Hello, I am interested in the David and Hattie McCONKEY family who was living in Dorr township, McHenry Co., IL at the time of the 1920 Census. David was born 1875-1876 in Illinois, but his parents were both born in Ireland. David had a son named David Jr. b. 1912-13, living with them at the time of this census, but there may have been other children. If you have any information to share on this McCONKEY line I would be very happy to hear from you. There is a connection to my GREENWOOD line and the McCONKEY's that I would like to explore. I'll be happy to share the information that I have. Karla staudt@cptelco.net
John, one easy source is the 1872 Atlas of McHenry county - available through the McHenry County Genealogical Society. You may find a copy is large city libraries also - I found it and the family farm at the Houston Library. There are more plats available, and others on this list will know where they are. The county deed records, if accessible to you, will give all the details and really aren't that difficult to research - you don't have to be a title attorney. Do you mean the southwest corner of Bard and Haligus? The southeast corner shows about 60 acres owned by L & V. Leikam in the mid 1990s. The County Treasurer and Assessor's office would have this information along with how the property had been subdivided over the years. There is a Rockford outfit (Rockford Map Publishers) that publishes an annual land atlas and plat book that may be in local libraries. Also, a tract search at the County Recorder's office will reveal ownership throughout the years. You could contact one of the local title insurance companies and request an Abstract of Title for the property. This could be a little pricey but thorough. Grafton Township may have some records that may be of assistance. Good luck Jerry Hartnett Crystal Lake, Illinois
Hello, I'm new to this list, and was wondering if anyone knew how I could find out who owned a particular farm (about 150 acres), which is now located on the southeast corner of Haligus Rd. and Bard Rd.(now called Lakewood Rd.)? A friend (an older gentleman) has owned the farm since 1965, and he would like to learn the history of the ownership of the farm, which still supposedly has the original farmhouse and barn. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks so much, John Maurath conlaeth@juno.com ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! I also have some wonderful pictures of the Falk and Johnson family to share. Barb
Nunday or Nunda is the old railroad station and old downtown surrounding the tracks at the current Crystal Lake Train Station. It was originally known as Dearborn and later as North Crystal Lake. It existed as a village between 1855 to 1908. The original downtown of Crystal Lake centered at Route 14 (Northwest Hwy/Virginia Street) and the water tower in front of St. Thomas and 1st Congregational churches. Surnames: MEEHAN, MILLER Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Zg.2ADI/705 Message Board Post: My great great grandfather was William John MEEHAN (sometimes spelled MEHAN), who married approx 1968 to Alice MILLER of Marengo Illinois. They lived in Chicago and had 3 children: Willis James MEEHAN born 1869, James Adelbert MEEHAN born 1871 and Carrie MEEHAN born 1879. Family stories say that William John MEEHAN came from either County Cork or County Clare in Ireland to America at the age of 14 or 16, and was possibly an orphan at the time. There are a few passenger lists showing a William John (or William or John), but we have not been able to prove any one of those is our William John MEEHAN. He is not on the 1870 census with his wife, Alice (she is listed with her parents, George and Elvira MILLER, in Marengo Illiniois, along with her first son, Willis MEEHAN). William John is said to have died a couple of months before Carrie was born meaning late 1878 or early 1879. Therefore, he is not enumerated on the 1880 census with his wife and children. He is not buried in the Marengo Cemetery where Alice and other family members are buried. Also, there are many William MEEHANs and John MEEHANs in Chicago city directories, but, again, we have been unable to prove any of those to be ours. Another family story says he fought in the Civil War, but again, we have been unable to connect any of those Williams or Johns to our family. I'm hoping that someone in this list might have come across some information that might help me in my search for my elusive William John MEEHAN. If you have, please email me at kmw328@aol.com. Thank you.
