I located the info as given above ... and, now, I have a lot of questions! The only "known" NIHENs are in the coal fields of Northeast Pennsylvania (my location). Others, found not only in Illinois but also a few other states and Canada, seem to have no link. A major brickwall is that I cannot determine if my great grandfather, John NIHEN (b. Ireland c. 1843 - d. Summit Hill, PA 1907) had siblings. The hunt goes on! Thanks, Joe Nihen Lansford, PA

We are unsure of any children from Unknown BROWN marriage. Our search would be greatly helped if we could connect the first names of her husbands. I have a surname that is quite rare ... only 13 of us in the US telephone directories, and I'm not related to a few because of name changes! Does anyone have access to the Census for McHenry, 1880, who would be kind enough to do a "look up"? One family is in Seneca on page 14, another is in Hartland on pages 1 and 20, and the third is in Dunham on page 14. I'm not exactly sure what this all means, but it is the information given on the Web. Any help or leads to this surname (dead or alive!) would greatly be appreciated. Many thanks, Joe
I would love to hear from anyone who knows anything about Lars Pierson who bought 120 acres of land in McHenry County in 1843. I have a great grandfather by this name (spelled Pierson, Pearson at different times). He settled in Cook County. In trying to trace him back to Norway, I'd like to know more about this McHenry Lars Pierson. There was a Lars Pierson who came to this country from Stavenger, Norway in 1837 on the Ship Enigheden. Joan in Illinois
Interesting - on the McHenry County 1872 Plat Map there is no town by the name of Riley in Riley Township (or any other township for that matter). In "A Gazetteer of Illinois" by J. M. Peck, reprinted 1993, there is no town of Riley. There may have been a Post Office, but that didn't make a town. There definitely was a township by the name of Riley which is not a town or city. Is there someone in Crystal Lake who would be willing to go the the Crystal Lake Library and look up the Riley surname in the St. Patrick's Church Index, Hartland 1853-1868 for me? I understand there are copies of Baptism, marriage and a brides and mothers index. I was told that the church records had burned and I just learned recently that the library had these records. I do not live in IL and would appreciate any help. Thanks. Linda Whalen

All of the cemeteries in McHenry County have been indexed. I looked in Vol. II, Southwest Townships and did not find your Ezra, Sr. Did find your Ezra, Jr. Most of the cemetery organizations were extremely helpful in allowing our members to access their records to use along with the information found on the stones. Ezra, Sr. could have been buried in Garden Prairie which is right on the McHenry/Boone County line. Many Marengo citizens were buried there. I hope this helps. Ann L.
