Hello all I am searching for some obituaries of family members in the papers I need 7 or 8 and have definite dates. Can anyone help me? I am out of state. Please contact me on my private email and I will talk about it in detail. All are Alton Telegraph, Litchfield Herald or Edwardsville Intelligencer. Thank you so much Dora dorac@comcast.net
Dear Dora, I know I can get you the obits from the Edwardsville paper at Morris Library here on the SIU Carbondale campus. I live at Carbondale. I'm not sure about the other 2 papers, but they are probably there. Morris has the largest collection of southern Illinois newspapers on microfilm around, and from the earliest years. They also have the major IL papers such as the Chicago ones, which are indexed. It is a wonderful resource. They also have the major IL papers such as the Chicago papers, which are indexed. Unfortunately, the staff will not do look ups for those who cannot visit the library themselves. However, this is not one of the volunteer services I normally provide, because it is such a hassle to go on campus, so expensive for parking, etc., and ends up being rather time consuming. My charge for newspaper searches (articles and obits) with a date or narrow date range: 1st search, $10; each additional, $3. I will digitally photograph the item for you in most cases, which can then be sent to you immediately via email. There are other wonderful resources at Morris, including most of the Germans to America volumes, the Passenger and Immigration Lists Bibliography series, and early county history books of the region. There is even a collection of early atlases and plat maps for IL counties, many of which provide the property owner's names and show the location of buildings on the property. Digital photos of these work well. I am available to do look-ups in any of these books (with a date or narrow range of years for an individual or family group in the ship passenger volumes) at the same rate as above. I am always willing to negotiate on large projects or swap research time. Montgomery County resources in which I volunteer to do lookups include Walter R. Sander's wonderful list of earliest settlers in Montgomery Co., IL and the Montgomery County Rural Schools Locations List. I have also posted an inventory of Lemen aka Baptist aka Mt. Kingston Cemetery near Walshville that my Dad and I made a couple of years ago on line at http://www.interment.net/data/us/il/montgomery/kingston.htm I have a few photos of stones from that cemetery that I am happy to share as well.
