    1. [ILMONROE-L] Old German Cemetery in Monroe Co.
    2. Dennis Spencer
    3. I am researching the family of Lafayette Warnock, b. 12 March 1824 in IL and d. 10 April 1898, possibly in Columbia, Monroe, IL. His wife was Lucinda Moore, b. 12 March 1826 in Waterloo, IL and probably died in Columbia, IL. We have been told that their son, Samuel Fletcher (Fletch) Warnock, who was born in Columbia, IL 14 June 1858, had a wife and two daughters who all died of small pox within a few months of each other. It was also said that they were buried in Monroe Co, possibly Columbia, in the "old German cemetery". Does anyone know the name of that cemetery and if there is a way to access the names of the persons buried there? I am also researching the family of Madison G. Nixon, M.D., b. 15 July 1843 in OH and died 12 Jan. 1917 in Columbia, IL. He was married to Emma Albertine Warnock, b. 26 Jan 1856 in Columbia, IL. She was the daughter of LaFayette Warnock. I would like to know where they are buried and to have more information on their children who I show as Emma, Wilbur and Minnie Nixon. I will be glad to share information. Thanks, Janie Spencer

    3. The C&A Railroad A little town in southern Illinois had a sensational birth rate, and scientists decided to visit the place and find out the cause. So the sociologists, anthropologists, birth control specialists and other concerned scientists moved to the town prepared to do a six-month study of the causes of the town's high birth rate. The day the research testing and all was to begin, the director of the million-dollar project stopped off at the single cafe in town and ordered coffee. When the waiter delivered his drink, the scientist detained him for a moment and asked, "Can you give me an idea was to why your town, above all others in this country, has such a high birth rate?" The waiter thought a moment, then said, "I think I can. You see, every morning at 4:00, the C&A Railroad comes through town and blows its whistle at all three street crossings. That wakes up the folks here and, as you can guess, it's too darn late to go back to sleep and too darn early to get up." --- John Crossley Sacramento, California, USA [email protected] http://www.jps.net/crossley Ask me about my Joke-a-Day email list!

    1. [ILMONROE-L] Tour and research day at St. Louis Public Library
    2. On Saturday, July 17, 1999, at 9:30 A.M. MCGS members are invited to attend a tour of the St. Louis Public Library. Cynthia Millar will conduct our tour. Cynthia is a member of the St. Louis Genealogical Society, former SLGS Board member and very knowledgeable of the Library's large genealogical holdings. We will visit the Library's Genealogical and Microfilm collections in the morning and then stay to conduct our personal research the rest of the day. MCGS members must arrange their own transportation. Many of us living on the Illinois side will park at the Casino Queen and take MetroLink over to the Kiel stop, then walk to the Library.. Let's meet on the second floor at the Genealogical Department at 9:30 A.M. If you have any questions, please contact me. Janet Flynn, MCGS

    3. Because of early changes in county delineations, I am confused about where to seek very early records, not that doing so would be simple even if I were certain where they are held, if there are any, which I doubt. So you see my problem. Does anyone know where there MIGHT be a record of a marriage made some time between 1797 and 1801? My clues are: 1) that the two names are Elizabeth BADGLEY and John STARR; 2) that the couple is said to have lived "in the Bottom near Eagle Cliff;" and 3) that that a family document states that Elizabeth was married by her father (Reverend David BADGLEY, a very early Baptist minister) in his home (in 1804 he bought land about three miles north of present-day Waterloo). No definite information is on the CD-ROM of Illinois marriages. Would old Baptist records be somewhere? Glad of any suggestions. Thanks, Nora Tocus

    3. Hi, Bavaria can be a confusing term. One of my Monroe County families that arrived about 1860 - Daniel and Catherine (Jaeger) Krauss and children - are listed as coming from Bavaria. They are from towns near Becherbach, which is currently part of the province of Rheinland-Pfalz in Germany (nowhere near today's Bavaria). It turns out that in the mid-19th century, the Kingdom of Bavaria extended that far north! In my own database I have some information on local Langs (but not Heinrich) that lived in St. Clair County, but moved to Monroe County: Adam Philipp Lang m. Elisabeth Seib. They had at least 2 daughters: Elisabeth Lang (b. 1865 in Millstadt, St. Clair Co - d.20 Dec 1897 near Columbia, Monroe Co.), first wife of Wilhelm Lepp, Jr. (m. ca. 1888) Caroline (Pauline) Lang (b. 1860/1861 in Millstadt - d. 1899 Columbia, Monroe Co) the second wife of Wilhelm Lepp, Jr. (married 11 Oct 1898 in Columbia, Monroe County) Johan Philipp Lang m. Rosina ?, at least one daughter Maria Lang (b. 1839 Millstadt, St. Clair Co - d.1915 Columbia, Monroe Co) m. Georg Eckert on 20 May 1860 in St. Clair County. Good luck in your research, Peggy Kolm [email protected]
