    3. Menard County Historical Society Quarterly Meeting Scheduled The next meeting of the Historical Society will be February 12th—Abraham Lincoln’s 200th Birthday. The meeting will be held at the United Methodist Church, 221 West Jackson, Petersburg, Illinois at 6:30 pm. The menu has been specially chosen for the birthday celebration and includes Honey-Dijon Chicken Breasts, Cheesy Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans, Tossed Salad and Mrs. Lincoln’s famous Vanilla-Almond Cake. The cost of the meal is $11.00 and reservations are due by February 8th. The program entitled “Providence of Abraham Lincoln” will be given by Raymond Montgomery. He will focus on the ties Lincoln had with Petersburg and with Menard County. In honor of Lincoln’s 200th birthday, all the programs this year will be about Lincoln. Upcoming programs feature the Lincoln-Douglas debates and a professional actor who portrays Lincoln. This promises to be an exciting year for the Historical Society with great projects underway and wonderful meeting programs planned. Current and prospective members and guests may make their dinner reservations by calling: Helen Nichols at 632-7261, Cathie Smith at 635-5051, Randy Robbins at 632-2325 or Brenda Kistler at 632-2691.

    2. The Sangamon County Genealogical Society will be hosting a research day Saturday, April 10, from 9 am to 1 pm at the society's office 2856 South 11th, Springfield, Illinois. The focus of the day is Starting Out Fresh: Reviewing Your Resources. The office is located three blocks north of Stevenson Drive on 11th Street and Knox and three blocks south of Bunn Park on 11th Street. Members of the society's board will be available to answer research questions throughout the day. Family history materials from the society's library are available for all to view including microfilmed copies of birth (1877-1916), marriages (1821-1925) and death certificates (1877-1940s) for Sangamon County. Surname and obituary files, Auburn Citizen (1874-1965) and other area newspaper microfilms are also available to view at the office. There will also be examples of what can be found in local newspapers while doing research including tips on where to find your ancestors in these valuable resources.
