I looked these up in Volume 5 of the DAR Cemetery Records: William C. Sample 1851-1934 Mary Phillips, wife of Wm. C. Sample 1855-1921 Roy M. Sample 1886-_______ Flora W. Maurer, wife of R. M. 1884-_____ Apparently the death dates of Roy and Flora were after the publication date of volume 5. Roy Sample born 25 April 1886 appears in the Social Security Death Index and died July 1967 in Tucson, Pima County, Arizona. There was no entry for Flora. Sent: Monday, November 18, 2002 6:17 PM Subject: sample This is the booklet: written at the farm in Aledo, Illinois 1899 While James C. Sample of Indianapolis Ind. and Alvin Edgar Sample from Lyons, KS were here on a visit to our farm Mary A. Anderson Sample( mother) and I wrote the following geneology of the Sample family, mostly from memory. William Caldwell Sample The earliest knowlage we have of them is four brothers and one sister in Beaver Co. PA--- Robert, Caldwell, William, John and Jane or Jennie married name Clark. They were of Scotch decent Robert married Anna Kirkpatrick and was a Presbyterian preacher in New Castle, PA for about 30 yrs--finishing that sometime prior to 1838. Then I found on the Ancestry web site where there was a family from North C. Samuel Semple and Catherine m. November 8, 1759 They had 8 children and it looks to be that the 4 above here are all included in this family and one child being Caldwell leads me to believe this is the same only there were more children than this booklet mentions. There was William Sample born jun 23, 1760 Thomas Sample born Feb 20, 1762 Isabella S. born May 13 1764 Caldwell S, born Sept. 7, 1766 Mary S. born Sept. 6, 1768 John S. b. Jun 27, 1770 Agnes S. b. Hello List, I wanted to take the time to thank everyone for there help and Information on the Jenks/Sample family of Mercer Co. ILL. Now where can I find a Obit and a Death Cert for Samuel Sample and his Experience (Pratt) Jenks, Sample ?. Experience Sample died July 14 1887 or 1886 Mrs. L. Reilly Northern Oh
Olivia Sure. There could be an error there. However, there were no Sample females married in Mercer County before 1855 and none of the Sample males married in Mercer County before 1864. I just call it the way I see it and that may not always be right. Maybe my suggestion that children died before 1850 was out of line. Mrs. Reilly Nasty, cold day outside in western Illinois, so I'll spend some time on your project. Here's some information to compare/connect with what you already have. I will follow them thru the census reports as they are recorded. Notice the ages do not always show the logical ages when we compare them to the previous/following cenus reports. 1830 Census There are none of the Sample family in Mercer County before the 1830 Census. 1840 Census (The family is farming in Richland Grove Township) The 1840 Census only records the name of the "head of household" and the number of males and females within a given age group which includes that "head of household". Samuel Sample, 2 males under the age of 5, 1 male age 5-10, 2 males age 10-15, 1 male age 30-40 (that would be Samuel), 2 females under the age of 5, 1 female age 5-10, 1 female age 10-15 and 1 female age 30-40 (that would be Experience). 1850 Census (The family has moved to Preemption Township) Samuel Sample age 38 - born in Ohio, Experience age 35 - born in New York, William (L.?) age 16 - born in Indiana, Eli(d?)a E. age 15 - born in Indiana, Martha (L.?) age 12 - born in Illinois, John T. age 8 - born in Illinois, Daniel W. age 5 - born in Illinois and James age 17 - born in Ohio. Note: There were 11 in this family in the 1840 Census. Now we see 8. The mortality rate was very high amoung children in those days. With Experience at age 35, it is not likely that any of the older children had married out of the family yet. 1860 Census Samuel Sample age 59 - born in Ohio, Experience age 60 (!) - born in Connecticut (?), James age 28 - born in Ohio (now a mason by trade), William age 23 - born in Ohio, Levi age 20 - born in Ohio, George age 17 - born in Illinois (was not there in the 1850 Census) and Daniel age 18 - born in Illinois. 1870 Census (Preemption Township, Mercer County, Illinois) This is confusing, but this is the way the census reads: Experience Sample age 70 - born in Connecticut is listed first. Then a Sample Sample age 66 is listed. The handwriting in this case is clear, his name is Sample. So, at this point, I'm thinking Samuel, the husband has died and maybe a brother, Sample Sample, has moved in to help with the farming. William is age 30 - born in Indiana, Daniel W. age 25 - born in Illinois and John age 17 - born in Illinois. Levi J. Sample and his family live next to them. Levi is age 28, his wife, Sara E. is age 23 and their daughter, Alice is age 6. Levi is also John L. Sample. He married Mrs. Sarah E. Smith on July 15, 1866 in Mercer County. Alice is 6 years old in 1870, so she must be the product of Sarah's former husband since she and Levi have only been married 4 years. Sarah would have been 17 years old when Alice was born. This could be the Sarah McIntosh that married Philip Smith on May 3, 1860. That's just speculation, but the dates and ages would work out. 1880 Census Is as Ruth Ann shows here and is clear and legible. I don't know what to make of the recordings in the 1870 Census. Just have to assume the census taker was mixed up with Experience listed where Samuel would normally be and the age and name of Samuel completely out of sinc. Also, the gender of both Samuel and Experience was crossed out and changed in the 1870 report. Anyways, they seem to have it straightened out in 1880 and we see Samuel and Experience living with their son, Levi. And as Martha Stewart would say, "that's a good thing". Samuel Sample owned a 120 acre farm in Section 13 in Mercer County. Unless you already know otherwise, members of this family may be buried in the Jones Cemetery in Section 14 (now abandoned) just about a mile from their farm. 1890 Census Lost in the big fire! 1900 Census John L. Sample is 58 years of age and is living in Preemption Township in the house of Maggie McManus working as a servant. With him is Eunice Sample - 8 years old. Lula B. Sample - age 9 is living nearby with the Bartz Christian family. Gary F. Sample age 11- is living with the John Leek family. Kinda looks like this family was left without parents and the kids were taken in by others. I haven't found any more samples in the surrounding townships yet. I would just like to point out here, that even though Experience was listed as 35 in 1850, she was listed as between 30-40 years old in 1840. Three children between 10-15 in 1840, would make them 20-25 in 1850, and definitely old enough to be out of the house. -----Original Message----- From: George Carpenter [mailto:gcarp@qconline.com] Sent: Saturday, November 16, 2002 1:14 PM To: ILMERCER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ILMERCER-L] Experience SAMPLE Mrs. Reilly Nasty, cold day outside in western Illinois, so I'll spend some time on your project.
