Illinois Statewide Marriage Index lists their marriage date as 12 Nov 1853 in Tazewell County, Illinois. Jefferson's parents are George Saul and Nancy White. Nancy White is my 2nd great grandfather Christopher Lintner White's sister. Jefferson and Salinda had children: Mary E b 1854-1855 in Groverland Twp, Tazewell, Illinois; Kate b 1858-1859 in Groverland Twp, Tazewell, Illinois; Homer E b 1863-1864 in Groverland Twp, Tazewell, Illinois; Nancy B b Missouri [could be Bates County]; Anna Lee b 1875 Fairmount Twp, Butler, Kansas. The reason I say Bates County is that Nancy White Saul's father died in 1874 and his obit states she was from Bates County, Missouri. George and Nancy White Saul are buried in Ebling, Butler, Kansas. I assume Salinda is also buried there. She died before 1900. Jefferson died after 1900 in Wichita, Sedgwick, Kansas. I do have census records for the family ! except for 1870.

    3. My grt grt grandmother, Ida Belle Smith, was born in Mercer Co., Ill in 1863. We were told she was adopted out. I have found her on the 1870 Kansas census with this family-James Massey. I also found James Massey in 1860 in Mercer Co., Aledo. In the same census and twp I found 3 Smiths. George and Mary with 4 children; Soemon and Eliza and five children and a single female-Rebecca age 25 b Ireland. Is there someone who can help me/point me in the right direction to find out which is her family? I suspect it would be the Rebecca. Is there someone who might do a lookup at the courthouse? I will be more than happy to pay for anything to find this family! Thank you In advance. K Hribal

There was another obit I obtained last summer for Ella Bailey in a Sep 20, 1898 copy of the Aledo Democrat. Ella's body was brought to Keithsburg on train from Oakville and interned in Greenmound Cemetery. It is a very short account with no other details except the pallbearers. None of them were Bailey's. A website listing of Bailey graves in Mercer Co. only shows John and his daughter Emma at Greenmound. The plot has a small markers for Neddie and Eddie. I walked a good portion of the cemetery last summer looking for John's grave. I heard that there might be another Bailey plot, but did not see it. If I find anything more out I will pass it on. thanks..

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hg.2ADI/660.1.1 Message Board Post: Thanks for the reply Stan. Perhaps I should have mentioned James's parents names. They were Pierce DeShield Bailey(almost always written P.D. Bailey) and Deborah Waterhouse. From what I have heard from other sources, P. D. was born in Carrolton, Kentucky in 1827, to John Bailey (born in Delaware, died Louisa County in 1865) and Sarah Goddard (born Maryland, died Henry Co. IA in 1858). I also have that P.D. had a brother named John C., which could be your John - at this time, I have no other information on him. P.D. named a son John Charles, born in 1857, and I'm guessing this was in honor of his brother. If my James was related, he may well be buried in Keithsburg with the other Baileys. I often wonder why my gg-grandparents weren't buried together, but have found such instances before. I am guessing that several of the family members moved to Keithsburg because of the M&St.L. roundhouse, which was later moved to Monmouth. Thanks again for the information. I'll see if I can connect to it some way. It has been sometime since I last tried to sort all of the Bailey census records I had seen from Oakville and the surrounding areas. There were several, and all seemed related. Your clues should help.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hg.2ADI/660.1 Message Board Post: He could possibly be a son of John Bailey (1/9/1823-5/9/1896) and Martha Ann Fausett. John's obituary states that he had 7 children, six living at the time of his death. The 1880 census listed five of the children living in 1896 and the one who had died. It is possible that James was his eldest son and since he was married in 1876 was off on his own. The obit also stated that John lived in Keithsburg until 1886 then moved across to a farm in Iowa. This is about the time Bill Garmer, my g-grandfather's brother, married John's daughter Sarah. They took up farming around Oakville. I suspect that Bill could have farmed Bailey owned land. Shortly before his death John went back to Keithsburg and died in his son George's home there. Martha remarried 2 years later to Archibald Taylor. I don't know when or where Martha and the other family members died. Their obits might help if they could be located. Maybe James wedding license application may state his father names. I ! have been to the family plot in Keithsburg. There is room for at least 8 there I would say. I know John is there and there are two other markers. Bill Garmer is there without marker. Unfortunately a previous cemetery caretaker destroyed all the records. I had fournd all this out for one of Bill Garmer and Sarah Bailey's descendents. Its nothing conclusive, but I strongly suspect that James could be connected to this family. I can provide a little more information if you are interested. I was raised in that area, but now reside in SW Missouri.

