    3. Dear George, I am almost sure that Ellen and Elenor are the same people because I just received the marriage certificate for Amanda Mapes and permission was signed by Elenor Mapes. The only child that would be a Mapes would be Viola(Vic) for the age. I have tried to find Aaron and Ellen in the 1850 census and haven't made any headway yet. If I can find that, and there are children, I will know that they don't belong to him. It appears that Ellen(Elenor) is the mother of Daniel Evans as he is with her in 1880 in CO. It just hit me, they must be his children. Apparently he died, since he isn't in the 1860 census and only Elenor's name is on the permissible for Manda to get married. I'll bet they are his kids. Like today, my kids, your kids, and ours. He had to die between 1854-1859 because Viola was born in 1855 or 1856 and he isn't on the 1860 census. I just received info from a Mapes expert and he has Aaron as dying in 1852. I asked him to let me know if this is documented so I can see about Viola. She has to be Ellen's and Aaron's because they married in 1848. I love the mystery of genealogy. 3. Dear George, Do you think that Aaron A. and Eleanor were married in Mercer Cty, Ohio, because if their children were born in Ohio, they surely were married there, don't you think? Nope. Aaron and Elenor (note the spelling of Elenor from the record) were married in Mercer County, Illinois on September 6, 1848. Recorded in Volume A - License No. 370. Where did you learn Aaron and Eleanor's children were born in Ohio? Are you thinking Elenor and Ellen are the same person? I did not find Ellen in the 1850 Census, so she must have came to Illinois between 1850 and 1860 since Viola was 6 years old in 1860 and born in Illinois and they were here in 1860. Now here's a bit of confusion. Checking the 1870 Census again (barely legible) I see that the "Vic" I mentioned is a female, so I'm wondering if they called her "Vie" and that's what the census taker heard and recorded. The age (15) would be right, depending on what time of year the census was taken. Still, the 1860 Census is clear in that she was born in Ohio and in 1870 she was born in Illinois. One of those census takers made a mistake and this could be a key to when she came to Illinois. Folks died young in those days and families got mixed up amoung relatives just to survive. I've seen two children in the same family with the same given name and different ages probably named after a favorite relative and lost their parent/s. 3. Thank you so much. This is more information than I could have ever ask for. I found Ellen Mapes in the 1880 cenus in CO with Daniel Evans who lived with her in the 1860 census and I wondered if he was related and he must have been since her name was Evans. Her daughter Amanda was my gggrandmother. She and Frank Willis moved to Peoria and had my great-grandfather in 1870. Thank you again. In the "History of Mercer County - 1882", a Mr. Mapes and his wife were listed as part of a group that formed the United Brethren Society in Keithsburg. Living with her in Keithsburg Township are; William - age 20, Amanda - age 14, Daniel Evans - age 18 and Viola Mapes - age 6. Scott in the 1880 census of Mercer County. He would have been elderly and possibly living in someone else's household. I would like to know all the info regarding Hugh, and especially his parents' place(s) of birth. Thank you very much, Dwight Scott Good Morning Dwight! This from the "History of Mercer County - 1882" Hugh Smith Scott, farmer, was born in Washington County, Virginia, July 20, 1807, and is the son of Samuel and Jane (Hutton) Scott. He was reared a farmer. His education was received in the pioneer schools of Virginia. September 18, 1828, a few months after obtaining majority he was united in marriage with Sarah, daughter of James and Jane (Clark ) Lion, also a native of the same county. Soon after marriage they emigrated to Indiana, and settled in Fountain County, remaining there until 1856. In that year they again removed, this time to find a final resting place in Mercer County, where he settled on a farm previously purchased of Mr. Gayle. While a resident of Indiana, in 1845, Mr. Scott's friends put him forward as a candidate on the democratic ticket for representative in the state legislature, to which office he was elected by a large majority. As an evidence of his popularity, the township in which he resided, that usually gave a democratic majority of about 80, gave! him the compliment of 144 majority. He was also twice elected county assessor and county collector of Fountain County. He has also held numerous other offices of honor and trust, among which have been that of supervisor of Keithsburg township, and also of justice of the peace for eight years. He has been prominently identified with the Methodist church of Keithsburg since his residence here. Of his large family, Samuel, Jane, wife of Robert Campbell, of Fountain County, Indiana, Lilburn S., Angeline T., Julia C., wife of C. Dryden, Howard and Florilla, wife of William Stewart, are living. Susan is deceased. In the 1870 Census: Hugh S. Scott is 62 years old. His wife Sarah is 62 years old. Living with them are: Angeline - 28, Julia - 26 and Howard - 24. Howard is helping on the farm. Hugh and Sarah are born in Virginia and the other three offspring are born in Indiana. In the 1875 Plat Book: Hugh S. Scott has 39 acres in Section 23 joined by another 40 acres in Section 24. In the 1880 Census: Hugh S. Scott is 72 years old and his wife Sarah is 73. Angeline, age 39, is still living with them. I see that Hugh's parents were both born in Pennsylvania and Sarah's parents were both born in Virginia. How's that for starters? 3. Marna In 1860, Lucy A. is 3 years old when she is living with Harrison and Elizabeth Riggs. (Page 259A, household No. 121.) Did you notice there is also a Lucy A., age 3 and her sister, Sarah - age 6, listed with Anson and Sally Fuller. (Page 852, household No. 1436.) Then I see a Sarah Fuller - age 6 living with the family of John and Mary (can't make out the last name - Page 854) and their offspring nearby in household No. 1450. Are these the same Lucy and Sarah listed twice? Do you have the connection there? Sounds like this family was really split up! 3. Daniel Halstead and Jefferson Fuller are listed as laborers and probably worked for the William Harrison Riggs family as the History of Mercer County seems to indicate he had a very large farm. It also says Riggs and his wife took in orphans. Lucy was not an orphan (in 1860 anyway) since her parents Amos (not Anson) and Sally Fuller were her parents. However Amos seems to have died before 1870 and I am wondering if the family was having trouble surviving and neighbors were helping out with the children. That seems to have been done in those days when there was no other form of welfare and the alternative was the poor farm.
