I have obtained war records for this man if anyone is researching Noble name .
Fellow researchers, This may sound strange but, may help me in my family search. What was the primary mode of transport to McLean Co. for the early settlers who arrived around 1850? I know there were federal highways and also and active riverboat system. Was the Illinois river part of this network? My GGrandparents, JOHN WESLEY SHATTLER and JANE DONOVAN SHATTLER came to McLean Co. from Clark Co. OH. They appear on the 1850 census in Clark Co. and there second child, NOAH was born in McLean Co. March 22, 1851. They later traveled to Iowa Co. IO where my grandfather, JOHN WESLEY, Jr, was born May 26, 1855. They then returned to McLean Co. before the 1860 census. They settled in the Cooksville area. I know they were in Iowa because other family members moved there. Jane's father, AQUILLA DONOVAN, died in southeast Iowa in 1858. That is all I know. John Wesley is my "brick wall" which I have been trying to overcome. He reported that he was born in VA on census records. Sometime before or after leaving VA the family name was modified from SCHUTTLER, SHETLER or something close to that. The only adult family in Clark Co. OH was A. F. SHATTLER and wife CATHERINE. The Aquilla Donovan's and A. F. Shattler's appear on the 1850 Clark Co. OH census but not in the city directories which began in 1852. Did they leave together and go to Iowa or maybe through McLean Co.? If down the Ohio river and up the Mississippi River, Iowa seems reasonable. I have never been able to identify A. F. Shattler as the father of my GGrandfather John Wesley. I thought maybe if I got to his death place there may have been legal documents executed. I know it sounds far-fetched but any suggestions or comments. Thanks, Don Shattler
Dear Lisa, Thank you so much for your time. I am thinking that his death Certificate is next. I also think maybe he died young before 1900. Thank you again for the valuable info. Lesley, I checked for members of the Deadmore family in the resources that I have available/can manage with no positive results. City Directories--They did not have the year 1900 at either library but they did have several years before and after and I found no sign. The city directories have been quite reliable in the past. Usually the people that I have checked for who resided in Bloomington have been there. Cemetery Records--I checked the cemetery listings at the historical museum library and again found nothing. I don't believe that the Bloomington books are complete, as I have found people missing on lookups before. I did call the one cemetery (Evergreen/Old City) in Bloomington that would have been a very good possibility for a resident of Bloomington to be buried and they have no record of Deadmore's buried there. If you haven't already done so, you might consider ordering a search for a death certificate and see if anyone shows up that would give you more specific information. If you have a small range of years they can check for you at the county clerk's office--death records circa 1900 were standard and should be quite reliable. Vital record look-ups are not an option here in McLean County. Sorry no positive news turned up. Hi Leslie, You didn't mention the town my husband's ancesters came from, which is Chenoa. So far we haven't found the parents of his grandfather, Albert Wilder, so maybe they lived in another town. We have looked at the 1880 and the 1860 census for McLean County. If you find a Wilder, would you let us know? Thanks a lot. Jane Wilder
Greetings Leslie, Is there any reference made to the Rayburn surname who may have lived in Arrowsmith about that time? Hi list, I am going to work on my family from a different angle... and see what I can find out about the daughter-in-laws/son-in-laws. I am looking for information on Sarah A. KERR. She susposedly married Israel SCHOOLEY on Mar 07, 1869 (location not specified). I have not found this marriage in the IL marriage database, regardless of the variations I have tried. This what I have found in the census and military databases: 1860 census index, De Witt Co, Town of De Wett, Israel Schooley, pg 254 (on previous page is his mother Eliza Schooley, pg 253) 1870 census, DeWitt Twp, IL, Israel Schooly (note spelling), 33, farmer, IL, Sarah A., 21, IN, Florene M., 6/12, IL. Also living with this household is Charles WILLIAMS, 13, farm laborer, IL, dwelling 94, family 95 (right next door to Presley Williams and 18 houses down from William Presely Williams who married Israel's sister Mary E. Schooley.) Israel is listed with a 1861-1862 list of white males, age 18-45, who were able-bodied and subject ot miltiary duty for the Civil War for DeWitt Twp. I can find no evidence he ever served. His brother Alfred did. A letter, dated March 6, 1913, address Beloit, KS, from Lucy A. Williams to her son Walter, says the "Papa helped your uncle Isael move yesterday." This may have been in reference to Israel. Another letter from Lucy to Walter, dated May 22, 1919, from Agate, CO, says "She is coming in a car with Isaes. They are bringing Ethel out here for her health." The surname for Sarah comes from family info (Israel Schooley's father Samuel's bible). Israel's father Samuel was first in McLean Co, and then in DeWitt Co. If any of you on the list are familiar with the Kerr family (or similar spelling), and might have info on Sarah, please contact me: [email protected] Thanks, Ellen -- Picard Pines: http://homepage.plix.com/picard/ Morrison-Picard Family: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/p/i/c/Ellen-J-Picard Picard Surname Homepage: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~picard/Index.html

