I have run across a short marriage of Elizabeth EVANS to Abram HOBBS in McLean County around 1827. Does anyone know if they had a daughter Leodicy? Abram must have died, because Elizabeth married William MAXWELL in April, 1829. I just don't know if Leodicy's father was Hobbs or Maxwell. She seems to have married a Henry DICKERSON before 1850, and had a daughter Jane E., 6 mo. old, in that census. Would like some help straightening out the family line. Margie Bridges
Robert, I checked on the church information at the historical museum library this weekend. I checked thorugh the card catalogue, archive contents, church histories, and did a further check in some biographical/historical-type books. I found that you were most fortunate to have gained what information that you already have. I don't believe I found additional references to the Bethel on Mackinaw church that you were seeking, but here's some of what little there was from various sources: --It is deeply regretted that the early records of the beginings of most church histories have been lost.... --Too many churches have come and gone to be mentioned... --The Rev. E. Rhodes, a Free-Will Baptist minister...made his home here and preached many times in McLean County... --The Baptist Church at Bloomington is a pioneer having been organized in 1837. It is occupying its fourth sturcture, having progressed quite rapidly in wealth and membership... There were several church histories on the above mentioned Baptist Church (it became First Baptist), but none of the names you mentioned were listed. To contact the library directly with historical questions contact Pat Hamiliton at [email protected] I don't know if she responds to research questions herself or passes them on to volunteers. She is very helpful and very knowledgable about the library resources, but I would guess that they charge a research fee for inquiries. Good luck on your research, Lisa _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
Thank you to Lisa for the wonderful websites she provided. I am researching Franklin Cochran 1810 - 1864/5. He was born in PA, married in Ohio in 1836; moved to Randolph, McLean co., IL about 1860. He died and is buried there about 1865. I am seeking additional information. I do know that four of his five children moved to IL with him, his wife died in Ohio in 1848. Children were: Elizabeth Cochran, Rebecca J. Cochran(e); William George Cochran(e), Isaac E. Cochran, and John C. Cochran. I decend from John C. Cochran who married in Champaign Co., IL. Any info on this family would be appreciated. It is mainly Franklin, Elizabeth, and Isaac that I need info on. Thank you, Judy in Washington state
Gladys, It looks to me as if you have a match. I have no connection to this family, but live here in McLean County. I have several items checked out from the library that contain information that will be of interest to you. >From the book Soldiers of the Revolution Buried in McLean County by Milo Custer (reprint p. 2) McGhee, William, b County, North Carolina, Oct .1756. (Military History in Pension Commissioners Office, Washington, D.C.) Settled in what is now McLean County, Ill. 1828, d. Diamond Grove, October 6, 1843. Buried in Diamond Grove Cemetery, Section 7, Downs Township, McLean County, Ill. (See U.S. Pension List, 1840, and Gravestone. Information also from G. W. Downs, Bloomington, Ill. 1912) Wife, Rebecca (Satterfield) Downs-McGhee, Dau. Mary (McGhee) Trovea. (note: Where it says Information also from G. W. Downs , that often means that there is a letter or note at the archives of the Library at the McLean County Historical Museum. You can find a current township map of McLean County at the following website: http://www.mcfb.org/oldbarns/townshipmaps.htm Regarding Diamond Grove: It was a small collection of timber on the Kickapoo River, in Sections 5, 6, and 7 of Downs Township. The 1828 arrival date wouldve made him a very early settler here. You may have already checked out the Illinois Archives site, but I will mention it just in case. The IRAD site is at the web address listed below. You can put in specific names and search for a county. I also recommend doing a surname search, typing in only the surname with a comma after it, to see the family groups. There is information about the Trovea family there. http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/databases.html In the book, The History of McLean County 1879, in the section about Downs Township, there is mention of a Thomas Toverca which looks like a possibility. He served in the War of 1812 and must have been quite colorful as it says here that he was a rough, uncouth man, of no early culture. In 1861 he moved to Iowa and died in Oskaloosa. There may be more on these people at the libraryI can check for you if you are interested, but I do have several other look-ups on my list to do first. This hopefully will at least get you headed in the right direction. "Among the old settlers were to be found some soldiers of the Revolution. The following is taken from the records of the County Commissioners' Court for Dec 1832". "John Scott came into open Court and on his oath made a declaration purporting to prove himself a revolutionary soldier, for the purpose of obtaining the benefit of the act of Congress, passed June the 7th, D. D. 1832." Eight others were certified by the Court as being such. They were Ebenezer Barnes, William McGhee, Thomas Sloan, Edward F. Patrick, Charles Moore, William Vincent, Edward Day and John Toliday." Would the McLean County Court have this information?? Hi Diane, When my Dart ancestor, Selah M. Dart died in the 1840's in LaSalle, IL all his children were "farmed out". One went with an older married sister, but the rest were slplit up among neighboring farms. From my own experience growing up in rural MN, I am sure these children were expected to work right along with the rest of the farmers children.
