I believe I was the one who responded to an inquiry on the EBEL name in Monroe County, IL. I recognized it as the name of the name of the person my ancestor married in the 1880's. Amalia/Emilie Kempf married Philip Ebel. Philip may have been a son or grandson of your Ebel. Janet McLain Jllynjam@aol.com

Hi Listers, In the MCGS Quarterly Volume 7, Number 4, Oct 2003, someone placed a query seeking info on Anna Marie EBEL b. Dec 11, 1804 Bheinbayern, GER. There was no name or contact info for the submitter, so if you're on this mail list would you please contact me? I would also like to exchange info with anyone else researching the EBEL/ABEL family of Monroe County. Thanks, Jan Heiskell
I want to thank everyone who responded to my inquiry regarding the Kissel family. I'm excited to say I have identified my family photo's. I have been in contact with a descendant of the Kissel family who has identified the individuals, plus has given me a lot more on my Kissel / Theobald connection. A special thank you to "Rich". This would still be my "brick wall" without help from the list. Beth Steinmann

Arrowheads to Aerojets has many mentions of VARNUMs. This is a history of Monroe Co. It may be available via interlibrary loan or a CD of the book can be purchased from MCGS for $35 + s&h. A to A, pg. 278: The first murder case to be tried in Monroe County (History of Randolph, Monroe and Perry, page 147) was for the death of a boy or young man, Jacob Gilman, who died on December 22, 1827, under suspicious circumstances. The coroner's jury held Jewett Varnum. Varnum was committed to jail on January 31 at Belleville, Illinois. Monroe County had no jail, only a lock and some irons which were in the possession of a citizen of Harrisonville. Varnum petitioned Judge T. W. Smith for a writ of habeas corpus, under which he was brought to Edwardsville before His Honor, February 5, 1828. The judge admitted him to bail in the amount of $500.00 with Thomas Hamilton as security. The case was brought before the grand jury, who on March 8, 1828, indicted Varnum for murder. The case was tried again on August 13, 1828, and Varnum was acquitted. At the next term of court in August 1828, Justus Varnum was indicted for challenging Isaac Clark to fight a duel with rifles, to wit, on July 13, 1828. Bad blood, caused by a lawsuit about the right of some property, had prevailed for some time between the parties. The duel was not fought, and the case against Varnum was nol. pros. in August 1829. ----- Original Message ----- From: <jrbrown@pacifier.com> To: <ILMONROE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 04, 2004 9:54 AM Subject: [IL-Monroe] Moses Varnum 1760-1833, Wife Sarah > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: VARNUM > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Hh.2ADE/215 > > Message Board Post: > > I've just discovered that my GGGGreat-Grandparents, Moses and Sarah DEAN VARNUM lived (and probably died) in Monroe Co.
