Some of the sisters have been hard to find. My great-grandmother was Eleanora Lilliman. She married Anders Gullberg and they lived in Moline, Illinois. I would be interested in which Lilliman was your step grandmother. I probably have some info on her. Would love to know who she married and when; and when she died--and anything else of interest about her. Thanks alot for your response. Ann

We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We have just published a picture postcard of the MERCER County Infirmary, Aledo, Ill. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on ILLINOIS on the table of states, and finally on MERCER on the table of counties. If you have been to the website recently you may have to click REFRESH or RELOAD on the browser to see the new information. There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newsletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

Alan Here's the follow up on the Greer project I promised. [The book Past and Present of Mercer County, is that available to purchase?] The book "History of Mercer County" with the sub-title "Past and Present of Mercer County, Illinois" was published in two volumns by the S.J. Clarke Publishing Company of Chicago in 1914. The author, Isaac Newton Bassett, was born on September 8, 1825 in Kentucky and came to Mercer County in 1852. He taught school and later became a lawyer. When his book was published, he was 89 years old. The book has long been out of print and is not likely to be found in a local book store. I purchased both volumes at an auction at considerable expense and it has been well worth the cost. The following is the biography of John Edward Greer as it is recorded in Volume II. (Written about 1913-14) JOHN E. GREER For the past six years John E. Greer has served as assessor of Abington township, where he owns and operates a farm of three hundred and sixty acres, being numbered among the well-to-do and enterprising agriculturists of that part of Mercer County. He was born in the township which is still his home, June 3, 1858, a son of Thomas and Minerva A. (Willits) Greer, the former born in Ohio, June 10, 1818, and the latter in Wayne County, Indiana, December 29, 1829. Thomas Greer was a youth of eighteen years at the time of his settlement in Abington Township, the date of his arrival here being 1836. He engaged in farming and as his resources increased, he added to his possessions until at the time of his death he was the owner of one thousand acres of valuable land. Both he and his wife are now deceased. Their family numbered fourteen children; Reuben H., who has passed away; James M., a farmer of Millersburg township; Mary J., the widow of William Griffith of Abington township; Th! omas F., also a resident of Millersburg township; Alice a., the wife of W.C. Thompson, a resident of Burlington, Iowa; John E., our subject; Samuel I. of Millersburg township; Arthur and Lewis W., who died in infancy; Albert C., a resident of Seaton, Illinois; Ella F., the wife of W.A. marsh of Millersburg Township; Dora E., who died in childhood; Robert F., who has also passed away; and one who died in infancy. J.E. Greer remained on the home farm until he attained his majority, during which time he pursued his education in the common schools. He eventually inherited one hundred acres from his father's estate and to this he has since added from time to time until he is now the possessor of three hundred and sixty acres in Abington Township, and in addition to this he also own one hundred and sixty acres in Canada. On his home place he has a good set of farm buildings, which are modern and convenient and are kept in splendid repair. He is here engaged in general farming and as a result of the care he bestows upon his fields he annually gathers rich and abundant harvests. Mr. Greer wedded Miss Mary Marsh, who is a native of the county and a representative of one of the early settlers of Mercer County, her parents being W.A. and Mary J. Marsh. Mr. and Mrs. Greer had thirteen children as follows: P.E. who married and follows farming in Abington township; Harry, who is with his brother, P.E.; Ed, who is married and is farming in Abington Township; Ella, the wife of Guy Douglas of Abington; Bewsie, who died at the age of eleven years; Fay, the wife of Abel J. Clooster of Chicago; Blanch, the wife of Charles Andrews of Millersburg Township; Stella, , Robert, Effie and Gordon, all at home and one boy John, who died at the age of seven. The mother and daughters are members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. In politics, Mr. Greed is a democrat and has served for six consecutive years as township assessor, and he previously filled the office for three years. He has been successful in his farming operations and deserves to be classed with the repr! esentative citizens of this section of the state.

