    3. The pension papers are a good place to start! You can order them from the NARA site: http://www.archives.gov/research_room/obtain_copies/military_and_genealogy_o rder_forms.html You want "Military Pension Claim Files, 1775-1916". The full file is $37.00; 25 page version (they pick the 25 with the most genealogical material) is $14.75, I believe. 3. Dewey, I am a descendent of Peter Rowe. I have only 2 known sons for him with wife, Polly Porterfield. One was Silas S. Rowe, born June 1889. The other son was Fred and I have his wife as Anna - they married in 1909. I have nothing on Silas, except that he was living in Schram City in 1928 - according to his father's obit. It's possible that he went by a middle name of Sam. How much info would you like on the Rowe family? 3. Hi, Janet, how are you: I just ran the Illnois State Archives and came up with a Sim S. Row, died in Schram City on April 6, 1947. There is no Polly and no Ina Row listed for the years that the state has from 1916-1950, I believe. I forgot to look. There is a Peter Joshua Row died in Hillsboro on May 2, 1928. That sounds like father and son to me, how about you? The only one left in Taylor Springs was Willard Row, who died on October 25, 1916. If Peter died in 1928, Polly could have preceded him in death. Ina could still have been alive and probably was since she was only 46 when Sim died. That is if Sim in Sam. Mildred was working off of murky records in Montgomery county. I got one and I couldn't read it. Not that it wasn't plain, it was because the handwriting was terrrible. Write me private and I will give you my url to read How does that all sound to you? What does the death certificate for Sim S. say? Does it say he was married to Ina Crites? Dewey

    3. In re: Row family. I have this in the Crites Book. It says "Ina Crites born (?), daughter of James and Myrtle Crites married Sam Row on April 26, 1919 at Hillsboro, Illinois, a son of Peter and Polly (Peterfield) Row of Taylor Springs, Illinois (near Hillsboro). Sam was a railroad worker". Ina Crites Row is/was my Aunt. Any descendants of those two, feel free to contact me. I will add it to my genealogy journal. I do not have the exact date of Ina's birth. Third child Louise was born December 28, 1902, and died in infancy. Allowing time between gestation, birth and ovulation, March 30, 1900 (Stella) to Dec 28, 1902 (Louise) means that Ina would have had to be born in late summer (August/September?) of 1901 making her 18+ years of age when she married Sam. 2. John & Clara Row are buried at Clear Springs Cemetery, rural Hillsboro. John M. Row born Dec 1870 - died 14 May 1943 Clara R. Row born 27 Nov 1878 - died 19 Sep 1956. John & Clara owned 40 acres of land with a small 4 room house when John died in 1943. In Sept. 1943, Clara sold the place to my grandparents. Clara then, I believe, moved into Hillsboro until her death. I also show the following: Willard Row, died 25 Oct 1916 at Taylor Springs, to be buried at Clear Springs (per death certificate). Benj. Franklin Burgan, died 11 Dec 1916 at Litchfield, to be buried at Clear Springs (per death certificate). I am caretaker of the Clear Springs Cemetery and do not have any tombstones for these two individuals. I would be interested if anyone has more proof of these burials or their connections to John & Clara Row. Carol Berry

    3. Hi Judy, Thanks for that. You wouldn't happen to have a guy by the name of SODERSINSKI by any chance No guarrantee on the spelling though. When I was up North with the Far East Fleet in 1962-3 I met this guy off the USS Topeka. He was a Marine and came from Hillsboro, Illinois. Four of us, from HMNZS Taranaki (NZ) were dressed in civilain clothes and had met up with four Americans the day before. We met again and as time went by other Americans gathered around us until there were a dozen of them. Then in walked two others. One said "Hi you guys", and I replied Hi. He looked at me and said "Hey...you're not of the Topeka". I replied "who says I'm not off the Topeka?" He thought for a minute and said "who's the Captain?" To this I replied, "How the hell should I know?" And another American...in uniform said..."Yeah....even I don't know that!" A change of tactics..."Where are you from?' he asked. "Illinois." I replied. "Hey I'm from Illinois....whereabouts?" Hillsboro, I said. "Hey I'm from Hillsboro...whereabouts?" By now he was getting excited...a fellow American from his own town! Then I remembered my pen pal Peggy Beach, whom I had written to from school when I was about 8 -9 years old. Couldn't remember her address of course as that had been 9 -10 years earlier. "Beach Road", I replied. "Na....I don't know that road". "Of course you know Beach Road!", I led him on. Na...don't know that road." "You must know Beach Road....everyone knows it!" I came back. "Na....I don't know Beach Road." "Of course you know Beach Road", I pushed him a wee bit further. Then his face lit up "Oh...of course...I know Beach Road." By this time all the Americans are silently splitting their sides. "Yes," I said, "I am NZ16817 off HMNZS Taranaki!". For the rest of the night he went around trying to talk like a Limey. He also gave me one of his dog tags which I kept for years....most probably still have it too if it wasn't for my three sons playing with it as they grew up. It said he was RC (Roman Catholic?) if that helps. I carried the nickname of Speed and he may remember me by that. As for has it been that long...I just had my 40th wedding aniversary...scary eh! 15th February 1964. Five kids....15 grandkids...and one on the way. 3. Dewey, I have the maps that were done in about 1981. I have been out on Cresshill Lane. It turns to the right (west) after you pass where George File once lived and then past where the Chumleys once lived (in the 1850's-60's) and goes to Mr. Chumley's place. According to the map it would be south of the turn in the road. I did not see a way to go on south. It appears it would be some 2 miles north of Rt 185 and some 1/2 mile south of Chapman T Trail. Just about midways from Chapman Trail is an old barn type bldg on the east side of the road. This is where my g-g-grandfather's place was. They moved there is about 1843...my g-g- died in 1863. After my g-grandfather and g-grandmother were married they moved to my g-grandmother's home place. They tore down the old house and built a new one in the late 1800's. My g-grandmother died there in 1925. Later it was rented for several years. My grandfather sold the place somewhere btw 1925-1940. I suppose I could go to the courthouse and look up the exact date. The Robert Dent Moore family lived across the road from the George File homestead. Robert Moore's daughter married my g-grandfather's son (James Harry "Bun" Barricklow) from his first marriage. >From the map it appears the cemetery should be some 1/4 - 1/2 mile south of where the road turns west. Hopefully the cemetery has not been destroyed. 3. I hope so, too, but those old places surely don't last long. You would be surprised how many kids have old tombstones in their rooms and the parents think it's "cute". You know, the small kind that were slabs. Take a look at my site. I have photos of the New Douglas cemetery on it. It is almost finished. Waiting for the death certifcate of uncle clarence. Find out what jealous husband shot him.
