Hi Diane, When my Dart ancestor, Selah M. Dart died in the 1840's in LaSalle, IL all his children were "farmed out". One went with an older married sister, but the rest were slplit up among neighboring farms. From my own experience growing up in rural MN, I am sure these children were expected to work right along with the rest of the farmers children.
