One more thing: people lie. My Uncle was living with his parents. in 1900 in Illinois. the census was taken in May. Granny ran off with the kid in tow to California in June. In July, they were both counted again. In California. Census taker in Illinois spelled the last name EvertEs. In California, Census taker spelled it Everts. The United States census is NEVER reliable. Don't rely on it to prove a point. Dewey
Hi, Have you the census itself, or do you have an abstract of it? THAT is important. And the census is NEVER 100% correct. It is simply a process for counting the number of people and the taker does not EVER ask for proof. I mailed MINE in. I am 75 years old and have NEVER sat down with a census taker and been interviewed. NEVER. Dewey
I have a dilemma and wondered if anyone else has run into this. As I have checked the 1920 census, I find my gg-grandparents. It shows my gg-grandmother, gg-grandfather, and two of their children. So what is the problem? My gg-grandfather passed away in 1914. So why is he appearing in the 1920 census? I have proof that he passed in 1914. I have proof from his headstone and from his estate records. So why would someone say he was still alive in the census? Has this ever happened to anyone else? I know this is the right family. It has the same wife, same children, and the family is living next to one of his other children. I just don't know what to make of it. Thanks for helping me to make sense of this. Tammy tammyw@digitekpro.com
I have had two instances of this in the same year and same family, but within the guidelines of the census. You see, my great-great grandfather Milton Brown West, who lived in Mobile, Alabama, suffered from cancer and was near death as the census started up in June, 1900. He died on June 9th, 2 days before the census enumerator knocked at their door. Since he was living on June 1, 1900, he was required to be enumerated and this was done. The same thing happened with his son W.M.'s first wife, Josephine. Married barely six months, Josephine took ill with toxemia and died on June 2, 1900, exactly a week before Milton. Again, the census enumerator showed up at William Milton's door (not the same residence as his parents') and she was enumerated, even though she was deceased. I have yet to find such a discrepancy as yours, however. Hi Bill, I don't have anything on the McBrides except for the Andrew Jackson McBride who married my grgr-aunt Elizabeth Sutton. I do know Andrew Jackson was in his parents household in the 1850 in Greene County. They worked their way over to Montgomery from Greene via Clyde in Macoupin Co. And, because of the McBrides already in Montgomery Co, that may have been the reason for going to Montgomery. Elizabeth and Andrew could be in Asbury unmarked. Thanks. Hi Gloria, Here is what I have on the McBrides in my line. There is a strange similarity in the information that you provided and are asking for. Nancy Catherine McBride, b June 1839 in Illinois. Father was James McBride born ca 1818 in Tennessee. Mother....best that we can tell is Dicy (not sure but probably a nickname)? (last name unknown). Nancy's siblings seem to been Miley, William, John, Robert, James R., and Walter A. The McBrides lived in the Montgomery County Illinois area at that time. Nancy was the second wife of my GG Grandfather Archilbald McCallum. They married in January of 1864 in Mongomery County. Probably married in Hillsboro Illinois. Were married by the Justice of Peace. Guess that means it was a civil ceremony? Nancy died in Apr of 1901. She and Archibald are buried in Asbury Cemetery just south of Raymond, Illinois and that is in Montgomery County just north of Butler, Illinois. There are lots of McCallum's buried in that cemetery. Tammy, I often find myself looking for obscure family history books as a professional genealogist. I have had fairly good success using interlibrary loan through my local public library. Sometimes I do a check for the book first on WORLDCAT through my nearby university library's website in order to get a list of libraries in the US that have that book, and then take this list to my librarian who handles interlib loans. There are also a couple of message boards on Rootsweb devoted to buyers and sellers of such books. I can't give you the exact link, but I have browsed these boards and see people posting that they are looking for a particular book and apparently book sellers monitor these boards and reply if they have one available. Good luck Juli Claussen Search & Genealogy Services ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tammy White" <tammyw@digitekpro.com> To: <ILMONTGO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 03, 2004 8:09 PM Subject: [ILMONTGO] Whitten and Allies Families Book > Any idea how to get copies of a book entitled "Whitten and Allies Families"? > (I believe this is the name of the book.) Are you related to Dennis WHITTEN & Mary Ann (ELAM)? They went to the old one room Browning school with my sister Patricia Rose HIMES in the early 1950s. The WHITTEN and most of the early surnames in the Fayette, Bond and Montgomery Co, IL area were related to my grandmother Morna Eveline (BESS) HIMES. Beverly (HIMES)
Any idea how to get copies of a book entitled "Whitten and Allies Families"? (I believe this is the name of the book.) I was in Fillmore today and was told about this book. Thank you. I got two accurate responses from the Listers and I truly appreciate their help, MrsPlus and Beryl. I will communicate privately with them. Good luck to all the others looking for help and thanks again Dora ---------------- > also I find a Tilman Miller
I find a Mary E. Kinder age 56 listed as head of house in S. Litchfield, IL. farmer paying $16. mo. rent. has two step sons living with her Cameron 21 and Harold F. 17 both Kinder. Says she was born Michigan , Her father was Canadian English and her mother from Pennsylvania. She was married @ 25, widowed and/or divorced. They live on a farm. also I find a Tilman Miller in the 1930 census living @ Shaws Point, Macoupin Co. b. Ind. age 81, father in law to George Jarman. His daughter Jessie had been married to a Brown along with two children Ruth Brown 16 and Dorothy Brown 17. For what it's worth, I don't know if any of this helps.
I think I missed the original query but there is a Tilman Miller who married Mary E. Kinder buried in Crabtree Cem. Montgomery Co. He died 29 March 1932 in Shaws Point, Macoupin Co. Willing to share any info I have. Beryl S. Poteat Berylsp1@cs.com
Hello Christine, Did you hear back from your friend. I am afraid it is hopeless. The family of Tillman Miller lived in Harvel and so did Laura Weller Kinser who married William Kinser and moved away to Litchfield, so it seems they are lost. Were first cousins allowed to marry in the 1870's in Bond or Montgomery counties? If so, was it common practice? Thanks, Ann
YOU BET, and IT sure was. Dewey. 70 year old men also married 13 year old girls. It was the money.
Dear List, I have rescued an old cabinet card photo of an infant named Lynn Arnold Wiley. It is identified on the back side of the card and also states he is 8 months of age. This photo was taken by Tennyson (Studio) in Litchfield, IL. I would guess the photo was taken someplace around 1900. It was purchased in central TX. The old photos are mostly unidentified. When I find one that does have ID on it, I try to return it to the family of that person. Just the history person in me I guess. So, if you are a family member, or interested in this photo, please contact me privately. Thank you, Judy in TX
Donna, I have the book "Semi-Centenarians of Butler Grove Township" written in 1878 by Rev. T. E. Spillman. There are short biographies of Charles Harper, M. D. and Harriet K. Harper. Also included is Alexander Gray. They do not have information on death or burial that you are looking for because the biographies were done from personal interviews. I will be glad to share these with you if you will email me privately. A map of Butler Grove Township lists the following cemteries: Cherry Grove, Ware's Grove, Montgomery Church Cemetery, Blooming Grove aka Butler Cemetery aka Wiley Cemetery.
