Thanks to the many of you who responded to my question about obtaining the information necessary to complete Form 84 when the info wasn't online. There were many helpful suggestions including searching the online BLM site thoroughly http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/search.asp, entering various spellings of the surnames, and entering the state and county only without a surname. My searching still yielded no results as Iowa isn't scheduled to be completed online until 2004 so I contacted the BLM for the eastern states via e-mail and this was the reply: "The records that are not available at the GLO Records Website are indexed by land description: section, township and range. We MUST have this to search our records. Our research fee is $15.00 prepaid. You can sometimes learn this info by contacting the local ara courthouse" This prepaid $15.00 fee is to obtain the information needed to complete Form 84 in its entirety thus increasing the chances of the file being located. It would then cost an additional $10.00 ($17.75 after November 13, 2000) to obtain the land entry files from NARA. Who said genealogy was an inexpensive hobby!!?? As NARA only charges if they locate the files, I decided I had nothing to lose by sending in Form 84 with the information that I already have.
