Prairie Chapel Cemetery is Now Anchor Township Cemetery. Does anyone on the list have this cemetery book? I need a lookup for FRANK DART and RACHEL DART. Kathy Many many thanks to Pam Haithcock for the following information: On page 56 of the "History of Lawndale, Martin, and Anchor Townships and the Villages of Colfax and Anchor" they have this article on Prairie Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church Prairie Chapel Church was built in 1874 by a group that had been meeting in a schoohouse. Major J.B.T. Mann gave four acres from the southwest corner of his farm for a church and cemetery. A frame building, 30 feet by 40 feet, was erected at a cost of $1300. Messrs. G.D. Butler, Alex Shannon, J.C. Swatsley, Z.C. Worley and H.A. Thompson were selected to look after the work. It belonged to the Fairbuy circuit. Reb. A.W. Green of Potosi, preached there once a month. Later it was part of a charge with Colfax and Bethel Methodist. In June 1890, the church was moved into the village of Anchor and it became the Anchor Methodist Church. After the church was moved, the cemetery became neglected. In 1903, three members of the Anchor church, J.W. Labertew, N.H. Watson and John Martensen were appointed to look after the cemetery and make arrangements for its care. J.W. Labertew made a map of the cemetery and entered the names of the owners of many of the lots. There had been burials there for 30 years, so there are indications the map was not complete. No record of burials had been kept. A little record book listed some information, and these two records have been valuable through the years. It was decided in 1903 that the lots should be sold for $10 each. During the following years, the cemetery was again uncared for. In 1936, after a vote approving the proposition, the land was deeded to Anchor Township and it became the Anchor Township Cemetery. Trustees are elected, and a small levy provides funds for the maintenance of the former Prairie Chapel Cemetery. Many of the burials here were members of families who left the Anchor area many years ago. Once recognizes names on the stones, of settlers listed on early records.
