David Actually, Margaret O'mara married John H. Denning in Rock Island County on March 1, 1860: Volume A - Page 167 - License 3527. In 1870 (Census) John is 41 years old and Margaret is 30. Their children, so far, are: Evaline - age 9 and Bell - age 4. They are farming in Duncan Township. Your Patrick O'mara, who was born in Prussia (see history lesson below) according to the census, is 24 years old and living with John and Margaret in the same household as a farm laborer. History In the first half of the 19th Century (1800's), most of Ireland depended on their potato crops for survival. In 1845-1847 a blight destroyed the potato crops and 750,000 citizens died of starvation and disease. During these years hundreds of thousands of people left Ireland, many (maybe most) coming to the United States. At this time, Prussia was at the height of it's power, controling most of Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Hungary and more. (You remember Prussia from high school history. They were the soldiers with those steel spikes on the top of their helmets!) Anyways, ships would travel from port to port until they were loaded for a trip to America. Perhaps your Patrick's mother was pregnant when they left Ireland and he was born in one of these port stops. Pure speculation! (But maybe) If so, this should help you identify the ship these folks came over on and the ship's manifest will connect some of your research. I'll get back into this later, right now I must go do something productive on this fine spring day! I'm looking for the relationship of Peter VETTER born Sept. 2, 1828 to several families in Rock Island and Mercer County. I believe Peter's mother to be a RETTIG and her sister to be the mother of William RETTIG, born April 1, 1859 in Schlierbach Hesse Darmstaedt. So far I have not located a German town to look for records for Peter, so I am hoping someone can direct me to a location or may have information about families with these RETTIG, VETTER, LENZ or KADEL ties. Hesse Darmstaedt is about all I know for his origin. He came to America with his parents according to his obituary, but I don't know who his family was other than the relationship of these three as told to me by my mother. Peter's nephew was William RETTIG (see above) Peter's nieces were Katharina RETTIG KADEL born August l2, 1844 in Schlierbach Hesse Darmstaedt and Mary Eva RETTIG LENZ, born June 17, 1852 In Schlierbach, Hesse Darmstaedt I would like further information about the parents, especially the mother, of the above people. It would be appreciated. Ruth J. Thompson

There were two William Rettigs in the Milan area about 3 years ago however they have both died rather recently. The William you do not want is in Milan Illinois. His parents are Herman & Ida. The spellings are the same and we have never been able to relate the two Rettig families. We have actually known Bill for many years before he passed away and discussed our kinship many times. I'm sure his wife is still alive in Illinois City. It seems since the William and the Rettig are common that they would be related. The Bill Rettig from Milan is my grandfather's brother. There are many Rettig's in that area let me know if I can get you other information.

Rob Henry does appear in the index of my screwed up 1870 Census CD, but is not where the index says he should be in the listing. I do not find him in Suez Township in the 1900 Census. Nor do I see this family or any other Peters family in Suez Township in the 1920 Census. He does not appear as a land owner in 1875. He could still be in Mercer County in another Township. Any other clues? We are decended of John. If there is anything I can help you with let me know. Jared Easling was born in upstate New York. His father was John J. Easling. Jared Easling married Mary J. Ross and they lived in Keithsburg, Mercer Co., IL from the early 1840's to the late 1860's. Jared Easling raised his nephew, William, who was born about 1845 in Keithsburg. (Jared also had a son named William G. who was born about 1850.) William (the nephew) is believed to have been the son of Nat (Nate, Nathaniel) Easling and an Indian woman who died in childbirth with their second baby. Jared is listed on the 1850 Census but no documentation has been found to verify "Nathaniel" as the correct name of William's father. "Nathaniel" supposedly died about 1855 but I don't know where. I have traced my Easling's back to the mid-1700's in New York and later (late 1700's) into West Stockbridge, MA, where they show up on the 1790 Census. The only other "Easling" info I have on the Mercer Co. Easlings is one of Jared's daughters died young and is buried in one of the local cemeteries and also that "my" William (the nephew) enrolled in the Civil War from Illinois. Bonnie Frasca
On Hugh Maynes death certificate 7 Mar 1858 his wife Jane and a Thomas Doonan of Mercer Co., IL were appointed to administer the estate of Hugh. A relative wrote and indicated that her ancestor John Mayne (who was 24, living with Hugh in the 1860 census of Mercer Co.) was the son of Adam and Jane (Dinah) Doonan. I'm wondering if any of you have Doonan's in your research...I wonder if a Maynes married a Doonan? Thank you for all your wonderful help!! Trudy
