville, and J. J. Trible, of this city. A careful diagnosis was made and strong symptoms of a brain lesion were found to exist. It was thought by the physicians that the ailment could be made to yield to treatment, but despite the combined efforts of physicians and loving friends he rapidly grew worse. Friday evening following he sank into a coma, from which he never rallied, continuing so until Friday evening, Feb. 26, when, at 5:45 o'clock, the angel of Death slipped in and touched him, and his soul sped down the unseen river which silently flows onward and outward into the great unknown. His death came as a shock to the entire community and his numberless personal friends. Only a few days before he was upon the streets, at his ! accustomed place in his office, and mingling with his friends as was his wont, and although realizing that he was in a critical condition, in the breasts of all lingered a hope, which grew into almost a conviction, that he would be spared to more years of health and activity. But a higher power ruled and he was called from the joys and sorrows of a natural existence, from the adversities and prosperity of a human career, to sleep the silent slumber of a just man, before his God and his fellow-men. Frederick Barnard Ritchie was born in Carrollton, Ill., March 18, 1848, the only son of John H. and Mary Ritchie. When he was seven years of age his parents moved from Carrollton to Virden, Ill., where he grew to manhood. Here it was he first began his career in the newspaper business. Messrs. Reynolds, Milton & Hedley established the Record, and he was the first roller boy, doing the inking for the first edition of that paper. He learned the printers trade and followed it for several years, going with Wm. Milton from Virden to Greenfield, where the "Locomotive" was established. Here, in 1872, he was married to Miss Sarah Holliday, who, with one son, John H. Ritchie, survive him. Shortly after his marriage, upon the recommendation of his physician, he went on a farm, as the confinement of the newspaper office was telling upon his health. One year later he moved to Piasa, Ill., where, after a short residence, he moved to Chesterfield, Ill., At Chesterfield, in company with Mo! rris R. Locke and W. C. Maston, he published the Chesterfield Times until 1885, when he purchased The Waverly Journal of M. M. Meacham, and moved to this city. Since that time he has devoted his energies to the upbuilding of the Journal, and Waverly. His life's best work was given in behalf of the welfare of our people and our city. His every effort lent to the progress of our home city. Fred B. Ritchie was not a church man. He believed in the Supreme Power, but was never bounded by any limit of doctrine or creed. His life was his religion, based upon honesty, charity and morality, three virtues he possessed and practiced to the best of his ability. He never turned a deaf ear to the cry of want, or hesitated to contribute anything in his power to alleviate the sufferings of a fellow creature. Prominent in the councils of his party, he went though (through) political movements and came out with clean hands and a clear conscience. As a newspaper man he was fearless and independent, always advocating that which would uplift and ennoble, but hating sham and hypocrisy. As a husband and father he was kind and liberal, and will nowhere be more missed than in the family circle. He leaves to mourn his loss, beside wife and son, an aged mother and one sister, Miss Julia, of St. Louis, Mo. The funeral occurred at the family residence on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. A. S. Kaye, of the Congregational church, assisted by the Rev. Jay C. Hall, of the Christian church, after which the remains were taken to East cemetery for interment, where, in the presence of a vast concourse of people, the last sad rites ot the dead were performed. A select choir, composed of Messrs. F. R. Smedley and Will Turnbull and Misses Nannie Meacham, Ollie Dial and Hattie Hutchison and Mrs. Mary Riley, sang appropriate selections at the house and grave. Many beautiful flowers, fitting tributes of respect to the departed, were placed on the grave, the offerings of Mr. Wm. Waters, of Jacksonville; Mr. and Mrs. Ira Grimes, of Springfield; Mr. and Mrs. Jason Rohrer, of Rohrer; Dr. and Mrs. E. K. Blair, Mr. James E. Hutchison, Mrs. Frances Deatherage, Miss Mary McKee, Mrs. J. A. Rodgers, Mrs. Laycock, the W.T.C.U., the Y.P.S.C.E., and a handsome bunch from the "neighbors" of the family. