    3. Ladies & Gentlemen: Is there anything the State of Illinois can do to prevent local businesses and politicians from destroying historical buildings? Several weeks ago, an old and historically marked building was destroyed in an extremely sneaky and underhanded way in Waterloo. The building was built in the 1840's by Joseph W. Hilton for his hotel and livery business. The City of Waterloo purchased the building and lot late one evening/night and between midnight and 5:00 A.M. totally destroyed the building to make a parking lot. A $110,000 parking lot. Absolutely no one in the community received any alert about their intentions. The entire transaction from purchase to destruction occurred in approximately 12 hours. I have done much research and believe this was the first Hilton Hotel in the entire country. The 3rd floor had Masonic and another lodge symbol (IOOF?) engraved in the ceiling and a little room where the candidate apparently waited to see if he were accepted or "black balled". Now another old building is in danger. It is the old Waterloo newspaper building on Market Street a half block from the courthouse in the "historic district". Sources tell me that First Bank has purchased the building and wants to tear it down for a new building. It was built circa late 1800's and is a beautiful old building. The Harrisonville Telephone Co. was allowed to destroy almost an entire block of historic buildings, including the Dutch College, for a new office building and parking lot. All this is done right on Market Street in the so-called "Waterloo Historic District". The Monroe County Historical Society's protests are ignored, therefore I ask if there is anything you can do to help us. I am going out of town tomorrow, but can be reached by my cell phone - 417-230-5373. Thank you for your attention to this matter, Janet M. Flynn, Secretary Monroe County Historical Society Secretary & co-founder Monroe County Genealogical Society

    1. Jarrot Mansion Autumn Open House
    2. Jarrot Mansion Autumn Open House...Saturday, September 18, at Jarrot Mansion, Cahokia IL, Noon to 5 pm. The public has a rare opportunity to see the interior of the Jarrot Mansion, which has recently experienced an initial phase of renovation. Visitors will be pleased to see the meticulous restoration inside Illinois' oldest brick building. Among other events, there will be a presentation at 1:00 p.m. by Charles LaRobardier and George Pensoneau, who jointly compiled the newly available translation of all the extant records of Holy Family Church, from 1784, through 1930. This is an excellent record, over 38,000 entries, of St. Clair's earliest French settlers. There will be one copy on display for onsite research. The Jarrot Mansion Historic Site is located at 124 E. First Street, near Holy Family Church and adjacent to the intersection of Hwy 157 and Route 3. For further information, call Site Manager at 618-332-1782. 1. Tamarawa "town diaries"
    2. Kortenkamp, Daniel
    3. I was looking at LDS film # 1317835 "Conveyance Records 1816-1900, Monroe County" a few weeks ago for the land records of my "possible" ancestors. Their 1846 town of Tamarawa land record included the phrase "land described by town diaries". Does anyone have info about these "town diaries"? Tamarawa was near Hecker, Monroe County. According to the land records, Tamarawa was partly in Monroe County, and partly in St. Clair County. Dan Daniel J. 1. beginning date for St. Augustine records, Hecker (and Tamarawa?)
    2. Kortenkamp, Daniel
    3. I have been told there are microfilms of the St. Augustine Catholic Church records, Hecker, Monroe County. Can someone tell me the date these records begin? I would like to find records for a family that may have lived in Tamarawa (near Hecker) during the late 1830s and early 1840s. I think Tamarawa was partly in Monroe County and partly in St. Clair County. Dan Daniel J. Kortenkamp Stevens Point, WI 54481 http://www.uwsp.edu/psych/dk/danielpg.htm

    1. Re: [ILSTCLAI] Hecker GAR list?
    2. Janet Flynn
    3. This is the only Monroe Co. GAR post I find in Arrowheads to Aerojets: JACOB C. GAUEN POST, NO. 563, GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC The Jacob C. Gauen Post, No. 563, Grand Army of the Republic, was chartered March 1, 1886. There is no record of charter officers. Peter P. Rau was the last surviving member of the local GAR before he died August 7, 1933. The members took part in all parades in the county. The charter members were: Edwin Nixon, Louis Arns, Oscar O'Neil, Adam Wildt, Anton Meyer, Conrad Herman, Joseph Keilback, Stephen Schaefer, Henry Meyer, Louis Tiechgraeber, George Schaefer, Mathias Schmeids, Louis Simplemann, Dan Schultheis, Christian Boedecker, Philip Heusohn, William Schlingmann, Christian Dobrman, William Hillyard, John Martin, William Rogers, Daniel Zimmer, Joseph Maudinger, and Jacob Satter. The book doesn't mention a separate chapter in Hecker, but the authors of this book seemed to focus mainly on the Waterloo area. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cheryl" <cjordan3@cinci.rr.com> To: <ILSTCLAI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 07, 2004 6:31 PM Subject: Re: [ILSTCLAI] Hecker GAR list? > Please reply to the list as I am interested in this information also. > Thanks, > Cheryl > Clinton county, Ohio > > Subject: [ILSTCLAI] Hecker GAR list? > > > Hi all, > I am looking for information about the Hecker GAR (Grand Army of the > Republic, Civil War Veterans group). If you are among these, please send an email to the list identifying yourself as a Hecker researcher. We might work together to compile a comprehensive literature for our libraries on the history of Freedom/Hecker; to my knowledge, such a history has not been printed--I would love to be informed otherwise. Thanks. Marsha Clark
