Sam=92s dad had a brother in law named David Miller, buried in Cary, Mchenry co IL. I never could find anything on David so I quit. There were a lot of Millers back there. He appears in the 1880 census in Sharon, Walworth County, Wi with his grown children, Peter and Catherine Carroll. He may have died around 1890, but I can find no record of his burial in Wisconsin. Perhaps he came back across the border and is buried in this county? Also I don't know his whereabouts prior to 1880, so perhaps he lived in this county before moving across the border to Sharon. He was a Catholic and may be buried in a Catholic cemetery. Thanks for any help.

    3. Probate for McHenry County is found in the Circuit Court's Office, not County Clerk (here you would find birth, marriage and death). I don't suppose many poor folks did back then. But there was a dispute between two of her sons on the disposition of her remaining property. The McHenry Co. Probate Court appointed an administrator and took an inventory of her property which amounted to $54 worth of personal property (the most valuable of which was a cow worth $30), $146 in cash held by one son and a promisary note for $100 from one Michael Sweeney (for what I don't know). I can't remember for sure, but I think I got these probate records thru the County Clerk in Woodstock. Ann L. I have a hard time visualizing how people travelled across the country in those days, especially those with little or no money. I am new to this and have the luxury of picking up after some great work of other relatives. Can I ask how you obtained a copy of your g-g-grandmother's will? Was everyone required to file one? I have a 99 1/2 great aunt that remembers some of the talk of the pioneers when she was young. There were some that were still alive into the 1920's in the group. She said that they all couldn't believe how hard it was. They said this even after a rather affluent period of farming!

There were a lot of Irish immigrants that made their way to McHenry County after landing in NY. My g-grandfather arrived in Marengo in 1851.Towns such as Marengo, Belvidere and Woodstock had many Irish. I gather they arrived with little more than the clothes on their backs. They worked as laborers and eventually farmers as I believe at one point the government gave land to those that would farm it. Some went on to hoped for greener pastures in Missouri, Iowa and Montana and elsewhere West. How they moved and lived is not something that I have found to be very well documented. My g-g-grandmother died in Woodstock in 1878 and I have a copy of the estate she left behind and it was pitiful. One cow, a few dresses, a bed, a few chairs, a table, some dishes, a bonnet and not much else. We probably can't imagine how difficult life was for our Irish ancestors back then. I'll guess that initially they stayed with ! family or friends they knew from Ireland.
