    1. [ILMERCER-L] Re: Hamlet Cooper
    2. George Carpenter
    3. Good Morning Mark Here's a few things to tease you until I have more time to get into the Coopers again. (From the History of Mercer County - 1882) Page 311 In 1844, Hamlet Cooper stopped at Burrall's with his wife and seven children, a yoke of oxen and cart and cow and a calf. Out of money, he was induced to look at the prairie on the north side of Camp Creek. It being a very bad season, with the streams high, he camped on the banks of Camp lCreek, and swiming the creek, he examined the land and determined to make a claim on Section 9. Waiting two weeks for the water to fall so that he could cross the creek, he in the last of June moved up and made the first settlement on the north side of Camp Creek. Page 317 The Village of Hamlet, located one mile south of the north line and three miles west of the east line of the township, was laid out on the land of Josiah and Capt. D.M. Candor, in 1868, and was christened Hamlet, in honor of Hamlet Cooper, now deceased, one of the very first of the pioneers to locate in this section of the country. Page 329 Hamlet Cooper (deceased) was one of the pioneer settlers of Perryton township. He located here in 1844. At that time there was but little else here than wild grass and wild animals. He emigrated from England, his native country, about 1832, to New York, and then to Michigan, where he resided six years, and then came to Perryton township, where he died in 1847, at the age of 41 years. In 1829 he married Mary A. Clark, of England. They raised a family of eight children: Thomas, William H., Charlotte A., John H., Lester H., Philip, Enoch, and Robert (deceased). The last named enlisted in company A, 9th Ill. Cavalry. He was mustered into the service in 1861 and served one year, when he died at Keokuk, Iowa. William H. and Lester H. enlisted in 1862, in company C, 102nd Ill. Vol. Inf., and served til the close of the war. They were at the battle of Peach Tree Creek, with Sherman on his march to the sea. Both were with the company all the time during the their term of service. Th! ey passed through Richmond, to Washington, then to Chicago, where they were mustered out. William H. now resides in Kansas; Lester H. on the farm, three-fourths of a mile west of the village of Hamlet. Lester H. received only a moderate educational training; for the several years he folowed breaking prairie, when he took to the farm, but at present is engaged in keeping fine horses. He married in 1876 to Mary J. Nichols, native of Illinois, daughter of Ephraim H. and Diana Nichols, both of Ohio. They came to Illinois in 1854 and located in Hancock county; they afterward came to Mercer County, but returned to Hancock county, where both are living. My name is Mark Ziemer. My mothers maiden name is Joyce Cooper. We are related to Hamlet Cooper, what can you tell me about him, his wife and their children? I know I'm related thru Lester Hamlet Cooper. What were his childrens names? My grandfather was Donald Cooper, and his father was Howard Cooper. Is this the connection, or does it go back another generation? Do you have birth, death, marriage dates? Any information you can give me on the Cooper side would be appreciated.. Thanks Mark Ziemer ziemer1@msn.com

    3. You need to give us more information. For example, your great grandparents names if you have them. Otherwise, your parents names and your grandparents names. That way we can connect the line up to you. Street addresses won't help much unless you include a date they lived at that address. Jacob ( wife Christiana/ Christina) and Russell P. live a house away from each other. (Hamlet) I am trying to tie them all together. I need parent info on them. Allen seems to be the oldest living in Mercer. Some of the Wellivers married Dunn's in Mercer. Jacob and Christian's duaghter Mary catherine married W. Scott Hughes in Mercer. The Hughes went to Mo for a while and then returned to Mercer. They have Ira, Anna B., and Lenore. I am very interested in this family of Wellivers. Russell has Winfield, Henderson (killed in civil war), Margaret, Eliza A.. Russels wife was a Cool probably. (Elizabeth) There are a lot of families from the same area of PA around them in the Hamlet area, Blue, Deihl... Any help is appreciated.

    1. Re: [ILMERCER-L] Mann Cemetery
    2. Dennis Adams
    3. I visited the Mann Cemetery Friday afternoon, May 3, 2002. I called the man who owned the property when I visited two years ago and he said it was OK to visit anytime. The cemetery is located in the SOUTHWEST Quarter of Section 5, North Henderson Twp., (Twp 13N - R 1 W) Mercer Co., Illinois. To reach it head WEST out of North Henderson about three miles and turn right on 290th Ave. Proceed NORTH on 290th Ave almost to the dead end or about 3 1/4 miles. Turn right on a grassy lane and continue approximately 1/8th mile. This lane is kept mowed for this purpose. You will have to park at the end of the grassy lane and walk East approximately 1/16 of a mile along the edge of a cornfield to the gate of the cemetery. The gate is a metal farm type gate and is padlocked. Carefully climb over the gate and you are in the cemetery. When I went last Friday, I could not see any stones from the gate. Walk North and easterly and you will find the grave of Young C. Mann and his wife. From there you will see many more stones. The cemetery is rapidly returning to a WILD state. There are many full grown trees that have toppled stones and several large trees have fallen on the South side. BE CAREFUL. I took over forty pictures of the stones and markers and am in the process of posting them to Virtual Cemetery on Genealogy.com. (http://www.genealogy.com/vcem_welcome.html). Go to the Virtual Cemetery homepage and select Search for a Tombstone and in the Cemetery Name box type in Mann Cemetery, North Henderson Twp. You do cross private property to reach the cemetery so I remind everyone to take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints. Please do not trample on the young corn plants. Also, wear suitable clothing for a trek in dense woods. There are a lot of brambles and weeds. Be careful around the stones as some have become unstable and could fall on you. It would be wise to NOT GO ALONE as there is safety in numbers. If any one would like the photo file for a particular person send me an email and I will send an electronic image back if I have it. I did not photograph all stones as my original intent was to show the condition of the cemetery. I plan to return in June and photograph the rest of the stones. I will continue to post the photos I currently have on Virtual Cemetery as time allows.
