    3. Hi Helen, Too much for me to type the whole thing, let me try to extract just the family connection from the article on Hon Stephen D. Canaday-- This is not verbatim! Senator Canaday was born in North Litchfield Township, four miles east of Litchfield, March 3, 1865, son of Caleb W. and Martha L. H.. (Starr) Canaday. The father was born in Kentucky, Jan 5, 1833, and brought to Montgomery County at age 2, by his parents John and Pina M. (Sapp) Canaday, both born and raised in Casey Co., Ky. Parents came to Montgomery Co in 1835 and spent rest of their lives there. The grandfather of John Canaday had been a Revolutionary War soldier. They had the following children: James, Caleb, William, Sarah, Rachel, Mary, Elzie, and Euel, the last two being twins. Caleb developed his own farm, where he died Oct 25, 1901, age 68. IN early manhood, he married Martha L.H. Starr, born Montgomery County March 27, 1842, who survives at age 75. Her parents were David Badgley and James (Street) Starr. David was born Monroe Co., Ill., and served in the Black Hawk War, and was later a farmer. He died at age 77. The maternal grandmother of Senator Canaday was born near Litchfield and died at 48. They had children: Abraham (served in Mexican War); Julia, Mary, David Monroe; James N.; John M.; Martha L.H.; and four who died in infancy. The children of Caleb and his wife were: James M., died Oct 25, 1990; Stephen D.; John Sidney; E. Franklin; Julia Alice, wife of D. D. Garver of Republican City, NE.; William L.; Lewis W., of Nebraska; Robert N., a physician; Oatie, died in infancy; Harriet C., and Mattie, wife of John B. Nail of Mayfield, KS. (Senator Canaday once served as acting governor for 13 days) Senator Canaday on Jul 27, 1890, married Miss Mattie I. Wilson, born North Litchfield Township Dec 6, 1869, daughter of John Goshen and Jane (McIntyre) Wilson. John Wilson was born in North Carolina; Jane Wilson was born in Jersey Co., Ill. The father has been married three times. Thirteen children were born of his first married: Silas Riley; George Luther; Ellen E., who married Arthur Brue; William Douglas; Virginia Ann, wife of Thomas H. Dyer; Emma and Eddie, twins died in infancy; Charles Henry, died in infancy; Alice May, wife of John C. white; James Commodore; Martha Irene, wife of Senator Canaday; Cora Blanche, died at about 2 years; John Gillespie, now deceased; and one to his third marriage, Mrs. Mabel (Wilson) Pond, wife of Arthur Pond of Kansas city. this wife is still living. Mrs. Canaday's maternal great grandfather, whose name was McIntyre, came from Ireland, and her maternal grandmother was born and reared in West Virginia. Sen and Mrs. Canaday have four children: Amos, Wayne, Warren, and Raymond, the first two died infancy. ------------------------------------ And you didn't know Canadays in Montgomery county! 3. Nora, Nothing in the alphabetical listings. In the history portion, under early settlers of Hillsboro Township (pages 884-885), after talking about Clear Springs Church being second church in the county (after one at Hurricane, near present Van Burensburg): "While Clear Springs settlement was the first settlement in the county, it was only a few months after then that Joel Smith and David Kirkpatrick settled about where Hamilton was laid out was laid out." (Hamilton was "about two and a half miles further southwest" -- page 863) And then the next paragraph "Among the early settlers, other than those above mentioned, especially those particularly connected with the early history of the town of Hillsboro, were Robert Mann, brick kiln owner; John Marshall, same business; Mark Rutlege, tavern keeper; C. B. Blockburger, tavern keeper and tin shop keeper; ..." I don't have much on him since my main interest is in his wife, who was the youngest sister of my gg-grandfather. I do have that he was b Casey CO KY on January 5, 1833 to John Canaday and Pina Sapp. They removed to Montgomery CO IL in 1835. I seem to remember that Pina Sapp is buried in Clear Springs Cemetery near Hillsboro in Montgomery CO---I think I saw her name on a stone there---you can find out by emailing Carol Berry <[email protected]> as she maintains the records for this old pioneer cemetery. However, I expect to be at the library here on Friday and I think I know where I can find something. Where are you? If you are in Montgomery CO the library at Litchfield probably has information on him, probably anything I can get here at the Newberry. Also, look on GenForum under CANADAY---there's material there about this line. What I do know (mostly from family story) is that the son of Caleb and Mattie, Stephen Canaday, was an Illinois State Representative and for a while Acting Governor. Apparently Mattie never let anybody forget her son's success and the bad blood in the family over this was still palpable during my childhood in the 1940's! Nora Tocus, Chicago

    3. Hi Nora: Thank you so much for your prompt response to my inquiry concerning C. W. Canaday. In searching through my records, I was unable to find anything on C, W, Canaday or Pina Sapp. This must be another Canaday line. I have been unable to find out where my grandparents, C. A. Sammons and Matilda Alice Canaday met. Since he was from Montgomery Co., I thought perhaps this Canaday line may be a link. They were married in Pittsburg, KS in Jan 1889. My great grandparents, James Henry and Nancy Sammons are buried in Honey Bend/Roberts Clemetery , Litchfield. Do you know where I might find these cemetery records? I really appreciate the information you sent to me and I will keep it in my files where it may come in handy in further research. We live in Sacramento, CA. I certainly would love to see and research the Hilsboro, Litchfield area where my ancestors lived so many years ago. Thanks again for your time and help. I do appreciate it. 1. [ILMONTGO] Clark, Steel, Holliday
    2. Glenn, Knowing the Steels moved from Montgomery Co.to DeKalb CO, Missouri is helpful. I am in the process of transferring my files from one computer to another and will post the Holliday line on the list sometime in the future. John James Holliday, the first husband of Alcy Clark, is believed to have died Dec. 1849. So Elcia Clark Holliday would have remarried Daniel Steel about eight months later As I recall there were three? daughters from the first marriage. If you have their married names or any info on them I will post it to the Holliday list. By the way,a John Clark, unknown relationship if any, bought a Four Horse Wagon, a brindle cow, a specked cow and a red sided white backed cow at the estate sale of Elliott Holliday Jr. (John James Hollidays brother) on Nov 16, 1854 ~Paula~ In a message dated 06/05/2000 11:08:41 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: > Subj: Re: [ILMONTGO] ROLL CALL > Date: 06/05/2000 11:08:41 PM Eastern Daylight Time > From: [email protected] (Glenn W. I visited both graves last month. Tell me this---do you have anything in your bag of tricks on Benjamin Blockburger? He was a Hillsboro boy who went West about 1860 and did well there. He was the boyhood pal and war buddy of David Badgley Starr's half-brother Wiley B Smith. Wiley kept a diary of his service in the Mexican War and now a historical society wants to publish the diary and has asked me for information about Wiley. All I know of him post-war is that he was residing with Ben in California as of 1907 when he made a visit to Hillsboro---Grandpa Starr wrote about this in a ledger. Wiley's father was Joel Smith, a pioneer ca 1820 and charter member of the Hurricane Church---there's probably nothing about him---at least I sure can't find much.. But there might be something on Blockburger. Thanks so much. Nora Tocus <[email protected]>