I just went to familysearch.com to check out the death index. I did find one under the Cook Co. IL heading. 1871-1916. It is available on microfiche. I did not check other counties. But what I understand there is a state index... Lesley - --------------------------------------------- FREE! The World's Best Email Address @email.com Reserve your name now at http://www.email.com
You can also find this microfiche at some libraries. I know that the Wheaton Public Library (in Wheaton, IL) and the Indian Prairie Library (in Darien, IL) have this microfiche available for patrons. Other libraries may also have it. Hope this helps, myra
I have a person in Illinois that looked up some family members for me & sent me a hard copy. On the top of the page it reads ILLINOIS DEATH INDEX 1916-1947.(It's black with the white letters) I believe he copied from microfilm from the Mormon Church LDS. I also know there is an earlier one in the late 1880's to early 1900's & this is on microfilm.(But he didn't have this one.) There is also an index on microfiche...I think this is also thru the LDS Church. Lesley - --------------------------------------------- FREE! Richard, I do not have any personal interest in the Frazier or Shorthose families and only posted the Shorthose bios for [email protected] so that she could get some idea of how the Shorthose family fared in the US. I will plan on mailing you copies of the bios and maps as I already have to run them in order to transcribe them. I still have some additional typing to do so it will have to wait until that is complete. I wanted to make certain that you have found this resource--IRAD, at the following address. I already checked for Shorthose and there is a lot there. Use the global search function and type in Shorthose with a comma after it and it will give you plenty of hits on this family group. The information that is online can also be ordered for reasonable prices through IRAD. http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/arc_home.html#databases I haven't transcribed this yet, but here's a section from a bio on John L. Shorthose with quite a bit of Frazier information: Portrait & Biographical Album of McLean County Illinois 1887 The subject of this history was married to Miss Elinore Frazier, in Ohio, on the 12th of October 1851. Mrs. S. was born in Belmont County, Ohio, on the 16th of October, 1831, and is the daughter of Andrew and Emily (McCoy) Frazier, both natives of Virginia. Andrew Frazier was born in 1804, and late in life removed to Missouri, where he died in 1880. His wife Emily was born in 1808, removed to Missouri with her husband, and died there the year following his decease. She was a member of the old-school Presbyterian Church. The parental family consisted of thirteen children, seven of whom are still living. The record is as follows: Jan, Rosanna, Elinore and Hanna are married and established in comfortable homes; Samuel died when seven years of age; then followed Martha A., William, John A. and Robinson, the latter of whom died in 1862; Francis is deceased; next was another son; also named Samuel; Maggie and Emma are deceased; four boys of the family served as soldiers in the Union army in Ohio regiments. That's all I have time for now. I have copied to this to the McLean County list in case other researchers are looking for these people. Where did you find an Illinois Death Index? Is it online? A question: Is the Illinois Death Index referred to in this letter on the Internet? If so, how could I access it? Thanks. Don and Others, All messages that are exchanged on this mailing list (and many others) are archived at the Rootsweb site and are accessible to all. The Bible message was no exception. To access the archives, go to the Rootsweb site www.rootweb.com Scroll down the left hand column to the section entitled MAILING LISTS. Once there, select either Interactive Search or Threaded Archives. When it asks for the mailing list type in ILMCLEAN and you will be able to access many messages. The Interactive Search works via a search engine so you should be able find the message by typing in ONE of the following words "Baize, Bible, Young, Webb, Young, Kent. The threaded archive search has messages listed by subject in the order that they were received. This message was sent on August 31, 2000 and had the heading YOUNG/McLean Co., IL Searching the archives for any mailing list can yield some great results. There is also a list of all mailing lists that might have information that could be valuable for your surnames. So give it a shot and see if you can't dig this up yourself. Happy Hunting!
