Carla: Schools were called "Ward Schools" before they were named after individuals. In my 1874 Atlas Third Ward extended South and West from Front and Madison Street. They were public schools, of course. The area was settled to a great deal by German speaking people. Some of we oldsters remember the term, not in the least meant as derogatory, referring to them as the South Hill Dutch. What an interesting relative you had! Think of all she lived through.