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Jas. E. Hutchison, H. J. Rodgers, H. I. DeTurk, J. C. Deatherage, Jos. B. Lombard and W. D. Meacham. The relatives present from abroad were Mrs. Mary Ritchie, of Moberly, Mo., mother of the deceased; Miss Julia Ritchie, of St. Louis, Mo., a sister; Mrs. Maggie Dunsmore, of Springfield, a niece: Mr. E. B. Eldred, of Carlinville, a brother-in-law, and Mr. Chas. Eldred, of Chesterfield, a nephew. ___________________________________________________ Resolutions of Respect. At a meeting of the Waverly Bi-metallic League, held in their hall on Saturday evening, Feb. 27, 1897, the following resolutions of respect were unanimously adopted: Whereas, Death has visited our League and taken from us a member Frederick B. Ritchie, and removed from his family a beloved husband and father; therefore, in view of the loss we have sustained, and the still greater loss to his respected relatives, be it Resolved, That we, the members of the Waverly Bi-metallic club, hereby express our sense of bereavement at the loss of so faithful and gifted a member of this society and so worthy a citizen, husband and father. Resolved, further, That we hereby extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family and friends of the deceased, hoping that even in the sadness of their affliction they may yet find some consolation in knowing that the worth of his private qualities and the value of his public services are properly appreciated. Resolved, That these resolutions be spread on the records of our league, a copy be given to his grief-stricken family, and a copy be furnished the Waverly Journal for publication. Ira Shuff, Young M. Hodgerson, E. K. Blair.

    1. [ILMORGAN] Old Letters Left at Post Offices
    2. Marie Butcher
    3. Hello, I am sending this question to all of the lists I belong to because it may be a question others have as well as me (I hope!) Marian Dietrich from the OH Hamilton Rootsweb List kindly sent me information on a John WATSON who possibly is mine. Here's what she says: "In a listing of letters held at the Cincinnati Postoffice on April 2, 1816 is the name John Watson. There was a notation that 'few postoffices existed around Hamilton Co. in 1816. Letters were addressed 'Cincinnati' and every 3 months the postmaster published lists of persons for whom he was holding mail." My question is what happens to all of the unclaimed letters? Does anyone have an answer and I wonder if there is a way to acquire this letter if it is still unclaimed. Marie Ginter Butcher Elmira, NY --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! 1. Re: [ILMORGAN] Re: please read and PLEASE help with this dead end.
    2. Ray, I sympathize because I've lost my database more than once and had to rebuild it. There may be hope, though, that you and I can both retrieve our lost databases. See the following article that appeared on AOL's welcome page today: Good luck, Velma Neal Bailey Hard Drives Exposed We bought or salvaged ten used drives and found sensitive business and personal data on all but one. Tom Spring It's a chilly March Saturday at the Pit, a concrete holding pen for abandoned computer parts at the Needham, Massachusetts, town dump. Nearby, three locals wait patiently in their idling cars. An SUV pulls up. Driver James Curtin grabs an old PC from the back and puts it into the Pit alongside other CRT monitors and old computer chassis. Slowly the other men exit their cars and walk toward the discarded computer--one with a screwdriver in hand. Advertisement For these PC scavengers, the Pit is a gold mine for memory chips, processors, and other components that they use to build PCs on the cheap. But they also routinely find something else: business and personal data that prior owners have left on discarded hard drives. "[On] almost every hard drive I pull, I'll find a tax return or a resume," says David Burns, who describes himself as a Needham regular. The lesson for PC users? Old hard drives don't always die--or fade away. Often they are salvaged and reused in other computers. And when that happens, the data and sometimes-grimy secrets of previous users go with them.Properly sanitizing a hard drive before giving away or reselling a computer requires only a small investment of time and an inexpensive or free disk-erasing tool (see " <A HREF="http://aolsvc.pcworld.aol.com/computercenter/aol/article/0,aid,110012,pg,2,00.asp">Data Killing 101</A>"). But many people don't even do minimal cleanup. Data GaloreAn examination of ten used hard drives we bought or salvaged in the Boston area disclosed a wealth of sensitive data. On all but one of them, we found data, including confidential business, medical, and legal records; Social Security, credit card, and bank account numbers; e-mail; and even pornography. Most of the information was easy pickings--even on four drives whose previous owners had attempted to erase data, either by deleting files and emptying the recycle bin or by reformatting the disk--measures that simply