Greetings, Montgomery County researchers. During a visit home to St. Louis next week, I plan to spend a day researching a link between my ancestors (Frederick HORNBURG, husband of Elizabeth KASSEL) and Montgomery County. One of the connections is that the family lived in Butler Township during the 1870 federal census. Secondly, although the family moved to St. Louis, MO, Frederick was buried in Butler, IL in 1887, his daughter Anna HORNBURG METTY was buried in Hillsboro, IL in 1910, and his wife, Elizabeth KASSEL HORNBURG was buried in Bethania Cemetery in 1904 (the only cemetery I've found with this name is in Cook County, IL). I haven't found where in Butler and Hillsboro the father and daughter are buried. I'm seeking your advice on what my plan should be: My visit is simply to find more connections to Montgomery County and to Illinois in general for this and another set of ancestors (FOGARTY-FITZGERALD) who may have lived in Illinois for a time. Should I plan to visit both Montgomery County libraries as well as the State Archives in Springfield? I understand Hillsboro has a public library with some genealogical information. Are there other worthwhile places to visit? Is it fairly easy to negotiate your way around the State Archives if you haven't been there before? Any advice is most appreciated! Eileen in SD
Dear Barb, I have mislaid my information somewhere but forwarded your e-mail on to my sisters in Wisconsin and asked them to e-mail you the information. Just in case they don't just call the home of Mary Mullins in Butler, Illinois. Mary is 90 some years old and has some difficulties with her voice. Her daughter lives with her. Her daughter's name is Marilyn Hooper. Their phone numbers is 217-532-5130. Tell them I gave you their phone number. By the way, what were your ancestors names who lived in Butler? I have a first cousin who lives in Raymond. She is June McBroom Helfley. Do you know her? Hope to hear more from you. I live in Silver Spring, Maryland. Regards Dorothy Lay

Hello, My maiden name was Dorothy Osborn. I grew up in Butler, Illinois and graduated from Hillsboro High School. There is going to be a reunion at the Ware's Grove Church on October 8 and many people from out of town will be attending. In preparation for this event my sisters and I are preparing a booklet compiled of letters written by our great grandmother Lestina Brigham Ware. The letters cover a time period from 1849 to 1860. Lestina lived in the Ware's Grove area of Montgomery County. She came to the area as a new bride and died there on February 21,1872 a week after giving birth to twins. The twins didn't live a year. Her husband David Smith Ware was left with a farm and 6 living children. In these letters Lestina mentions a Dr. White of Butler as tending to their medical needs. We have been unable to find out anything about this man. Has anyone ever heard of him or does anyone have any ideas of where I might find out who Dr. White was? We are trying to explain who everyone in the letters is and tell something about them. Any help greatly appreciated. You can reach me at [email protected]
I have never tried Montgomery County, but a book I have indicates for land records contact County Clerk, Montgomery County Courthouse, Hillsboro, IL. 62049; (217) 532-9530 - Jim Chandler

You could borrow the 1865 Illinois census microfilm through your local library. -----Original Message----- From: Kathy Andersen <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Saturday, September 02, 2000 8:48 PM Subject: [ILMONTGO] Montgomery County Resources Can anyone give me suggestions on where to look for ancestors between the 1860 and 1870 census in Montgomery Co? The Illinois State Archives checked probate, military, chancery and marriage records. The only record was marriage register with names and date of marriage. Are there records that would index a person who might not own real property and might be living with another family? The 1860 census is too early and the 1870 is too late. This ancestor appears out of nowhere and disappears the same way. Actually, just in time to be a father, then gone. I'm a little suspicious about that. Can someone give me some guidance?? Thanks! Don't know when they were put there but there are new stones for Charles and Anna Row at Crabtree Cemetery. Saw them and took pictures of them for Janet. Double exposed. Going to have to go back and do it over. We didn't look stone by stone but they were the only Row's (Rowe) we saw. Brad Collins
The obit in the Litchfield paper on Charles Row said that he died in his home in Gillespie. He retired from the railroad in Feb 1942. He had resided in Gillespie for 12 yrs. He married Ida O. Simmons (sp) in 1895. She died a number of years ago and on Feb 7, 1906 he married Anna B. Cranfill of Hillsboro who survives. He leaves 4 children, Mrs. Creole Fleischman, Rolla MO, Mrs Capitola King of Edwardsville, IL, Mrs Ethel Sandahl of Benld, IL, and Charles of Troy, IL. The 3 children born of the first marriage, David, Mrs Annie Lichene and Mrs Mabel Fletcher, and one of the second, Wilfred, preceded him in death. I did not find any Rowe's in Crabtree cemetery but I have not been through it in several years. The stones that are there for Charles and Anna have been put in place since 1992. francis ----- Original Message ----- From: shapiro <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, August 26, 2000 6:13 PM Subject: [ILMONTGO] Rowe > Seeking info on the following family, > Charles William Rowe born 1872 in MO > wife Ida May Simpson born 1878 in IL > children: > Eliza Ann Rowe born 1897 in Litchfield > Mabel V. Juli You should go to the web site for the Illinois Geneagological Society (in Springfield). You can get to the web site from the IL page at http:/www.usgenweb.com. Click on "newspapers". They have several rolls for Montgomery County and they are available for interlibrary loan. Cory, OKC
Good question, Bob. My experience with that 1870 census is that many pages are so black [on the microfilm] that page after page is entirely unreadable. Often entire towns' census entries are impossible to read. Lea Bob Drennan wrote: > > Also, is the 1870 census transcribed. It appears as though my relatives > might be on portions that are faded. Also, is the 1870 census transcribed. It appears as though my relatives might be on portions that are faded. I am hopeful that someone had a good copy and copied it. Is the 1870 census indexed for Montgomery County? Is there a HOH index for 1880, or just the soundex? Thanks, Nancy __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - Free email you can access from anywhere! http://mail.yahoo.com/
Does anyone have a George W. McAllister or a Frank W. Lamb in their line? George married a Catharine R. Classon in 1874, and Frank married a Carrie E. Clossen in 1869, both in Montgomery Co. I'm working on Claussen's in the county, and would like to touch base with you if these names are familiar. Thanks, Juli Claussen
Dear Bob, Well, I'm not sure if this is the Henry Young I'm looking for or not. All I know about him so far, is that he appears as below in the 1860 census for Montgomery Co., IL: #1428-1454 Young, James D., age 50, male, b. VA " ", Susan, age 36, female, b. Denmark* " ", John, age 17, male, b. KY " ", Ellen, age 13, female, b. KY " ", Henry, age 1, male, b. IL Clawson, Julia, age 31, female, Denmark (unmarried sister of Susan) * I know this to be Thekla "Susan" Claussen, who married James Young in Montgomomery Co.,Apr. 25, 1857. I am asking about a cemetery listing for Henry in an attempt to begin learning something about his life, and hopefully connect up with some of his descendants to share info. Do you think this could be the Henry Barton Young you mentioned? Juli Claussen Carbondale, IL "Are you looking for Henry Barton Young? B. abt 1856 in Illinois? Married Angeline Caulk in 1878?"
