    2. Dear Citizens of Paducah and Metropolis: My brother and I just returned from a trip to your cities. We came to do some family tree research. We stayed nearly a week, and visited the genealogy sections of both libraries. We haunted lots of cemeteries in your area. We visited Joppa, Round Knob, Brookport, and Lone Oak. We also traveled to Paris, TN, and Anna, IL. Special thanks to Linda Dunlop at Henry County, TN, Genealogical Society. We didn't get to meet her, but she did research for us before our trip. Thanks to the volunteers there as well. A debt of gratitude also to the security staff at Choate (formerly Anna State Hospital) who took the time to walk off the old cemetery to help us locate the burial spots of two of our ancestors. We were both delighted with the kindness and warmth of those we came in contact with. So many people went above and beyond the call of duty to help us and make us feel welcome. This was a subject of discussion several times in our travels. We met with several people related to our family lines. We are researching Holliday/Halliday and related lines in Massac County, IL, and Simmons in McCracken and Graves Counties, KY. (Not related to Don Simmons' line, we heard his name several times, but unfortunately didn't get the chance to meet him.) Ann Laird at Massac County Gen. Society spent hours digging through the vaults of Massac County Courthouse basement. We thank her profusely. Vera Rodgers generously shared her information with us, and even trusted us to copy, and return her information. We met Larry De Journett at the Special Collections section of the library at Paducah. We have communicated by e-mail. His wife has a connection to our Simmons line. He brought along their aunt, Mary Waltman, who remembers some of our ancestors. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Metropolis, IL. The staff there came to feel like friends. Thanks to each and every one of you. The staff at cemeteries, the waitresses, all the people who made our stay pleasant and memorable. Donna Holliday Sena, Chico CA Dennis Holliday, Denver, CO

    2. John, The Summers cemetery in on private land in Hillerman, close to a pipeline??, I know that Raleigh Summers, Sr and a few of the Summers are buried there, But I just found out this week, One of the ancestor married into a "House" family. On Raleigh's death record it shows that he is buried in the House cemetery, I took that as been buried at home, but is there a House cemetery listed. Thanks Wilma

    2. Wilma, The information on your BLACK ancestors comes from the "Massac County, Illinois Cemeteries", Volume 5 on page 108. The following listing is for burial at The Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery but there are no tombstones there for the following burials. This information comes from the county death records. The names in parenthesis are the maiden names of the mother. BLACK, Isabelle 22 Jul 1855 - 27 Sep 1919 d/o Jack Anderson & Daroline (Gattin). BLACK, Infant 14 Mar 1918 Stillborn d/o Simon & Bertha (Myer). BLACK, Loren Edward 22 Mar 1934 s/o Simon & Bertha. BLACK, Oscar Laverne 29 Mar 1926 - 21 Jan 1929 s/o Simon & Bertha (Meyer). I have no listing for the Summers Cemetery nor is it listed in any of the 6 volumes of the Massac County, Illinois Cemeteries. Hope this much helps you. Good luck. John W. Pegg

I am trying to find a connection on a Benjamin Franklin Burnett who was married to a 1st--Manerva J Perry on 10-25-1864 in Massac and 2nd--to Rebecca Black on 7-26-1874 in Massac, and 3rd ( my line ) to Margaret Elizabeth Oliver on 8-21-1881 in Massac. I have Benjamin's death as of November 24, 1909 and with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery and Margaret Elizabeth is buried there also along with some of their children, I am needing to find out what part of Tennessee Benjamin is from and also his parents whom I have as Atchael Burnett and Nancy Kuykendall. I am hoping that the connection to Perry and Black will lead me to path of Benjamin's parents for I am having a hard time finding out through Margaret's path. 1. [ILMASSAC] Please, I Need Cemetery Help
    2. I need more information about the Buzzards Roost Cemetery in Massac County. It is also known as Old Hall Cemetery and Mt. Olive Cemetery. The Massac County, Illinois Cemeteries Volume 2 gives the location but I need more details since I live in Indiana. I want to visit the cemetery very soon so I would appreciate a timely reply. The cemetery book says from intersection of Hy 825N & 1900E, go 4/10 mile east on Hy 825N. Then go up dirt road and it is on the left. Where is highway 825N &1900E? I know the courthouse square in Metropolis, so which way do I go from there? Please try to make the directions as easy as possible. Is the cemetery on private property? Am I allowed access to the cemetery? Do I have to get permission to enter the cemetery first? Where do I pick up the dirt road at? About how far from Metropolis is the cemetery located? Has anyone been to this cemetery other than the two researchers that performed the transcribing of the cemetery? What is the condition of the cemetery? Are there any dangers going into this cemetery such as snakes? My ancestors, John H. STUCKER and his wife, Elizabeth M. STUCKER are buried there. I assume there are tombstones for both of them. The book did not say otherwise. Does anyone recall that has been there seen the markers for John H. and Elizabeth M. STUCKER? Is there a county highway map available that I could buy that would show the cemetery locations and the highway numbers such as 825N and 1900E? Would the County Highway Dept. or the Chamber of Commerce have such a map available for sale? Please let me know. I will look forward to hearing from anyone very soon. Thank you for your cooperation. 3. I just wanted to let you know someone did get your message. When do you plan on coming to Metropolis? If you can give me a week I will try to get all of your questions answered. I do know one of the researchers but unfortunately the other one has since died. I'll get you a map of Metropolis and simple directions (simple is all I know how to give) <grin> I am last years President of the Massac County Genealogical Society and the Secretary/Treasurer this year. My name is Deena Harris, and I'm always glad to be able to help a Society member from out of this area.
