    3. GLAD TO HELP--SO FAR MOST QUESTIONS AREN'T HARD TO ANSWER--I'VE BEEN LUCKY!!! THE MASSAC CO. HISTORICAL SOC. HERE HAS A FEW COPIES OF THEIR 1ST HISTORY BOOK FOR SALE. IT BRIEFLY TOUCHES THE SUBJECT OF INDIANS WHO LIVED HERE. GEORGE W. MAY HAS TWO BOOKS THAT ALSO TELL SOME OF THE HISTORY OF THE LAND IN MASSAC CO. THE IL. SEC. OF STATE WILL MAIL YOU FREE THE "ORGIN AND EVOLUTION OF IL COUNTIES" AND "IL COUNTIES & INCORPORATED MUNICIPALITIES"--BOTH ARE VERY HANDY BOOKLETS FOR FINDING DATES OF COUNTY FORMATIONS. THE 1ST BOOKLET INCLUDES MAPS AS EACH COUNTY WAS FORMED. THEY WILL ALSO MAIL YOU FREE THE "ILLINOIS 2000 BLUEBOOK"--MOSTLY POLITICAL INFORMATION, BUT HAS A HISTORY SECTION. 592 PAGES, INDEXED AND HARDBOUND. YOU CAN ALSO READ IT ON THEIR WEBSITE. THE "HISTORY OF MASSAC CO. BY O.J. PAGE" IS SOLD OUT BY THE MCGS, BUT CAN BE PURCHASED BY HIGGERSON BOOKS (THEIR VERSION ISN'T INDEXED). THIS GIVES SOME INFORMATION ABOUT FT. MASSAC AND MASSAC CO. WHEN THE COUNTY WAS FORMED. THE "HISTORY OF JOHNSON CO" BY MRS. P.T. CHAPMAN IS FOR SALE BY THE JCHGS; INDEX IS FOR SALE BY SANDS GENEALOGISTS. THIS MENTIONS A STORE AT FT. MASSAC AND GIVES SOME HISTORY FOR OTHER AREAS IN SO. ILLINOIS. I CAN'T THINK OF ANYTHING CURRENTLY FOR SALE ON POPE CO. HISTORY. I'LL LOOK AT WHAT I HAVE AND SEE IF ANY OF IT IS STILL FOR SALE. I'LL MAIL YOU THE FLYERS/INFORMATION FOR THE OTHERS. I'LL CHECK TO SEE IF A SET OF THE "DRAPER COLLECTION OF MANUSCRIPTS" FILM IS IN YOUR AREA. THIS WILL HAVE SOME VERY EARLY FT. MASSAC MATERIAL IN IT. LATER, ANN ----- Original Message ----- From: Linda MacReynolds <FlyLinda@webtv.net> To: <ILMASSAC-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 28, 2000 8:37 PM Subject: Re: [ILMASSAC] Fort Massack > Hi Ann > Enjoyed readingf what you wrote about Massac, Pope and Johnson Co. 3. Not confused at all, you explained it very well. Thanks so much. You see, I found the only Weaver listed in IL tax records in 1810 in Fort Massack. Since my Lewis was born 1816, in IL and probably lived his whole life in southern IL I am trying to prove that John Weaver was the father of Lewis. Funny thing is Lewis' father was born in KY. There was a John Weaver who skipped out on his taxes in Campbell Co., KY (on the Ohio river). Says he "gon to Orleens". Very posible he could have stopped at Fort Massack. I don't know what type of post they had there in 1805. That's why I want to make sure I know what county to look in for the time period 1805 - 1816. Thanks again. -----Original Message----- From: John Laird [mailto:l346@midwest.net] Sent: Tuesday, June 27, 2000 9:42 PM To: ILMASSAC-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ILMASSAC] Fort Massack No, we don't have a Massac or Fort Massac township. There are some old maps and records in those indexes relating to Ft. Massac in the late 1700's and early 1800's. The precincts that Ft. Massac border now are Metropolis precinct and Brooklyn precinct. It is state owned now. Totally confused yet????? 3. I am not positive, but I don't think there was a Fort Massack township since Massac County was formed in 1843. Yes, Massac Co was formed from Johnson and Pope counties at that time. Illinois did not become a state till 1818. And you can find a listing for Fort Massaic District in records of the Indiana Territory where it list those residing in that District. Also, in 1809 when the last change in counties was made before your mentioned date of 1810, there were 2 counties for Illinois Territory and they were St. Clair County which was from mid-southern Illinois to the north and Randolph County which included all of southern Illinois. In 1812, the county lines were changed again and several counties added. At that time what is now Massac County was completely included in what was then Johnson County. The same for the changes made in 1813 and 1815. But in 1816, what is now Massac County was divided in half into Johnson and Pope Counties. This line held true till Massac County was formed from Johnson and Pope in 1843. I took this info from the free handout from the office of Illinois Secretary of State called "Origin and Evolution and Illinois Counties". This is a good little book that explains the forming of the Illinois counties in detail. I hope I have gotten the info correct here with the dates.
