    3. Hillsboro, Illinois, Friday October 20, 1916 Alvin Sanders Dead Alvin Sanders, the oldest man in the county except one, died at the Litchfield hospital Thursday morning at 8:30, aged 96 years, 9 months, and 24 days. Deceased was born in Adair County, Kentucky, Dec. 25, 1919. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Sanders came to Montgomery County in 1832 and settled on a farm near Bost Hill church. He (John Sanders) lived there until his death raising a family of 12 children, 8 boys and 4 girls. The boys were Alvin, John, Erving, Jeff, Elias, Robert, and Finley. The girls were Elizabeth, who married Easton Whitten, Nancy Jane who married James Brown, Rebecca who married John J. Bost, and Lavina who married Phillip V. Johnson. The boys are all dead except Robert who lives in Pana. The girls living are Nancy Jane Brown of Pana, and Luvina Johnson now living in Florida. All the Sanders boys and girls raised families. Alvin Sanders was married many years ago to Miss Chloe Hill and the following children were born to this union: J. L. Sanders of Fillmore, Henry T. who lives in Nebraska, Mary who married Daniel Cress and who died a number of years ago, Luvina who married Fletcher Gamble and who lives at Litchfield, Drucilla who married Henry Follis and who lives at Litchfield, Malissa who is married and lives in Texas. Another girl died in infancy. Alvin left here in 1856 and went west and nothing was heard from him for over 40 years. His friends all supposed he was dead, but he returned about 14 years ago and for the last four years he has been in the Litchfield hospital. His wife secured a divorce and married again, her second husband being "Uncle Billy" Simpson who was office county treasurer of this county. The funeral will be held this Friday morning at 10 o'clock at the residence of his son, Lafayette Sanders in Fillmore. Interment will be made in the Fillmore cemetery. The history of Alvin Sanders, if it could be written, would make an interesting book. He was a gold prospector and a bear hunter. He is said to have killed 21 grizzly bear. The first bear he killed weighed out 70 pounds and he sold the meat, he said for a dollar a pound! This spoiled him and he went hunting bear for a living. He used to remark that a man who would shoot one of these little black bears was a d----d coward. He said anybody could kill a black bear with an ax! He claimed to have made a fortune prospecting for gold but he lost most of it. He had enough to live on, however, but would not live with his children, preferring to stay at the hospital. He traveled all over...... I'm missing the last line of the article. Got cut off by the microfilm reader. I have in my notes that William Simpson was a widower when he and Chloe married in 1870. The 3 Simpson children in the household were William (20), John (17), and A. D. (14). William's age is a bit off from the 1860 census and Laura is missing. Lynne

    3. Every census where I find Charles/Alvin Sanders he is listed as being born in KY. In the 1860 census Chloe is not with him. The list of children seem correct to me. We had Mary Jane's birth year as 1848 but all of the census reports and her gravestone all list her date as 1842 and I know she married Dan Cress. The ages of the children are correct when compaired to the 1850 census. I have no doubt that Chloe and Charles Alvin Sanders are NOT together in 1860, that's why I asked the question "had she died" . The census shows she is NOT with the family and he is there with the children. Perhaps he left after 1860 to "hunt for gold." I have not checked the census for Chloe in 1860, I would think that is in order now....since I now know she is NOT dead and I know she is NOT with her family. They probably had gotten a divorce or were in the process. Since I did not find the name Charles or Alvin in 1880 he must be hunting for gold. Maybe I should look for him elsewhere. I am also assuming that I will find Chloe with her new husband. You did mention that Chloe is with the impson husband in Walshville in 1870 and listed that she has daughter Malissa with her. I found John Lafayette Sanders in the Elijah Tackaberry household in 1880 not in a Nelson household. 3. Mystery solved. I was looking through the 1910 census to see if I could find the notorious Charles Alvin Sanders and came across his son, John Lafayette. He had remarried Lunda Sophronia Cress in 1880. He and Lunda had a son----Shirley. He was 26 years old on the 1910 census, still living at home with John and Lunda. Also living in the household was mom--Chloe Simpson. She was 88 and widowed. So, perhaps Rufus and Shirley, 2 grandsons of the wayward Charles Sanders, pitched in to buy him a headstone. Lynne

    3. Linda, I had concluded the same--Rufus was a child of John and Rosetta Bost Sanders. You found John Sanders in the Nelson household in 1880? I found Lafayte Sanders in the Elijah Tackberry household in 1880. He must have moved around and gotten counted twice. As far as that 1860 census goes with the Charles Alvin Sanders family. I think there was a major transcription error. Charles was gone by 1860. He left in 1856 to hunt for gold. The head of household had to be Chloe. The age is right for Chloe, not Charles and the place of birth is Illinois, not Kentucky. Chloe remarried William Simpson in 1863 and they are found on the 1870 census living in Walshville. Daughter Malissa Sanders is the only Sanders child in the household along with 3 Simpson children. Cloe died October 29, 1913. I don't have a burial place for her. Charles returned around 1900 and died October 19, 1916. He is buried in the Glendale Cemetery as you mentioned in a prior email. I don't know who the Shirley Sanders, granddaughter of Charles Alvin might be. Maybe she was the wife of Rufus? I'll dig out the article I have on Charles Alvin Sanders. I can't remember if it was in Sanders Shiftings or something from the local newspaper. It was pretty interesting. I imagine Chloe was none too happy when her first husband showed back up after 45 years. I don't know if her 2nd husband was still alive, if so, there must have been a quick divorce or annulment from Charles!! Lynne

    3. On the 1880 census, Levi and Priscilla Hill Whitten have a Rufus A. Sanders living in their household. He is 1 years old and listed as a nephew. Both parents born in Illinois. I cannot find a sibling of either Levi or Priscilla who married a Sanders and had a child in 1879. Levi's sister, Ruth Whiten married Elza Creel Sanders but she died in 1848. Priscilla's sister Chloe married Charles Alvin Sanders but their last child was born in 1855. Maybe he's a great nephew from one of these 2 families? Any insights, help appreciated. Lynne

    3. The only thing I have on Rufus Sanders (besides seeing him in the 1880 census) is that he married Gretta M Lang. He was 52 at the time of their marriage and she was 37. She had stayed with her mom and dad until after her dad died in 1930. Made no sense to me, but it's true. Rufus 1st married Nellie Richmond, but I have not looked them up in the census. I think she died in 1919 or so. Gretta is buried in Glendale Cemetery (although it is not on my listing) The listing is old, one done years ago by Sanders class. I am supposing Rufus died in Montgomery County....if so I could look him up at the courthouse oen day when I have some time. > Lynne > > > ==== ILMONTGO Mailing List ==== > Visit the Montgomery County ILGenWeb Home Page! > http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmontgo/ > >

    3. Thanks to Linda Collins for supplying the Warren County, KY. Marriage Record information on Sarah Auzbrook and Jacob Tinker. I was hoping there might be a new tidbit or two, but no such luck. Thank you again Linda. Also, thanks to Patricia Martina for her offer to look it up at Decatur Library. Your support is greatly appreciated. Cordially, John E.
