Dear Listmembers, The old German newspaper "Ostfriesische Nachrichten" was published by Pastor L. Hündling [Huendling} in 1882 in Iowa as a connecting paper between the people in the new American settlements and die old homeland with news and events in Ostfriesland and the "New World". Later you could find this newspaper all over the U.S. and Ostfriesland. For the period between 1882 and 1915 the issues were microfilmed around 20 - 30 years ago. According to a descendant of Pastor Huendling about 10 years ago, most of the issues between 1916 and 1971 got lost on the way to a processing center to be microfilmed. Besides Rev. Kenneth DeWall and others, who published in the past some indexes of (only) obituaries, we started in 1997 reading each newspaper for 1882 - 1915 and 1916 - 1971 (single issues) from the front to the back and taking all of the personal data in obituaries and local news into computer files. We added also interesting stories about the events in the New World - especially for the German readers -. So far we have listed 10,300 names of deceased between 1882 and 1915 plus 12,300 names of relatives, and until 1971 only 2,000 deceased / 5,000 relatives. Now we are looking for issues of this newspaper between 1916 and 1971. The undersigned would appreciate your answer if you have access to those issues. We have the microfilms from Crest Information Technologies and Heritage Crest, both in Cedar Rapids, IA. Most of the single issues after 1916 are scattered all over the U.S. and Germany. We guess, maybe finding them in the attics, etc. of old East Frisian settlements in the States. Thank you very much in advance for your help in preserving the data. Sincerely, Hans-Georg Boyken Ostfriesland-Society of Iowa, Inc.

My ggrandfather is Freidrich Freund born in Neunkirch, Germany about 1820. In 1844 he married Anna Hartman in Prussia and that same year they sailed to Philadelphia USA, and naturalized in 1847. My problem is figuring our which Nuenkirch Friedrich Freund was born in. I thought perhaps in the Lake Constance area but can't come up with anything. What do you think?

They had seven known children; Margaret married Enos Conley John married [--?--] Anna married Henry Schmid Hannah married T. Reilly William married [--?--] Michael born 18 Nov 1890 married Esther Spoerlein Joseph born 24 Apr 1893 marriedEdith Dittrich No additional information about the children is known at this time. Here is what I believe to be correct about George as per a Minnesota Death Certificate: born circa June 1858 and died on 18 August 1915 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Olmstead County, Minnesota. He was buried in Woodstock, McHenry County, Illinois shortly afterward. George's parents are given as George Weidner and Eva Nickol, both born in Germany. The informant was a Mr. J. G. Weidner of Prarie View, possibly George's brother. After his death, Hannah remained on the family farm. This family is part of the Weidner family of Buffalo Grove, Lake County, Illinois. If you have additional information such as more dates, places or marriage information, I would greatly appreciate having the same. I do know for certain that Jacob ( my 3x gr grandfather, his daughter Gertrude Schmitt Schaefer was my 2x gr grandmother ) was Frederichs brother. They were the sons of Michael Schmitt and Catherina Bell. Frederich and Anna Schaefer had a son John who married Maria Schmitt 25 Oct 1853, they had a son Stephen b. 1856, d. 1927, who married a Catherine Freund. I'm not sure how your Schmitt's relate, it would take some time to research this being that there were so many families with this surname not to mention they all repeated given names when their children were born, I will check back into my family papers to see if I can locate a connection for you. I notice your surname is Adams, which is one of many common surnames in the area :) My 2x gr grandparents Michael and Katherine ( Pitzen ) Schaeffer had a son Mathias J who married a Rose Adams,( d. 18 Feb 1985 ) would she by chance be in your family somewhere ? Also, My 3x gr grandparents John Baptist and Anna (Wagner) Jung had a daughter Mary Katherine who married a Martin Adams, b. 14 Sep 1848, d. 22 July 1900 . I am just beginning my research into these families. I have an Adams family book compiled by an A. Adams from Ingleside, Lake Co, IL back in the 1980's, do you think there may be family info in here relating to your Adam's family ?
I posted a note about this time last evening and by late afternoon I had a response with the obituary I was looking for. Thank you for your generous act of kindness. McHenry County must have very nice people living there! Gayle in Kansas

Yes, it appears as if we are talking about the same Stiegs. Here is a little of what I have: Carl Winkelman (1865-1947) married Emilia Stieg (1869-1943). Their children were: Carl, Walter, Edward, Clara, Evelyn, and Melvin. I think there may have been other siblings, too. Does this match what you have? I would be interested in seeing what you have on this family. I will send you more of what I have if you'd like. If you let me know your e-mail, I can send it that way, rather than on this board. Thank again! Jill

I think I have a picture of the Stieg siblings after all of them arrived in America (around 1890ish?). Let me know if these lines coincide with yours and if you would like to trade info. Jody

Her mother, my GGGrandmother, was Gertud Adams (born Gertrud Schmitt) in Kaifenheim, Germany. I note that there appear to be two Stephan Schmitt's in the St. John records. Kaifenheim is only a short distance (~5 miles SE) from Hirten. Gertrud Adams was married to Nicholas Adams (my GGGF) who was _not_ apparently related to the man of the same name who was a Johnsburg founder. My GGGrandparents lived in Lake County near Volo. I'm trying to figure out if there is a connection between my family and any Schmitts that lived near Johnsburg.
