Myra, put Walshville Illinois in your search field. The population is 44 and the number of families is 12. There is a Christian church there. If there is a cemetery there, there can't be many bodies in it. Take a look and find out if he is buried in Walshville. I have been so bold as to write the village council and ask someone to walk up to the cemetery and look. And they will. They may also have a cemetery book. Of course, that is if he was buried in Walshville. I would wager that if he died there, he is buried there. Or in a nearby town As his son assumed his business, a blacksmith shop, and if Walshville has any records at all, you will find Frank Finley. If you have his notice of death, where was it posted? If Walshville is near a large town, that is the newspaper that would have published his death and it will say where he is buried. I was raised in a small Illinois town and everyone knew everthing about everyone. Try it, anyway. Can't hurt. Hillsboro is the County seat of Montgomery county and the Clerks name is Sandy Leitheiser. Rev. Everts
How kind of you to reply! My Frank Firley was born about 1838. His first wife was Elizabeth Wenner; they married in 1861 in Madison County (I have that record). Elizabeth died in Worden, Madison County, sometime between the birth of her last child in 1875 and the time of the 1880 census. Unfortunately I have no record of her death or burial either. (Madison County Courthouse has no record either.) He remarried in 1881, to a Hilde Will, in Edwardsville, Madison County. The last record I have of him is a notice of his death in Walshville in 1899. He was a blacksmith by trade and his son continued the trade in Walshville, so I am certain that I have the correct Firley. I have scoured the cemetery records for Madison County and can't find either one of them buried there. Walshville and Montgomery County are new territory for me. Any suggestions? Lydia F. Boher married John F. Finely in Knox County. Could that be it?
Was his wife's name Lydia, there is a marriage in 1862 between John F and Lydia. Genealogy site below: You can choose friends; you are stuck with relatives. http://community-2.webtv.net/Evertshistory/EVERTSCRITESafamily http://community.webtv.net/Deweyphotos/EVERTSCRITESFAMILY
If he was 61, he was born in 1839. Married circa 1860. If he was marrried in Illinois, they have marriage records. In what county is Mount Olive? If it is in Montgomery, that is a difficult County to search, believe me. I ran the marriage records for Frank Finley. I will go back and see if there is a John married circa 1860. What was his wife's name? Rev. Everts
I'm struggling to find the burial site and the correct date of death for a Frank (John Frank) Firley. According to the Mt. Olive Herald he died in Walshville in April of 1899. According to the St. Louis Public Library Obituary Index, he died on April 10, 1907. (I tend to believe that the 1899 date is the correct one as he would have been 61 years old.) I have written to the Montgomery County Courthouse, but they have no record of his death on either dates. I am unfamiliar with the area. Can anyone suggest which cemeteries are in the vicinity? Are there published inventories of these cemeteries available? Any other suggestions as to how I might proceed? Adding to the difficulty was the sometimes incorrect spelling of the name Firley. On a few occasions I have seen it spelled "Firle" or even "Ferli". Many thanks for any help you can give me. Myra Dittes
Chandra, The Clear Springs Cemetery was began in about 1820 next to the Clear Springs Primitive Baptist Church. The land was donated by Elder James Street, the preacher in Montgomery County. The Church had control of the cemetery until it disbanded in the early 1890's. At that time the Clear Springs Cemetery Association was established and registered with the State of Illinois. From that time until present, there are records kept for the secretary & treasurer. There were no records kept for burials or the sale of burial lots until the latest section to the cemetery was purchased in the 1930's, then only the purchaser of the lots. We do not know what became of any records that the church may have kept. There are no empty graves near John & Clara Row in the cemetery. My grandparents house would have been RR 2, Hillsboro. Yes, the house is still standing and is lived in by my son. My sister owns 20 acres with the house on it and I own the other 20 acres. If you ever get to the area, or wish more information, please contact me directly and I will be more than happy to answer more specific questions about the house, address, or what I can remember my grandmother telling me about Clara. John and Clara Row do have stones at Clear Springs. They are buried on the far SW side of the cemetery. I have a picture stored in my computer. Clara and John are in the newest section of the cemetery. It would be doubtful, but not impossible, that her father would be buried near she and John. There are other marked graves in the row. Carol, Thank you for sharing this information! I believe Benj. Franklin Burgan to be the father of Clara (Burgan) Row, though all of the other records for him show the name as Frank, but his marriage record (Francis). Does the address given on his Death Certificate match the mailing address for your grandparents house? (Informant: Mrs. J. M. Row Litchfield R.R. #3) You mention that there is no tombstone. Does the cemetery have records going back to 1916 that show the plots puchased? Does anyone know if the spot next to Clara is blank (but perhaps not empty)? I would also like to know if the house is still standing and if anyone can help us figure out the exact land location in case we get to Illinois someday? Of course we would not bother the current owners, but knowing the location would make searching county land records easier. 'Fraid not, Tiss. My James B. was born in Ireland and somehow wound up in Tuscumbia, AL, in 1855 where he married a Flower of the South, Martha Landtroop. WhattheHell a Catholic Irishman was doing in Redneck country, I'll probably never know! Hello, I am researching the family of Jacob Baker and Annie (Turner) Baker who moved to Montgomery County from White County circa 1830. Jacob died Dec 28, 1840 in Montgomery Co. Annie died between that date and 1850. Their son, Jacob Jr. born Sep 6, 1811 in Pulaski Co, KY and died Dec 19, 1853 in Montgomery County married (1), Nancy Farley on Jun 14, 1828 in White County, IL. She died in 1853 in Montgomery County and he married (2) Emmaline Bagwell on Nov 3, 1853 in Montgomery Co. They were married only a few weeks when Jacob Jr. died leaving Children; Thomas, Elizabeth, Nancy, Mary, Perlina, Berry, Louisa, Stephen, Mariah, James, and Johanna. I would like any information of their descendants. Respectfully, Ardilla Johnson
Dewey, Peter Joshua Rowe was myggreat-grandfather. He married 3 times. 1) Eliza Jane Silvey in 1868 - she died 1880 2) Polly Ann Porterfield in 1883 - she died abt 1907 3) Julia Ann Stewart in 1908 - she died 1931 Peter had children with his first 2 wives. My great-grandmother, Emma Jane Rowe, was his daughter by Eliza Jane. Peter is buried in Crabtree Cemetery in Montgomery Co. IL. I don't know yet where Eliza is buried, as she died in Jersey Co. IL. A question, I checked the 1910 Montgomery Co. IL census for the Crites family. I found James Sr 36 Myrtle 30 James Jr 12 Lester 9 Henry 6 Where is Ina? Is this the wrong family? I could not find them in 1900. Will send a genealogy file to you.
