My great uncle died in tne C & A railroad yard in 1899. His death certificate is from McLean Co. but lists his burial in Pontiac IL.Livingston Co. His marriage license lists his residence as Bloomington. Why would he be buried so far from where he worked? He was from VA & his wife from LaSalle CO. so no family in Livingston. I did notice the railroad crosses in Pontiac Twnp. what am I missing???? Lesley ----------------------------------------------- FREE! Lesley, There was a book published about the C & A Railroad Shops (Chicago & Alton)that is very informative and have a number of photos of the railroad yards through the years. It is called Bloomington's C & A Railroad Shops: Our Lives Remembered, editors Matjeka and Koos 1988. It could probably be borrowed through interlibrary loan or purchased through the used bookstore site www.addall.com The C & A Shops were an important part of Bloomington's history as they were a MAJOR employer here in Bloomington in their years. You can drive over the bridge of the railyard today and see where the shops once were. Many of the huge buildings were torn down only a few years ago as they had deteriorated badly and had become a safety hazard. IRAD shows a Probate Record for George Albert O'Brien, date span 1875-76, for McLean Co. I am seeking Geo. O'Brien in IL m. to Catherine Quirk. They both came from Ireland, but don't know whether they m. in Ireland or in IL. Any info would be appreciated.
For Cara, about McLean County death records: IRAD will do a lookup for you for $1.00 for the first page, and .25 per copy after that. Go to www.usgenweb.com, choose state pages, then Illinois, then IRAD. They will direct you to the new IRAD website. You can do a search through the databases to see what records the state has online for your relatives. However, I got my great-great grandfather's death certificate from them, and it wasn't listed in the search results. They will look on microfilm for certain records that they keep which may not be listed online. McLean County deaths are kept at Illinois State University. If you read the Illinois state website information, you will find the address and the record types held at each university. Just write to them, and you will have a copy of the death record within a couple of weeks if they have it. If not, McLean County will do a lookup for you for $7.00, if you write to the county clerk. Good luck. Peggy
I am looking for information on Notley Butler in the 1870 Mclean co. Illinois census,Bloomington or Chenoa. He was married to Laura A. Gapen, 9/12/1878. He had two children, Howard Bruce and Mabel Butler. Any information would be helpful. Thanks, Keith D. Butler [email protected]
Faith, I am going to send you what I have gathered thus far on the Cunningham family. Perhaps you will see some clue within the documents that I am missing. I will give the Mathis family another shot when I get back to the library. I did see some references to various Mathews when I was checking, but nothing with any regularity that made me expect a connection to your family. From what I gather from your communications, you are expecting the Mathis spelling to be the more predominant? It does seem unusual that with all of those kids there isn't another researcher but I am in a similar situation with one of my families. Three cousins on one line with a few siblings and none but me on the line that had a whole house full! I'll try to get this out in the mail this week. I'm not certain when I'll get back to the library--at the moment my various children have croupe, tonsillitis, and a fever spiking to 104.3 (sigh). Cara, I would recommend that you contact Evergreen Cemetery (formerly Old City Cemetery). It is a large cemetery that was very active at that time and is still active today. The number is 1-309-827-6950 and they are very helpful. If that doesn't yield the answer you are looking for, contact me back and I can do a cemetery look-up the next time I get to the library (will likely be a few weeks). Your call to the cemetery would be better however, as I have known instances where burials were not included in the cemetery books. It appears that they, too, only go from 1877 to 1900. (Unless I'm missing something.) It was hard for me to search the database, maybe I wasn't doing it right, but when I took a look at their holdings for McLean Co. I only found one database for death records and it went from 1877 to 1900. Maybe I will just have to write the county clerk and hope they can do a manual search for me for the year 1913. I was wondering if anyone knew of an easy (or maybe hard) way to find a death record before 1916 (specifically 1913) that happened in Bloomington, IL. I logged onto the McLean County Clerk's web site and their death records only date Post-1916. The website says that if I want death records Pre-1916, I'm welcome to come in to the courthouse and search their indexes. I see the LDS only has microfilm on "Death index cards, 1878-1899" and "Register of deaths, 1878-1900." I'm wondering how to find a death between the LDS microfilm and county clerk's office dates. Anyone? -- Cara Showers Anchorage, Alaska [email protected] Volunteer of Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness at http://raogk.rootsweb.com
I recently received a free death certificate from the Illinois State Archives. A lot of the information was unreadable. They indicated that it was the best copy they could make. I am thinking of sending for a certified copy. If I do, will it be a better copy? Do they type the information on their current form? Any information will be appreciated. Thank you. Rhonda
Hello, I an searching for death location on James Hancock b 1802 in KY d 10 Jan 1896 in possibly McLean Co., IL. He was married to Rachael Stansbury 13 Jan 1825 in IN. James was listed on the census for McLean Co., for the years 1840, 1850 and 1860. Their daughter Amanda Melissa was married to William F Tovrea. Any information would be helpful. Gladys
Hi, Am new to the list. Am researching a rather complicated family (arent' we all?) Julius Woolcott Humphrey emigrated to the LeRoy IL area about 1870? with his father Nelson and at least one brother Nelson G. Julius was born in Wyoming County NY in 1856. He married a Laura Belle Keenan in Sep 16, 1879 in LeRoy. They had two girls Arlie Orpha b. Aug. 19, 1880 in LeRoy and Eva Bernice b. May 6,1882. They then moved to South Dakota where Lulu Blance was born Apr. 3, 1884 Clark County. Mother Laura died in 1893 there and Julius remairried my GGrandmother Nellie Verelle Hubbard. They went back to McLean County where my grandfather Adon was born in 1896 in Bloomington. Both of his parents died by 1911 and he was raised by a maternal Uncle. My delimma is what happened to the half sisters? They were getting to be adults by the time my Grandfather was born. I was wondering if anyone has info on the Keenan family of LeRoy or any Humphreys. I tried to obtain an obit in S.D. but the local newspaper won't allow viewing of their archives citing they are fragile. Any Help would greatly be appreciated Sharon Eddie

I am hoping to find someone who either has a list of burials in Leroy Cemetery or who lives near that cemetery. I have information that states that one of my 3rd great-granduncles, Daniel Harvey Daugherty, and his wife, Adeline (Pomeroy) Daugherty, are both buried in that cemetery, and that this cemetery is located in McLean county. (I don't know the exact location within the county.) I don't have a death date for either of these Daugherty's and I am hoping their tombstones will offer up this information. I would like to obtain copies of their obituaries, but I can't do that until I have a date of death for them. Any help anyone can give me with this will be GREATLY appreciated:-) I live in the South, and so I can't do this research myself. Sincerely, Jennifer Wathen
