    3. Harve-- I don't know of any way to access county military death records online, but you can get information at the Illinois State Archives website. Go to: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/databases.html and select the Civil War Database. Follow the instructions for search. I turned up several John Cummings, one of them from Bloomington, although it is possible he may have enlisted elsewhere. This particular John Cummings enlisted in company K of the 8th Illinois infantry. From there, you can go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcivilw/ and look up that unit. The roster is online, and you can see that he enlisted July 1861 and apparently re-enlisted in 1864. He was later transferred to the 23rd infantry regiment. Unfortunately, their rosters are not online at rootsweb yet, but you should be able to write to the State archives and get copies of his roster entry for both units. If he died in the service, it should be noted on the muster rolls. Good luck.
