    1. [ILMCLEAN-L] James and Catharine Johnson-McLean Co ILL
    2. Is there anyone out there researching James and Catharine Johnson in McLean Co ILL ? I have found land records for them on the BLM site that show James was buying land in McLean Co as early as 1834. Some of the land James and Catharine Johnson bought is right next to the land of my 4th greatgrandfather William P Hampton, so I am looking at James and Catharine as maybe being the parents of Susannah Johnson who married John H Hampton in McLean Co in 1840. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jaime [email protected]

    1. [ILMCLEAN-L] Dr JOHNSTON - early McLean County ILL
    2. Has anyone run across any reference to a Dr Johnston in the early history of McLean county Illinois ? The only information I have on the father of my 3rd great grandmother Susannah Johnston is that her tombstone lists her as the daughter of Dr Johnston. Susannah Johnston married John H Hampton in McLean county in 1840, so I assume her parents were in the area sometime before 1840. I know that John Hampton was living in the Randolph Grove or Heyworth area of McLean County , so Susannah Johnston must have been in about the same area for them to meet and marry. If anyone has any information on a Dr Johnston in this area, I would really appreciate the help. Thanks Jaime [email protected]

    2. In answer to the question about Illinois Soldiers and Sailors Children's School. www.iltrail.org/institution.htm states the following about ISSCS. Home for Union Army Soldiers' Children At Normal, the state has established a "Home for the intellectual, moral and physical development of children whose fathers served in the Union army or navy during the war." The idea of founding this home originated in a "most patriotic impulse on the part of the people to fulfill the pledge made to the gallant soldiers who imperiled their lives on the field of battle during the dark days of the Civil War, that if they fell in the fight, the widows and children should be cared for." This pledge is being sacredly kept by the State and nation. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I left Illinois 7 years ago, but the last thing I knew about ISSCS was that it was being turned into a shopping complex. I took a couple of college classes there in 1981 through Lincoln College. It had been fairly empty for a few years at that point, but was still in operation in the 70's. I'm sure you could get information about the school from the Illinois State Archives; their address is at www.usgenweb.com or www.sos.state.il.us. IRAD may also have information. Check www.usgenweb.com, select state information, then Illinois. If you read about how to request records, you may find more information. Hope that helps. Good luck.

    1. [ILMCLEAN-L] SOLDIERS & SAILORS ORPHANAGE
    2. I am looking for information on the old Soldiers & Sailors Orphanage that was once located in Normal, McLean County, IL. My grandmother Mollie SANDERS George was sent there with one of her sisters in around 1904. Her father had died and her mother could not take care of all the children. She lived there for just a few years but I'm not sure of when she was there or how long. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    2. In a message dated 10/3/00 5:02:25 AM Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: << Hi everyone, about this question: Would anyone out there know where or anything about the Illinois Central Hospital for the insane? It would have been in the year of 1887 that this person was sentenced to go there. I would like to find out more information about this hospital, etc. Thanks, Leslie >> iltrails.org has the following, published 1900 about insane asylums in Illinois. Asylums for the Insane << No class of unfortunates appeals to us more strongly than the insane. Miss Dorothea Dix early applied herself to the bettering of their pitiable condition. When the State legislature met, she addressed to them an eloquent and convincing argument favoring the establishment of an asylum for the care of the insane. Accordingly, such a hospital was located on a beautiful stretch of prairie-land a mile south of Jacksonville. From 1851, the year in which the first patient was received, the institution has grown and prospered. In 1869, the legislature provided for the erection of two other hospitals: One known as the Northern Home for the Insane, located on the banks of the Fox River, near Elgin [Kane County] the other established at Anna. Although these hospitals are very large, in a few years, the State was compelled to build another, which was located near Kankakee. Illinois now has nine hospitals (or asylums), for the insane. They are located in Elgin, Kankakee, Jacksonville, Anna, Watertown, Peoria (South Bartonville), Chicago (Dunning), Chester (for insane criminals). One of the nine hospitals provided for by law is not yet fully established. >> There is also an 1880 census of the hospital in Elgin, which appears to have people from all over the state. I hope that helps. The website has a search engine.

    1. Re: [ILMCLEAN-L] re Dunlap
    2. My great uncle's wife was a Dunlap. She was the daughter of Moses and Sarah (Campbell) Dunlap. She was born in 1900 in LeRoy, Illinois. She has brothers, Sy Dunlap and Jim Dunlap and I believe that there was 1 more brother. She also had a sister named Caroline. I forgot to say the name of whom I am talking about. Her name was Katherine (Dunlap) Phillips. She married Laban T. Phillips in about 1921-1923. Laban was the night captain on the Bloomington, Illinois Police Department until his retirement in 1944 or 1945. He died in 1953. There are articles and some with pictures in the Pantagraph and those are on reels at the Bloomington Library. I don't have my information in front of me but I have a small biographical write up that was in a McLean County Biographical Sketch book at the Bloomington Library. If you would like for me to pass it along to you let me know. Moses was a prominent figure in the LeRoy, Illinois area. ~:~Debbie From Illinois~:~

    3. Hi, Leslie - Perhaps you could check your book for any Palmers. The family I am looking for is John Palmer and his wife R.V. Stedman. They came from virginia to Adams Co., Ohio, where their children were born: George Washington Palmer and Tacy Elizabeth Palmer and possibly others. The family moved to McLean Co., IL. I don't know when. Tacy Elizabeth Palmer (b. 18 Sep 1845, d. 06 Sep 1920) was married to George Allen Brown in Mclean Co. on 12/02/1875, and her son Ross Brown was born in Lexington, McLean Co., in 1882. Tacy, George and infant Ross Brown (my grandfather) then moved to Fillmore Co., NE. Thanks for checking for Palmers. I know that this is a Mclean County page, but alot of ancestors (as mine did) came from Virginia before Illinois so..... if you want me to check, I can do that and I hope it helps!!
