1930 Mclean Co. Census look-up request: Hibbard Monroe Harris, possibly in the Leroy area. First name is often mispelled and he sometimes went by Monroe rather than Hibbard. For anyone who doesnt have census access: I am willing to do lookups for Mclean County, on the 1930 census now that they have it indexed. :) Just send me the name of the person you are looking for in Mclean County and I will see what I can find. Leslie Maurice
The number for The Fort should be (309)365-4591. The gremlin that lives in my computer threw in that extra 7. Sorry
Unfortunately, no. It was suggested to Verda many times but she didn't like the idea. There are so many requests by mail and phone that I guess she didn't think she could keep up with one more. > hi there; > I take it the "fort" does not have an internet connection. > > jack > > > > ==== ILMCLEAN Mailing List ==== > > McLean County website: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmclean/index.htm

hi there; I take it the "fort" does not have an internet connection. jack
What happened to Verda
Rhonda, The Fort is a small building in Lexington which bulges at the seams with information. There are records of the cemeteries in McLean and Livingston Counties. Those are the 2 main counties but there are bits and pieces from a good share of the counties in IL. There are obits, birth, marriage and death indexes and microfilms of census. There are undertaker records from a goos share of the area funeral homes. People have donated family histories. Verda Gerwick was in charge for many years. She walked cemeteries, and organized information. She was familiar with a lot of the old families in the Lexington area and could tell a lot of stories about our ancesters. She did research for people who called or wrote requests. All in all, she is an amazing woman. She didn't do this all alone. There are numerous volunteers who have helped with this and many still are. But she's the one who sparked an interest in alot of us. Since it is still going stron, you can write the following address for information or to join. There is no charge for lookups but donations are very much appreciated and needed. Verda is still around but her health prevents her from being at the Fort. It's not the same there without her. I saw her in the fall and she didn't remember me but then there were a lot of us to remember. I'm sure she misses it as much as we miss her. > What happened to Verda > > > ==== ILMCLEAN Mailing List ==== > > Email or ISP changes: unsubscribe your old email address prior to the change effective date. Thanks Lois. I feel somewhat better. I know Benny is there on Wednesdays so I think I had better go see him and do my part to keep the rest in tact. I thought probably some of the things stored in the vault were what was taken but it opened my eyes to what a great place it is and that we 'could' lose it. I don't want to see that happen. Just talked with one of the volunteers (Bennie) and he said The Fort is still in Lexington, IL. Nothing from the genealogy was taken by the City of Lexington. The Fort was storing some documents pertaining to the city only. The documents were of council meetings, etc. They were actually in books and Bennie said that the material taken could be put in a large suitcase and both The Fort and the City had receipts saying what was held in storage and the material taken was checked off by each. The material was taken to the Community Center or City Hall (whatever it is called). The Fort is still going strong. Bennie said an article was in the Pantagraph a couple days ago. I have not read it yet, but whoever wants to read it can go into the pantagraph site. Lois Illinois
I just read that the City of Lexington has removed the historical documents from The Fort in Lexington. Does anyone know what was removed? Also is there a dark cloud forming over The Fort? I haven't been able to go for quite awhile and I'm not sure what's happening there since Verda is no longer the caretaker. I know it's been manned by volunteers. It would be such a major loss for Livingston and McLean Counties for it to close. If anyone has any information please let me know. Peg J

You can find info on many of these sites and companies at the Genealogy Hall of Shame. Just do a search on google and you wil find the site. You can also forward the emails you receive to the ISPs. They all have an abuse email addy that is located on their websites. What you are receiving is spam and in some cases, it's also a SCAM to get your money. Be sure to check the internet details in those emails you receive, so you can find out where the email actually originates. Hotmail for example, you need to read the details, to find the ISP. It's all very easy to find and report. I get these emails all the time and I forward them to the abuse addies I find on the websites of whatever ISP the emails come from. Just beware of who you send your money to and be sure to check them out first and also to ask around. And now I am outa here til after the holidays! Debbie
I am going to back you up on this one. I got an email about 2 months ago that was similar to what you are mentioning. They claimed that they had definitely found my Clara Jackson in their database and to check it out. When I went to the site it asked for my credit card info. I left the site without a second thought. I cannot remember the name of the site but it wasn't genseekers. I really knew that the site wasn't legitimate when I received the email because it contained some info that could only have come from a message I left on another list that I have since concluded is incorrect. If they had contacted me a few months before their so called lead would have looked very promising. Be careful, beware, and have a safe and happy holiday season. For Bev seeking info on Jane Johnson Simpson and infant possibly buried at Shiloh cemetery. My listing of Shiloh Cemetery, Randolph Township, McLean County (IL) lits only an "infant son" Simpson, d. Feb 12, 1902 age 1 day. No Jane Johnson Simpson listed either under Johnson or Simpson. I was at the Shiloh Cemetery last May. We found it to be one road further than the directions given us at the local library, possibly go to 1800E and go north. The directions given in the cemetery listing book for Shiloh or Mayberry Cemetery--- section 25; 1700E to 400N; turn east onto 400N and go to T-intersection; turn south (1775E) and watch closely for a sign on the right saying "Shiloh Cemetery." There is a grass lane to the cemetery. Judy Washington state researching COCHRAN and SNIFF in McLean County, Illinois
