Oops--I found George Duffield married to Susan Utz in Richland county, so my Conrad must have been married to Susan's sister. Will check that family. But, still if any info out there, please let me know. jeanne
Does anyone have any connection with a George Duffield? While searching for my Mueller ancestors in Bloomington, I found my gr grandfather's brother Conrad Mueller in the 1900 census living with his brother-in-law George and wife Susie. Conrad had 2 daughters--ages 3 and 4 living there also, but no wife so assume she had died. According to Conrad's obit in 1931, he had been married to Louis Utze in Olney, but there is no record of it in that county. I'm thinking that was incorrect and she was possibly a Duffield??? Any help will be appreciated. Jeanne Hughey
I am looking for information on children of my great grandmother. She remarried after my great grandfather died to Charles Gring. I just found out from her obituary printed in the Bloomington "Pantagraph" that she had two additional children after this marriage - Hattie who married Fred Green and a son Charles who died at age 15. Does anyone know anything about these children or how I would find birthdates, etc. Any help would really be appreciated. Donna Fakler [email protected]
Hi Joe, I don't remember if I have answered your email or not. I didn't delete it so I am assuming I haven't. I don't have any information on the names you have given but we have a little park here in Downs and it is called Dooley Park. You may already know that. I believe the land it is on was donated by a Dooley. Do you have any old information on Downs? I am looking for any information that has to do with the names of Phillips in Downs and Wilcox in Downs. I have ties to both of these names and very little information on either concerning the relatives of Theophilus and Lavina (Wilcox) Phillips. I would love to connect to people that relate to either of these names. Hope you find what you are looking for. =====Original Message===== From: [email protected] Date: Thu, Sep 14, 2000, 4:13pm (CDT+1) To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ILMCLEAN-L] RE: ILMCLEAN Names Found Hi Debbie, my name is Joe Downs. Hi everyone, In looking through this old picture postcard book, I came across a birth announcement that a couple sent out to their friends after their daughter was born. Thought I would share it in case it is someones family!! It has a picture of a stork and it reads: We are proud to announce that the Stork visited us August 17 and brought us a precious package, which weighed 8 lbs. It came C.O.D. from Babyland. We think it's a little cherub, and we call it Mary Margaret. Kindly call and see our treasure. It is signed Mr. and Mrs L.Y. Meaus, Saybrook, IL The postmark date is Aug 19, 1912-2pm-Saybrook, IL and it is addressed to a Mrs. J.B. Stine in Hoopeston, IL (which is a gg aunt of mine) If anyone finds that this is their relative, let me know and maybe we could get a copy of it for ya! Leslie
I don't think I have run into it yet, and I'm sure I will, but that's a funny point. Of course it was. I wonder if they ever found out who set all those fires in all the courthouses I research? 8-) >FYI. Most of the 1890 census was destroyed in a fire. > >Carolyn Caplinger
When I posted that item about the migration to Nebraska I had forgotten that land in NE had been opened to Union Veterans and you know that prompted a lot of them. However, my Robert LARIMER was too old for that - his son wore blue. Kay
To the person looking for Bierbower surname: I saw that surname listed on the 1880 census for Martin Township. You can view it online at: http://members.tripod.com/~GenFamily/census.html Hope this helps everyone.
Hi everyone, If anyone out there is living in Mclean County and has access to some census records, would you want to do a lookup for me????!!!! If you are, and want to, email me and I will give you specifics! Thanks Leslie Maurice

I found in an article regarding the American Legion Charter for the Witt-Webber-Carrell Post at Arrowsmith (established April 28, 1920) that a C.T. Bierbower was one of these original members at that time. Thats all I found on those but I hope it helps. Leslie
Here is some food for thought on why our ancestors left the land of milk and honey in Illinois: If one puts the date and time in context with what was going on in history, some of the reasons our ancestors went to Nebraska and Kansas and elsewhere might begin to make sense. Many of these families had come to Illinois and Indiana in the 1820-1840's. That was were the "free" or "cheap" land was being promoted. The US Govt was finally opening up what was the frontier at that time. Thousands came, along with vast immigrations from Europe and Canada, too. It didn't take long for most of the land to be acquired, especially the better lands. An example of promotion was that given to my Swedish ancestors in the 1840's and 1850's. However, they, like many others found that in post Civil War era, that Illinois and Indiana wasn't the "west" nor the "frontier" any more and that there wasn't any "free" or "cheap" land to be had there anymore. The "new west" was being openned up by the Govt. and promoted as "free" and "cheap". Those that didn't have the best pieces of land in Illinois/Indiana, or were farm hands, or just couldn't make it, or had that pioneering spirit, or didn't inherit the homestead, or had a fight with dad, or religious freedom, etc., took off for the new land. Much for the same reasons that father or grandfathers' generations had left KY, VA, Europe, Quebec, etc. Also happening at the same time were strides being taken in medicine. Mortality rates were going down. Families were getting big. 3 brothers who came to McLean Co in the 1830's had some 18 grandsons. Where are they going to farm? You can't keep breaking down the family farm into smaller units. Land companies and towns did promotions. I've seen the fliers for the area around Limon, CO. You'd think Limon was something akin to heaven from the "come on" given in the promotion. Sometimes, large groups (often connected through marriage or just neighbors) would decide to go west together to the same location. YOu know-safety and security in numbers to establish a new community. I have examples of this for a French community in Kansas (north of Salina) that came from IL, as well as for a Swedish community south of Salina, KS, that came from central IL. Both of these moves happen to be organized by the church leadership. Like they say, it's hard to keep'm down on the farm.... Those young men who fought in the Civil War, just weren't content anymore. Many had discovered a whole new world out there.
