I will be travelling to Massac and Pope counties this summer/fall for a research trip and wondered if anyone can make some suggstions to better my research time. Any particularly good libraries/genealogical collections (do they have their catalog on-line so I can be prepared before I go), what about visiting the courthouse (location, hours). I have done the census work and gone through every Massac county book at the genealogical libraries here, but would also like to do probate, deed, more cemetery work, etc. My PRYOR, RISINGER, and ROBERTS families were in Massac and Pope from about 1820 to well after 1920. Any other suggestions on hotels, eating places, etc., would be greatly appreciated. Barb
Isaac N. GILL age 27; his wife Ann age 19 and a son Henry age 11/12 were living in Metropolis Twp in Massac Co IL at the time of the 1860 census. In 1870 Isaac and his son were living in Yolo Co CA. Ann wasn't with them. Isaac's occupation was listed as a Hotel Keeper and the two were in Washington Twp of Yolo County. Where was Ann? Was she still in Illinois? Had she died? I believe her maiden name was McDOUGAL. Any help will be appreciated; thanks. Karen Venable

I would like to contact anyone doing research on the OWENS families of Massac Co., IL between about 1865 to 1940's and later. My OWENS line was in Massac Co., around Unionville, and the Metropolis area. Ancestors included: Levi and Martha J. OWENS, and their children: James J. OWENS, Samuel Thomas OWENS, Sarah OWENS who married a DEAN, and Blitha L. OWENS who married Mary Jane WETHERINGTON. My grandfather, Earl R. OWENS, along with Ernest OWENS, and Artie G. OWENS (NEFTZGER), were children of Blithey L. and Mary Jane OWENS. Thanks for any help. Regina OWENS Rice Bonita Springs, FL
searching for info. on Julia Castleman, moved to Metroplis in the 1920's, after her husband John (d) in Marion Ill. she had a son Earnest living at Metroplis, he (d) 1924. She may have remarried, would like to know when she died , where she is buried ? Thanks Judy
In Massac County there is a marriage record for Isaac N. GILL and Ann E. McDOUGAL; the marriage took place 5 Oct 1856. An index for the 1860 Massac Co IL census shows a listing for Isaac N. GILL living in Metropolis Twp. page #950. I'd like the detail for the household members and if anyone has additional information about this couple, I'd appreciate receiving it. Thanks so much. Marilyn, This is in response to a message that you posted on the Massac Co., IL, rootsweb messages just the other day. The CHASTAIN "daughter that married a Mr. GOLDEN", was my great great grandmother, Mary Frances CHASTAIN. She married Hickman GOLDEN, son of Shadrack GOLDEN of AL. I will dig through my notes and find where I have information on her parents. Regina
Looking for any information on the Chastain family who was in Massac County from 1860 onwards. William Chastain was the the father of John, Joseph, Calvin, George, and a daughter who married Mr.Golden. William Chastain died in Massac County in the 1870's and I know that he is buried in the I00F Cemetery, but can't locate it or his grave inscriptin. His wife Margaret died in Livingston Co., Kentucky around 1872, but don't know of a grave for her.. Can anyone help me out here? Sure would appreciate any words on this.
Going through some of my obituaries, and I found in my g-grandfathers obit the reference that Rev. James T. Bryant officiated at his funeral, but I have no idea what church that was affiliated with. Hopefully someone will know the answer. Thanks, Debbie

Dear Listers, I am attempting to locate some confirmation of the first marriage of Frederike Riepe. My ggGrandfather Henry Shappard (Johann Heinrich Schabbehard) had a sister born Fredericke (b.1851in Germany) who later shows up on an 1883 marriage record to John C.Ellerbrook. It lists this as her second marriage. She also shows up as a god parent on one of her sister Annie's children's christening records at St. Stephens as Fredericke Reipe. I would like to know if someone has knowledge of the connection. Thanks! Phil Shappard Winfield, IL
