Thank you, Nadine. I should have tried the website first. No luck finding Mary, but as you said, a marker that old might no longer exist -- if there ever was a marker. Thanks again. Terry Davis's Rootsweb site for Mercer County http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmercer has a cemetery index for Mercer County. Also instructions for obtaining a lookup of the cemetery information. If you don't find your ancestor there it doesn't mean they aren't buried there - just that there was no surviving tombstone when the DAR ladies censused the cemeteries in the 1960's. ----- Original Message ----- From: "RuthAnn Ballard" <ruthab@neto.com> To: <ILMERCER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 26, 2002 9:20 AM Subject: [ILMERCER-L] Mary CRANE, wife of Thomas W. Hi-- I hope someone on the list has access to any Mercer County death records or cemetery records. According to the Illinois Marriage Index, Thomas W. HILL married Mary CRANE in Mercer County on November 24, 1857. I believe Thomas was the son of Thomas HILL and wife, Matilda SHROPSHIRE, who lived in Rivoli Township. I don't know who were the parents of Mary CRANE. It's possible that they also lived in Rivoli Township. In the 1860 census Thomas W. HILL is living with his sister and her family in Fulton County. There is no listing for Mary in the household. Thomas married Henrietta Meddows in Fulton County in 1863. >From this I assume that Mary CRANE died between 1857 and 1860. I would really appreciate it if someone can tell me if there is a record of the death of Mary in Mercer County. Thank you for your help. RuthAnn
The Illinois Marriage Record shows Patsy Ready married Kate Crumbly in Mercer County on June 24, 1880. (Volume 1, Page 34 - License # 4372) Note the difference in spelling. Samuel Zentmire Married Ella J. Cromley on February 9, 1881. (Volume 1, Page 43 - License # 4474 Daniel Fenstermacher married Eliza Cromley on September 18, 1879. (Volume 1, Page 23 - License # 4238) Charles R. Fenstermacher married Ella M. Corns on May 25, 1880. (Volume 1, Page 34 - License #4365) Note: In the 1880 Census, Charles and Ella are shown just a few days after the Census was taken (June 4th), Charles was working at farm labor and Ella was keeping house. In the 1880 Census, the mother, Elizabeth, must have died. Jerimiah Cromley is 61 years old. Living in the same household is his daughter, Mary - age 15, keeping house for her father, William, a 27 year old son and another son aged 17. (Looks like it starts out with John****** - can't make it out.) Is this any help? (Getting sleepy in here!) The year 1852 is given in the source you gave but on the 1920 census forms, the year of John's immigration [column 12] is shown as 1853. The census information also shows that he became a naturalized citizen in 1865 [columns 12 &13]. I would like to find the ship he arrived on and also information from his citizenship papers. Do you have information on these items?

(Probably Allen as shown in the 1920 Census). Their children Margaret and John were most likely named after Jeanette's parents, John and Margaret Millett. They moved from Reynolds to Chicago to live. Jeannette died there. Jeanette's father, John immigrated from England in 1852 as a boy and married Margaret Clelland who had come from Scotland. Twelve children were born to this union; only six of them growing to adulthood. John enlisted in the Civil War. After the war, they eventually settled in Reynolds, Illinois. I know, as I've done it, too, only to realize later that the information IS available, but I went to the wrong source. I visited the Peoria County clerk's office two years ago (for a different family line), and was able to view index entries from the 1880s, and have received an 1883 death cert from them via mail order since. I double-checked just now, and the county website says records are available for people to look at up to 1916, but that you have to go to the state for records after that. Please give it another try. . . I recall they mentioned they have volunteers help with genealogy research. Here's the website address: http://www.co.peoria.il.us/CoClerk/geneal.htm Good luck!

I am still digging though. Wish I could do more. He was born in NY though, but I doubt we could find a birth certificate. I do have all his brothers and sisters names and Sylvester is not one of them. Grasping at straws, but am trying to track down a Jennie or Jane Hogan and her husband Sylvester McNamara. They are buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, NYC, according to a transcription of the Irish born tombstones. . . unfortunately, no dates are given. Do you have William's death certificate, which might provide his mother's name?