conceal the data from the operating system. Not surprisingly, the equipment's former owners were shocked to learn that strangers had accessed their information."I went through my PC and thought I had thoroughly deleted everything," Curtin said of his old TriGem 486.A Boston computer store sold us a hard drive previously owned by an accountant--and crammed with four years' worth of his clients' payroll and tax information and employee Social Security numbers. The accountant said that his nephew, who worked at a computer store, had removed the drive while upgrading his old computer several months earlier. The accountant said that he never thought to ask his nephew what had become of the hard drive.Similarly, a Salvation Army store in Cambridge, Massachusetts, sold us a PC that had once belonged to an attorney; it still contained bank account numbers, an active America Online account (and a stored password), and draft legal documents on its hard drive. "I most certainly never expected my personal information would ever be more than just that--personal," said the attorney. He said his firm's IT consultant had promised to properly destroy the data. Our samples confirmed the findings of a study conducted earlier this year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Two graduate students, Simson Garfinkel (who is also a prolific technology writer) and Abhi Shelat, bought 158 hard drives on EBay and from online shops. Of 129 drives that worked, 69 had recoverable files and 49 contained personal information, including 3700 credit card numbers, medical data, and pornography. Only 12 of the usable drives had been properly purged."This is a serious problem," Shelat says. Businesses become vulnerable when they unwittingly share sensitive information. And individuals leave themselves open to identity theft, a potentially ruinous crime that the Federal Trade Commission received nearly 162,000 complaints about in 2002--almost double the 2001 total. Resurrected DrivesTossing your your old drive out with the trash is no guarantee that it--and your data--will find a quiet resting place in a landfill. And scavengers like those at the Needham Pit are only part of the picture. As more towns and cities ban PCs from their landfills, businesses are cashing in.Computer Salvage of New England collects old PCs and cannibalizes them for parts that it then sells. Similarly, the city of Cambridge pays a recycling company called Onyx Environmental Services to haul off PCs left for curbside pickup. Onyx salvages the parts and resells them.Research firm Gartner Dataquest reports that businesses and individuals took about 150,000 hard drives out of service in 2002. Meanwhile, reported incidents of data security compromised by improper disposal of unwanted PCs have increased exponentially, says Gartner research director Frances O'Brien."Companies don't think twice about giving hard drives a simple reformat and handing the PCs out to employees, charities, or whoever else can save them a buck on disposal costs," O'Brien says.Deleted or Hidden?Even when people reformat the hard drive, a motivated sleuth can retrieve data using tools such as <A HREF="http://pcworld.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=606753">Norton SystemWorks' Disk Editor</A> or the free <A HREF="http://aolsvc.pcworld.aol.com/computercenter/aol/file_description/0%2Cfid%2C22917%2C00.asp">Disk Investigator</A>.We did this on a drive purchased at the Super Computer Sale (a traveling computer fair), and uncovered research, e-mail messages, and a log of Web sites visited by employees at Fairfax Financial Holdings of Ontario, Canada."It shouldn't have happened," said Brad Martin, Fairfax's vice president of investor relations. "We are going to make sure that something like this never happens again." Another used hard disk we bought at the computer fair had no operating system. But we identified the previous owner--and extricated 20MB of data documenting activities unprintable in this magazine.Being able to recover deleted data can be useful: Ask anyone who's ever accidentally trashed a file. Hard drive data can help nail criminals, says Tom Galligan, owner of Electronic Evidence Recovery of Tiverton, Rhode Island. But honest PC users have a legitimate interest in destroying data when they discard an old PC. Curtin wishes he had been more careful with his old drive. "I'll never make that mistake twice," he says.

Tholken is my grandfather too. They came over on the Rebecka. Contact me at my email address for more info. Looks like we are cousins. The Tholken's Changed some of their names when they got here. It gets kind of confusing and hard to follow. I also have some pictures of some of the stones in the Jokisch Cemetary where they are burried. Thanks Bob Tucker
