    3. I checked Arrowheads to Aerojets, the chapter on Schools, p. 371, and found no Sand Bank school. There is a Sand Bank Road in Columbia, so I wonder if it was located in that precinct? ----- Original Message ----- From: <lworth1@charter.net> To: <ILMONROE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 30, 2004 10:59 AM Subject: [IL-Monroe] Sand Bank School > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Hh.2ADE/240 > > Message Board Post: > > Can anyone tell me where the Sand Bank School was located in Monroe County. > sharon > > > ==== ILMONROE Mailing List ==== > Daab's Drug Store, in Columbia, in 1918, sold: Drugs, Stationary, School Supplies, Kodaks, Supplies and Developing, Avalon Farms "Hog Tone", Wolf's Poultry and Stock remedies....And they also give "Prompt attention to Parcel Post Orders" > > Will our descendants think some of the things we buy at Walgreens and Eckerd's are that crazy?? > >

    3. Just uploaded three great photos to the School section of the Monroe County site. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmonroe/ A 1899 Photo of the Miles School and students was submitted by Kay Connelly. Today while visiting a cousin in Columbia she dug out a 1918 Waterloo Graduating Class photo Beautiful picture but not a single name. If anyone can help name these students I would appreciate the help. Also my cousin found a post card in her box of goodies she was sharing, it was a picture of a class of students in front of the Sand Bank School, older than the one we have on the site, great picture but again not a name on it. If anyone can help name these please contact me. sharon

    1. Re: [IL-Monroe] Hilton Hotel

    3. How sad, especially if it was still a good solid structure. I also saw a problem like this is MA. One of the twists to the story though, is that the building in question belonged to the hospital complex in the city. It has outlived it's usefulness and also was costing more in upkeep than the building was worth. The historical society wouldn't let them tear it down, so they offered to give it to the Historical Society, who didn't want it, but again wouldn't let it be torn down. I believe it is abandoned right now because no one will take care of it or restore it, and it became too dilapidated/dangerous to use, due to it's age. I can see if your historical building was still in good shape, but the case in MA is really sad for everyone involved. It is now a neighborhood eyesore, and no one can do anything about it. 1. Hilton Hotel
    2. Janet Flynn
    3. Jerry: I just got back from Branson a couple of days ago and was inundated with phone calls and e-mails about the destruction of this historical old building. I can't believe it! The sneakiness and backhanded way in which this was done is low, even for politicians!! These short-sighted political hacks will be gone in a few years, but the destruction they leave is forever. It is particularly sad to me, as my 3rd gr-grandfather, Joseph W. HILTON, built the hotel in the 1840's. I have done much research and believe it was the first Hilton Hotel in the country. Since the majority of Waterloo's ancestry came to IL way after the Revolution and Indian wars were fought and won, many seem to have no respect for the Colonial Americans who made the land on which they settled safe for them and their families. If Monticello or Mt. Vernon were in Waterloo, I'm sure they would have been torn down long ago. More concrete on the land is so necessary! I personally, and as an officer of the Monroe County Historical Society, am disgusted with this brazen destruction of early county history, as are many members of the Society. St. Clair County residents suffered a like experience when their beautiful old Grecian-style courthouse was covertly razed and the ugly concrete bunker was erected. What a shame! Janet

    1. LONG/LANG; 1830s-1850s
    2. Kortenkamp, Daniel
    3. In the "Conveyance Records, 1816-1900, Monroe Co., IL, (County Clerk), Book I" there are several LONG(E)/LANG(E) persons buying and selling land during the 1830s-1850s. Their first names are Henry, Moritz, Michael, Nicholas, John & James. Does anyone have information about these persons or other LANGs/LONGs in Monroe County during this time? I am trying to trace my Henry & Catherine [SCHEURICH] LANG between when they emigrated from Bavaria in 1836 to when they settled in Dubuque County, Iowa, in 1847. Various censuses after 1847 list several of their children as born in Illinois; and a family story says that one child was born near St. Louis, Missouri. I have much info about their ancestry in Bavaria and their life in Dubuque County; but their location between 1836 and 1847 is a blank. If you want to read more about this LANG family see the "Lang Family History" at my website (in my signature). Daniel Daniel J.