He was listed as a farmer until the 1900 census, where he is shown as a railroad engineer living near Oakville. Several members of the immediate family also worked for the Iowa Central/M&St.L. and moved into western Illinois about this time. In the 1910 census, his wife is listed as a widow, and living in Keithsburg. 1. [ILMERCER-L] Re: THOMPSON FAMILY
    2. George Carpenter
    3. Daniel In the 1870 Census, Benjamin F. Thompson is 29 years old and his wife Emma is also listed as 29. (her age is incorrect here) Their children are John - 11 years old, Margaret is 9 and Mary is 6. This Census shows Emma and the three children born in Pennsylvania. Margaret was born in Pennsylvania, so the family will not be in the 1860 Census. Later censuses show Mary as born in Illinois. That would mean the family migrated to Mercer County between 1861 and 1864. I believe this to be correct. (This is not the same Benjamin F. Thompson featured on Page 621 of the "History of Mercer County - 1882".) Although this family shows up as farmers with real estate of considerable value in Rivoli Township 1870, they do not appear as landowners in my 1875 Platt Book. In the 1880 Census, Benjamin F. Thompson is 40 years old, his wife Emma is 36. Their children; Maggie, born in Pennsylvania, is 19, John, also born in Pennsylvania, is 21, Mary, who is now shown as born in Illinois is 16, Robert is 9 and they have a 2 month old daughter that has not yet been named! (First time I've ran across that in a census) The 1890 Census was destroyed by fire. The 1900 Census shows that Benjamin is 59 years old, born in June 1848 in New York. His parents were both born in Pennsylvania. His wife, Emma is 56 years old, born in January, 1844 in Pennsylvania. Her father was born in England and her mother was born in Pennsylvania. Robert C., born Illinois in August, 1873, is 26 years old and single. His sister, Daisy, born in June, 1880 is 20 years old and single. In the 1910 Census, Robert Thompson - age 39 and his wife, Josephine - age 29 are living in dwelling 448 in Greene Township with their children; Earl -age 7, Lila - age 5, Eva - age 4 and Elsa - age 2. Robert is a farm laborer. Next to this family in dwelling 447 lives Ben F. Thompson - age 76 and his wife, Emma - age 69. Ben was born in New York and Emma was born in Pennsylvania. Ben died on March 6, 1923 in Viola. (This is Robert's parents.) The Illinois Death Record Archives show that Robert Cain Thompson died on February 20, 1920 in Greene Township, Mercer County. The census was taken on 15-16 January, so he still shows up on the 1920 Census. Read on. In the 1920 Census, Robert is 48 years old and farming, Josephine is 37, Earl St. C. (?), is 16, Lilla V. is 15, Eva M. is 13, Elsie F. is 12 and Robert R. is 8 years old. I don't have the 1930 Census yet. If your grandfather was Earl C. Thompson, he was living in Rivoli Township in Section 30 in 1935 with his wife, Sylvia J. (Anderson), and their children; Claire, Wanda, Carl, Verla and Kathleen. They were farming on the 130 acre farm of R. H. Spicer who owned another 90 acres in nearby Section 19. Mind you, I was a 1 year old baby living just 2 miles east of here at that time! In 1940, your grandfather's family was farming in on the M. Garret farm in Section 1 in Rivoli Township and they have added two more children, Eleanor and Earl Jr. Not knowing which of these offspring you sprung from, my search ends here. Doesn't matter. You can probably just go to a relative and fill in the blanks from here. ----- Original Message ----- From: Daniel Harley Cindy Thompson To: gcarp@qconline.com Sent: Monday, January 27, 2003 3:54 PM Subject: THOMPSON FAMILY I WOULD LIKE ANY INFORMATION ON ROBERT CAIN OR JOSEPHINE TYLER THOMPSON WHO WERE THE PARENTS OF MY GRANDFATHER [EARL THOMPSON ].
