    3. Mike Henerietta Fuller married John Pearson in Kane County, Illinois on February 6, 1872. No way of knowing if this is the same Henerietta you are looking for. Quite a few Fuller ladies in Mercer County were married in the 1800's. Actually, I was married to Gary Willits for a very brief period in 1972-73. He is my oldest son's biological father, however my second husband adopted my son, (also Gary) and he has never met his bio father. Although he really hasn't shown much intrest in meeting his bio father he has mentioned to me that it would be nice to have something to pass on to his daughter regarding the Willits family in case she should ever want to know. I have been doing a lot of ancestry research on me and my husbands families and he thinks it is pretty cool, so I just thought I would find out as much as I could about the Willits family and give it too him to put in a lock box if he or my grandaughter ever would want to know. I can use any info you have. I do not have either Purn or Effie's parents name and have lost track of all of their children. Again, thank you for replying.

    3. Melanie Here's the information on the Fry(e) families I have. 1860 Census: William Fry is 33 years old, his wife Angelina is 30. Their children are Mary - age 9, William - age 6, Frank - age 4 and Harriett - age 1. William was born in England. Angelina and all the kids were born in Illinois. That tells us William came to America on or before 1850 since Mary, the eldest was born in Illinois. Samuel does not appear in the 1860 Census. 1870 Census: William Fry(e) is 51 (??) years old and Angelina is 48 (??). (Guess they aged fast in those days!) Mary is 19, William Jr. is 16, Frank is 14, Harriett is 11, Samuel is 8, Eliza is 4, Lucy and L(u)vina (twins?) are 9 months old. Samuel Frye is 51 years old and his wife, Mary J. is 46. Their children are Caroline age 17, Jonas 15, Elizabeth 13, Samuel 8, William 6 and James is 2 years old. Samuel, Mary J. and all the children except James were born in England. James was born in Illinois in 1868. From this we know that Samuel and his family came from England sometime between William's birth in England in1864 and James birth in 1868 in Illinois. Thus, Samuel does not appear in the 1860 Census. 1880 Census: William Fry is 60 years old and Ann (Angelina?) is 58. Still living with them are Mary 28, William Jr. 26, Samuel 20, Lucy and L(o)vina both age 12 and Henry age 5. Living with them in dwelling # 117 is Harriet Mead age 18 and Eliza Fry age 13. Harriet L. Fry married Chancey J. Mead on November 25, 1878. Questions: Harriet is moved back into the home of William's family. What happened to Chancey? Eliza Fry is listed after Harriet; sort of like an after thought. How come such a difference in age listings? Were they just guessing? Frequent changes in spelling of names. Census takers wrote down what they heard. Ages can vary a couple of years depending on what time of year the census was taken, but 10 years is too much for William and Angelina between 1860 and 1870. (Was Henry really born when Angelina was 53 or is he the offspring of one of the other siblings?) What happened to Samuel? I checked several townships around Rivoli, where they all were in 1870, but haven't found him yet. He's in my notes and I'll watch for him. Hope this will fill in some blanks. George Carpenter Illinois City, Illinois Incidently, I now have CDs of the Mercer County Census (and many other counties) from 1830 thru 1920. 1870 is the only one that is indexed. The others are hard to search and read. Some of the early censuses list only the head of house and the number of persons dwelling therein. The 1890 Census is not available. It was destroyed in a fire. ----- Original Message ----- From: melanie brown To: gcarp@qconline.com Sent: Tuesday, June 11, 2002 9:17 AM Subject: Frye--McLain Now I am looking for Samuel Frye(Fry) in Mercer Co. He was Mary Ann Fry McLain's father. She got married in 1867 to a Thomas Kenney. So maybe on 1860 census. Do you have that? He would have been born in England, I'd say before 1836. We found a William but his daughter ended up being Mary Elizabeth. Thanks again for your help Melanie

    1. [ILMERCER-L] 6 Free Web Pages for Illinois Research
    2. hi, At one time it was common practice to have several towns of the same name in the state, and many towns and cities had former names with a few having had several, so if you have used a current map to find an old town name you may have created your very own brick walls or even worse you have connected with the wrong lines. "Bloomfield" is an excellent example of this common practice, just look at any current map and find it now in Johnson County close to Vienna, in 1958 it had a population of 80. Did you know there was another Bloomfield in Adams County? Close to Quincy, in 1958 it had a population of 25. There were others in Edgar, Fulton, Greene, Johnson and Scott Counties and all were spelled "Bloomfield." Plus precincts in Johnson and Scott Counties by the same name of "Bloomfield." Nine localities, all named "Bloomfield." Do you need more examples, maybe hundreds of examples? Sure hope you can easily see the point i am trying to make... many genealogies are out there now with improper connections because an inexperienced genealogist has picked the wrong county and matched up the wrong "SMITH" or "JONES" or "WHOEVER" because they thought they had the right county to chose from. Wrong connections are now made as the names that were available in that county were close so they figured a few misspellings or similar names would suffice. Or the town was the correct town but the county changed several times? Some still can't make the connection and are experienced enough to know that close doesn't always count, so they know they have hit a brickwall. My suggestion is that you jot down the towns your ancestors are known to have lived in and look them up on the statewide list of over 16,000 place names using your Ctrl/f keys to do the search. Copy down each county that each town appears in after the town name and you'll probably be amazed to find that instead of them moving all around the state they lived in a few neighboring counties. For details of when the town was active you could consult the web pages listed below for the 25 Northeast Counties and the 44 South Counties as those are now online, and the last 33 West Counties should have details online this week. When those new pages are up and running i'll send out an updated e-mail on each Rootsweb county list as each county becomes available for research. BTW every fact is documented on every entry. The following web pages are enormous and each will take over three minutes to download if your connection is a dial up modem and AOL is NOT busy and your computer is PROPERLY tuned. If you get a message that AOL is busy just rapidly tap on your reload button a few times and AOL wakes up and lets you in.