Hi Mercer County List Could someone Please! tell me where/address to order Death Recards for 1879 and 1889, and the Cost? I have the Tombstone information and the forms fill out Just need to know where to send and how much. Really Ayour help, Thanks Iris
Good Morning Billie Jean! (Oops! Took longer than I anticipated! It's now afternoon!) I'll start with the earliest account of John which actually begins with his mother, Minerva . This interesting information from the "History of Mercer County - 1882": Minerva A. Greer was born in Wayne County, Indiana, December 29, 1829. She was the daughter of Reuben and Mary (Harris) Willits. Her parents both died in the spring of 1834 of milk sickness; the mother dying in the evening and the father the following morning. Minerva came to Mercer County in 1836 with her uncle, Thomas Moore, who settled in New Boston Township. She married Thomas Greer on April 15, 1847. Their 14 children were: Reuben H. , James M., Mary J., Thomas F., Alice A., John E., Samuel I., Arthur, Lewis W., Albert C., Ella F., Dora E., Robert F., and a daughter who died when an infant before she was named. Arthur, Dora and Lewis died before 1882. Thomas Greer was born on June 10, 1818 in Ohio and first settled in Abington Township in 1832 0r 1833. (Another account says he moved to Abington Township in 1836.) By 1882, seven of the children were married and living within 2-1/2 miles of the old homestead. Reuben H. Greer married Sarah H. Dungan on July 4, 1871. [Sarah d) Jan. 28, 1931] James M. Greer married Mary E. Douglass on November 11, 1873. [James M. d) Jan. 19, 1934][Mary E. d) Feb. 13, 1926] Mary Jane Greer married George Henry Fox on January 1, 1897. Thomas F. Greer married Eliza C. Marsh on January 24, 1877. [Thomas F. d) May 21, 1937][Eliza C. d) Dec. 30, 1942] Alice A. Greer married William C. Thompson on March 30, 1880. John married Mary Jane. Arthur died. Lewis died. Albert Clarence Greer married Maggie May Kiddo on December 21, 1887. [Albert C. d) Sep. 9, 1950][Maggie - later] Ella F. Greer married William A. Marsh Jr. on March 6, 1888. Samuel I. Greer married Isa R. Marsh on January 19 1881. Dora E. died. Robert F. ? Not sure if this is the same guy that married Bessie Davis. In the 1870 Census, the Greer family is living in Abingdon Township and looks like this: Thomas Greer is 51 years old. His wife, Minnie A. is 41 years old. Reuben is 22 years old, James is 20, Mary J. is 18, Thomas is 15, John E. is 13, Alice is 12, Samuel is 9, Albert is 5 and Ella is 3 year old. Thomas was born in Ohio and all the children were born in Illinois. This is the only Greer family in Mercer County in 1870. John Edward Greer married Mary Jane Marsh on May 7, 1880 in Mercer County. Sometime before the 1880 Census, Thomas, the father must have died. The family is still in Abington Township. Keep in mind, the age shown will vary depending on the birth date and the date the census was taken. The spelling will be as I see it in the Census. Notice the given names passed down thru generations. Menerva is 50, John E. is 22, A. Anna is 23 (this must be Alice - if so, she is now older than John E.) Albert is 14, Ella F. is 12 and Robert F. is 6 years old. Menerva was born in Indiana, her father was born in Ohio and her mother was born in Pennsylvania. In the 1900 Census, I see Edward Greer working as farm labor in Mercer Township. Could be the son of John E., but then it could also be the son of any of his brothers since Edward's parents were born in Illinois. The 1890 Census was destroyed by fire, so I cannot tie Edward back into an earlier family. Mary Jane Greer died on August 10, 1930 in Seaton. In 1935, J.E. Greer is living in Abington Township with his children; Harry, Blanch, Fay, Stella, Ruth, Robert, Gordon, Ella and Effie. Harry Greer married Laura Kiehna and are living on the 536 acre farm of J. E. Greer in Section 11, Abington Township in 1940. John E. Greer died on February 19, 1943 in Abington Township. Robert Greer married Bessie Davis. In 1940, their children are Robert Jr., Willard and Mary Jane. They too are living in Section 11 in Abington Township. Lots of information here, and there's plenty more, but I think I'll just go ahead and send this. I'll follow later with an excerpt of his biography from the "Past and Present of Mercer County - History of Mercer County; Volume II" and I'll take a look at the 1910 and 1920 Census. The Greer family has been prominent in business and agriculture in the county for many years, so there's lots of history here. And since some of the family probably monitor the site, I'll copy it to the web and they may have more to offer. Stay tuned! Thanks kindly George, You are always so good in assisting "BIG" help to members of this group. I appreciate you. I have made note of exactly where you stated Pope Creek is in Ohio Grove Township. I have been close to there a few times. I have a great grandfather (another lineage) buried at the North Henderson Cemetery. And, other kin at the Mann Cemetery. I haven't had any luck yet in getting to those graves yet. The lineage I am now working on, left Pope Creek and migrated on to Adair Co. IL. Thanks again, Anna
