    1. [ILMONROE-L] Peter Schmitt (Schmidt)
    2. Can anyone give me the names and addresses of Catholic churches in Waterloo, particularly any that have been around since the 1860's? Thanks to Janet at MCGS, I now know that Peter Schmitt (Schmidt) married Elizabeth Rapp on February 13, 1862 in Waterloo. I called the Monroe County Clerk's Office but was told that marriage records back then did not list birth dates or any family information. I know they were married in a Catholic church and I thought may be church records might contain some additional information, like their parents' names, etc. I also believe their son (my grandfather) Jacob Schmitt would have been baptized there in 1872. I would assume if they had any other children, they would also have been baptized there. Thanks for any help. My e-mail is [email protected] Jean Schmitt

    2. Thanks, Janet. I've often wondered why he wasn't buried with his first wife, but I guess his second wife had other thoughts. She (Mary Melvina Patterson McDonald) is buried in Ste. Genevieve Co, MO with her third husband, Washington Duvall. Linda

    2. Linda: The Lemen monument stands in the middle of a field behind Nobbe Equipment off Rt. 3, visible from the road, especially when the trees are bare. This was part of the original Lemen claim, now owned by others. I checked my cemetery index for others buried there, but there was no AGNEW listed. However, the index states that there are at least 16 old stones, fully to partially visible, but only 12 were legible 30 years ago when this cemetery was indexed. There are mostly LEMENs, TOLINs, EASTWOODs and 1 McMURTRAY. James LEMEN Sr. and his wife, Catharine OGLE LEMEN are buried here. The other possiblity is New Design, although this was mostly built on the TOLIN claim, it probably "overlapped", although I'd have to check the map to be sure. I checked that index and found only one AGNEW - Rutha C. Agnew, wife of James N. Agnew, born July 3, 1863, died Jan. 20, 1882. I also checked the Burksville cemetery index although that's probably too far away to be part of the old Lemen claim, and found no AGNEW there either. As you know, this doesn't mean that he's not in one of these cemeteries. Many old graves were not marked at all, or just had big stones laid on them, which are long gone. I can't think of another cemetery that would be on the old LEMEN land grant. I've copied Pat in case she can think of one I'm missing. Janet

    2. In a message dated 99-02-03 09:08:29 EST, you write: << I am a LEMEN descendant and a descendant of Abraham CLARK of the Hardy Co. party. I am suspicious that my TOLIN ancestors may also have originated from Hardy Co., but have not yet been able to prove this. I know they were from VA, as were all of our first Americans. Our VP is an IMAN/EYMAN descendant. There are many descendants of these Hardy Co. families. Most of the early SHOOKs are in Eagle Cliff-Miles cemetery as they eventually settled in the American Bottom. >> Janet, My ancestor, William Allen Agnew died in 1866 and is reported to be buried on the Lemen Farm southwest of Waterloo. HIs wife, Margaret T. McCann, who died in 1854, is buried in the Wilson-Divers Cemetery. Know anything about a burial area or site on the Lemen farm? Linda

    2. Gerry: The church in Burksville is Protestant. It is closed up. A copy of its church books (very poor quality and in German) are in the library at Waterloo. My Dad and his siblings grew up in Burksville and they went to St. Patrick's in Tipton, then to SS. Peter & Paul in Waterloo. I was just looking at the cemetery index for Madonnaville and found some Wierschems. Do you know about them? If not, let me know and I'll copy. >From what my Dad has said in the past Bushy Prairie was a tavern and maybe a turn in the road. I'm copying this to our VP, she knows all the little towns in Monroe Co. Pat, can you help Gerry with Bushy Prairie?

    3. Some of our Wierschem, Meier, and Shields are buried in Madannaville, also. I have seen a book of copies of the Madonnaville Church records at the Library in Waterloo, but these are mostly undecipherable. Is there any cental place where one could view these records? Thanks, gerry meier

    3. My father in law's family, descending from Ernst Meier and Mary Hagene, were from New Design. The earliest I can place them there is about 1846. Does anyone know if there are books or records from New Design? What about the Catholic Church in Burksville.. would that have been the one that people from New Design belonged to? That church is closed, or being used for other purposes. I wonder if there's any more info about the town out there? If you know please let me know. Here's another odd town of our Shields family that I cant seem to find much info, on...Bushy Prairie. I drove there looking for it, and there wasn't anything in the area. Where did it go? Thanks, Gerry Meier
