Wow! I didn't know Civil War discharge papers could be found at the county level. Is this true everywhere, or just in Morgan County? Good luck. Morgan County courthouse is great. The people are very friendly and helpful. On my visit I was able to come home with a lot of goodies. The courthouse in Pike County was also very helpful. Both seem very organized. Suzi
I found the staff at JAGHS very friendly and very helpful. They have a wealth of information available there. I was only there for a short period of time the day I stopped by, and found out that they not only have information on MORGAN county, but on some of the other counties as well. I personally do not have a problem with paying the $1.00/pg for obit copies, because the way the had it organized they were very easy to find, and it made it worth my time, especially when the one in particular I looked for on film I couldn't get. (The day of that newspaper was not on film it had been lost or something, and the library didn't have it). Keep up the GREAT work JAGHS. ----- Original Message ----- From: <rnichols@irtc.net> To: <ILMORGAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, September 12, 2003 6:22 AM Subject: Re: [ILMORGAN] Contact for Morgan County, IL research > Yes the JAGHS now has to charge $1 per page for obits as they have been > copying all the obits onto acid free paper and organizing in binders by > year/alphabetically for the convience of their customers. Yes the JAGHS now has to charge $1 per page for obits as they have been copying all the obits onto acid free paper and organizing in binders by year/alphabetically for the convience of their customers. We have spent the last 5 years working on the obit books. Other regular copies are 25 cents a page. chatty (JAGHS vollunteer)
If you call the Library in Jacksonville, ask for a gentleman named Chris. He is a very nice young gentleman and extremely helpful. He even found a picture of an ancestor of mine in a book on the history of the city (or county, not sure which)! The people at the courthouse are very very nice and also extremely helpful. As quick as they found my Grgrgrandpa's Civil War discharge papers, they can't be disorganized. Do give these people a call, Morgan County has some VERY nice people! The Jacksonville Area Genealogical & Historical Society charges $1.00/page for obits, they do not have PROBATE information however. Also I do not know if they charge a rate for doing research for you but I would imagine they do. It is a $1.00/page for obits when you do the research yourself, as I was over there about 3 or 4 weeks ago myself. If you are looking for obits and have the exact dates, etc. you can look get them back to 1880 I believe at the library in Jacksonville, and the first 10 copies are free of charge, and then 10 or 15 cents after that; when you do the research yourself. I have no idea what they might charge for doing research for someone; but might be working making a telephone call to them about. I would also make a telephone call to the Historical Society and the Courthouse in Morgan county if I were you, check out all your options. I went with a friend today to the Adams county courthouse to do some PROBATE research (my first time I might add) and it was a joke very unorganized in the basement, so you might be in for some real time consuming efforts if Morgan counties is the same way. Good luck. ----- Original Message ----- From: <rnichols@irtc.net> To: <ILMORGAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 11, 2003 9:58 PM Subject: [ILMORGAN] Contact for Morgan County, IL research > > > > The Jacksonville Area Genealogical and Historical Society maintains a > > substantial amount of genealogical and historical matter in their > > society library. Harry S. Clayton's great grandfather was William H. CLAYTON who married Elizabeth "Betsy" WOODS {Robert WOODS, Sarah (CLAYTON?)} at Caldwell County, Kentucky September 19, 1816. According to the Franklin City Cemetery records on line, William H., a veteran of the Blackhawk War died 1853. Moses L. CLAYTON married Alpha ("Alfa") M. (MARTIN?) CLAYTON October 3, 1844 at Morgan County. The LDS records, which may be a commingling, show the parents of both Moses and Alpha to be William CLAYTON and Elizabeth WOODS. Are there two different sets of couples with these names are is this an outright mistake? At first blush, the WOODS/CLAYTON seem to be highly intermarried but it is improbable that Moses and Alpha are brother and sister. The marriage record received from Morgan County verified that Alpha was under age (under 18) and that her father had filed written consent. That written consent was not received with the marriage record so I do not know if that is an oversight or the consent filing is lost. A William C. CLAYTON seems to have married Betsy WOODS' sister Minerva. What is the relationship between William C. and William H. CLAYTON? I believe these CLAYTONS may be related to the CLAYTONS of Calloway County, Kentucky not too far from Caldwell County. Of Calloway County a James CLAYTON and Sarah "Sally" LONGSHORE (LAUNCHER) CROW had a daughter named Alpha Elizabeth. Also a Moses CLAYTON married there a Fanny SHIRLEY about the same time as William H.married Betsy WOODS in Caldwell County. Any opinion, any knowledge? Byron Nelson Byron Nelson
Please let this serve as introduction to the research and subsequent post that will be coming. This search I have been doing for only a little over a month and most of what I have been able to put together from census, archived list/genweb posts, Illinois statewide indices and LDS online records. So forgive any glaring ignorance I might have on this matter. These are not my relatives. This I am doing for my late wife's best friend whose maternal grandfather was Harry S. CLAYTON, the son of William H.(William H., Moses L) CLAYTON and Emma Mae SILLOWAY(SILLOWAY:Perley, Frederick W.). Harry S. was a furniture store(s) operator in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois. My most immediate roots is in Missouri where my mother and father were born and most ancestors go back there to at least third great grandparents. This is mostly in the Ozark Heritage Region but some in the French Corridor Region. I myself was born in St. Louis where I stayed until at about the age of 10-11, the family moved to Monroe County, Illinois where I remained until the finish of High School. Thereafter, four years were spent in Coles County, Illinois and then about one year in Sangamon County. For the last 30+ years Chicago has been my home. A maternal great-granduncle did live in Jersey County for a short time but for a longer time in Pike County, Illinois. As far as my Illinois ancestral connections they are Edgar County (BROWN, BRADSHAW) and Clark County (BLACK, BARTON, REESE). A collateral relative (SUMPTER) did spend time in Sangamon and Tazewell counties before moving on to Missouri as all of Illinois ancestors did. Byron Nelson
Hi.. In the 1930's Moore Heriford, who I believe was a son of your Marshal, ran a store in Nortonville. I believe he had a son, Marshal, who died during WWII. I remember staying all night at their house about 2 miles west of Nortonville with their son, Charles, who would now be in his 70's. The family moved away in the mid to late 40's. Meredosia -- called Dosh but those who know and love it, sits on the river. My ancestors lived there and we had lunch there a couple of Saturday's ago. I can't help with the logistics that you sited, but I can attest to the fact that my great grandfathers house which sits almost right on the river, is still there and he lived there a long long long time ago. Be happy to help in any way I can. I have the centennial book from Meredosia. Take care, JEanie Lowe
Sec 3, 10 and 15 are not along the IL River although they appear to be by and in Meredosia Lake. My atlas is 1951 and not a very good one. I can surmise that the land in Sec. 15, NW1/4 NW 1/4 and Sec 10 southern most 1/4, could have been partially in what is now the lake. Also Sec. 3 in southern most 1/4. I do not have the town lots for Meredosia. I can't swear to the facts of your ancestors land being in the middle of the IL River, but I do know that my ancestors farm circa 1850-60 in the Pearl, IL area is currently under at least 12 feet of sand and water. This estimate was made at least 30 - 40 years ago. The flooding has changed the course of the river over the years and consequently, depending on the time of your ancestors will, this could be the case with his land also.