I've been following the submissions by George and Karen with great interest, as my ggg grandfather Henry Kimmel and wife Anna Hirst are buried in the Candor cemetery. It has been about 20 years since I visited the church, but at the time I thought it to be a wonderfully preserved reminder of some of the history of my forebearers. I'm glad to hear it is still in good shape. The reason for my query is to see if anyone might have digital pictures of the church. I have a few colored slides, but haven't yet got them converted yet so that I can use them in the electronic recreation of my father's Kimmel research that I'm working on. I believe there is some documentation as to how Henry and Anna were connected to the church. By some, I mean more than what appears in the "History of Mercer County (Illinois) H. H. Hill & Co., Chicago, 1882, pp. 601-603." There it is stated of Anna ..."A sad bereavement befell the family when, August 18, 1846, death claimed the wife and mother. She was a member of the Presbyterian church." This family came to Ohio Grove Township, Mercer County in June of 1840 from Mahoning then Trumbull) County Ohio. If any lister would like to pursue the history of this church further, please contact me directly. I'm very interested in finding out what if any records of the church and cemetery might still exist. Thanks to George for his wonderful evocation of the atmosphere of the historic Pope Creek Presbyterian Church. My husband's ancestor, Josiah Gray, is among those pioneers interred in the Candor burial grounds. Josiah and Lucinda Gray and twelve of their children made the long trek from Somerset County ME to Mercer County in 1854. Unfortunately, on some Candor Cemetery records, Josiah is incorrectly read as Issiah Gray and he is recorded as a Civil War Veteran. Josiah is actually a veteran of the War of 1812. When I moved to the Mercer County area in 1998, I made sure that I attended the Sunday before Memorial Day Service at Pope Creek Church. Those old well-beloved hymns were played and sung and the Minister selected for his text that day, "..so great a cloud of witnesses.." from Hebrews. It was a perfect choice as we all remembered the sacrifice and the sturdiness of all who settled there. We indeed felt their presence. Thanks for bringing a great memory to mind, Karen Gray
Anna: Pope Creek runs in Sections 4, 5 and 6 in the Northwest Corner of Ohio Grove Township. Although Pope Creek does not run in Section 7, it comes close and the Pope Creek (Candor) Cemetery is located in the NW corner of Section 7. [From the History of Mercer County, Illinois - 1882] Thomas Candor set aside the ground for the graveyard for the burial of his wife, Margaret, who died on September 30, 1841. Thomas Candor, who died on March 13, 1871 was an elder in the Presbyterian Church and foremost in building the Candor Church on the property in 1849, now known as the Pope Creek Presbyterian Church. A memorial service is held here each year. And your last question; if you were to go there today, you would find a beautiful old church and the resting place for many of the pioneers who endured the toils and hardships of settling Mercer County. At one time, this church was as far west as the Presbyterian Church had been established in the United States. Both the cemetery and the church are well cared for. I hope you will go there and feel the presence of these early settlers. As for me, I was born on the kitchen floor on a farm along Pope Creek, just a few miles from this site on the coldest January of the depression years. Iris Wanted to contact you off-site, but don't have your email address. Anyways, Alicia Ives may want to help you out with your project. She lives in Aledo and is President of the Mercer County Historical Society. Probably also knows who exactly to contact at the Court House for documentation. It would not be prudent for me to pass her email address on to you, (although the scam artists do it all the time) but she will most likely be reading this soon and may contact you with some advice. Although all of us who monitor this site are probably interested in how this works out, you should give her your email address for a more personal dialogue. Good luck in your search. gc
