I want to thank all of you that offered the Cress material. Actually I'm not really researching the Cresses. My family is the Browns & the Roberts of Irving, Montgomery Co. If anyone has any info on them, I would love to hear from you. I have to second the thought that this is a very friendly & helpful web site. Sometimes that is hard to find. ET, where do you live in MO? I live at the Lake of the Ozarks in Morgan Co. Tiss

Hey, If anyone has pictures of John (Jack) Scherer or his family or the Cress Family I would love to have them. Maybe from newspaper or anyone that is a family member. Thanks Et
This site is the Greatest!!!! You have all been so helpful. I knew this area was full of nice people. I visited Hillsboro for about 1 hour a couple of years ago to see where my grandmother was born. I wish I would have spent more time. I will have to come back soon. I am on lists from several locations in other states but you all take these requests to heart. I appreciate it very much. So here's a big THANK YOU!!! Elmer Thorn Missouri

I went to Litchfield Library and found the obit of John Jefferson Scherer who died age 89 at his home west of Hillsboro. He was oldest resident of the county. It gives him as a son of Mr. Mrs.. Eli Scherer. Funeral was at Hillsboro Lutheran Ch. and bur Cress Hill Cemt. This obit was very hard to read so I could not make a copy. It names the ch, the oldest one was Mrs L.W. Patton of Cassville, MO and 2nd was Mrs Charles Sanders of Deering, MO. Other ch. lived in CO and Hillsboro, IL. I checked the Blackwelder book and found Eli Scherer s/o Frederick and gson of Jacob Daniel Scherer. Eli was born in NC and mar lst. Miss Duke, He mar 2nd Lavina Cress born 2-19 1822 and died 10-3-1844 , He mar 3rd Martha Ann Grantham . It list children by all 3 of the women. Hope this helps in your search. You will find lots of info on these families at the Litchfield , IL Library. Tiss, No this isn't the same Catherine. Mine was born in 1840 and married John Scherer in 1858. There were lots of Cresses in that area. I even saw where a Cress married a Cress. So there seemed to be different branches of Cresses but probably all directly related. Sorry I can't help you on your Catherine. John Jefferson Scherer's father was Dr. Eli Sherer, native of Cabarras Co., NC. He was married 3X and died in 1844 when Jack was 7. He was living in Irving at the time. Jack did not want to live with his step-mother, so he went to live with his uncle. This information comes from a transcribed newspaper article of Jack's memories. I am a Cress & my aunt put a book together. I can photocopy the article for you. Please e-mail me privately with your address. Polley Ellen Cress Lawrence
Elmer, I have a Catherine Cress who married a cousin in 1830 in Montgomery Co. His name was David Diedrick Brown. I have an aprox. birth date of 1810 and a death date of 1860 in Montgomery Co. on her. I don't have her parents, but they were some of the earliest settlers. There was a connection with the Blackwelders. Were there two Catherine Cresses or is it the same one in a different marriage? Tiss
Elmer, I have the book "Semi-Centenarians of Butler Grove Township and a Brief History of the Village of Butler" by Rev. T. E. Spilman; Sept. 1878 The book has an index but I have discovered it is only an index of the people whose biographies are included. It doesn't include those names that are within the biographies. In the biographies section, included are: Mrs. Mary Scherer (wife of David) page 13 Jacob Cress (husband of Miss Helena Scherer) page 92 Mrs. Helena Cress (wife of Jacob Cress, daughter of Daniel and Rachel Scherer) page 93. I will be glad to transcribe these biographes and send them to you. In the history section: page 140 "The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ware's Grove was organized Dec. 24th 1860 under the pastoral labors of Rev. J. Livengood. The names of the original members are as follows: Jacob W. Scherer, Mrs. Electa Scherer, Henry Misenheimer, Mrs. Rachel Misenheimer, Mrs. Mary Scherer, Mrs. Rebecca A. Cress. The Church Edifice in which the congregation now worships was built in 1862, and dedicated in Dec. of the same year, the dedication sermon being preached by Rev. George A. Bowers." Hope this helps, Sue
Dear Elmer, This may not be of direct help re your specific questions, but recently I ordered and reviewed at LDS film of church and cemetery records from Montgomery Co. that included lots of info about Cress Hill Cemetery, including maps of the plots and who the lots were sold to, and many of the records were very early. Also, the church there had very early records of members and the formation of the church. Maybe this would be helpful. The church recs were film #1316514. Cem recs were film 1316518, with Cress being item 2.
