    3. Dear County List, We have now entered pages for about 80 counties in Illinois, as links to the Homepage on our website, which may be of some help to researchers who have ancestors who were members of the Primitive Baptist church in Illinois. The information regarding the members names comes from a database in our library computer which is not on-line, but the surnames serve as an index to it, to help researchers determine if they may have connections in some of our churches. The database has been (and is still being added to) compiled from original source documents, including church and association records, and obituaries - many of which are found in our shelves of bound church periodicals. To see our website, go to our homepage: http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/churches/primbap/pbl.html or go directly to the Family History Assistance page at: http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/churches/primbap/FamHist.html Sincerely, Robert L. 1. "The first memorial service in Illinois, and perhaps the first in the country . . . April 29, 1866"
    2. Karima
    3. Good Afternoon, "The first memorial service in Illinois, and perhaps the first in the country, to honor those who had died in the Civil War, took place at Woodlawn Cemetery [Carbondale, Jackson Co, IL] on April 29, 1866. Woodlawn was Carbondale's only cemetery at that time. There are records of over twenty Civil War dead being buried in Woodlawn Cemetery during the war years, and there were probably more, for some of whom the records did not survive. Besides the men from Carbondale who were returned home for burial, many other servicemen, men who had been sent to Carbondale for treatment when the hospitals further south were overcrowded and who died at Carbondale, were also buried in Woodlawn. Counting those who had Civil War service and who died in later years there are over sixty men who served in that war buried in this cemetery." ~ "A History of Early Carbondale, Illinois, 1852-1905," by John W. D. Wright. John W. D. Wright, was my 1st cousin, 3 times removed, and a good and wonderful friend. An avid genealogist who produced many publications for the Jackson County Historical Society. The entire chapter of the above description of the first Memorial Service held in Illinois can be read at the following URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~illinois/MemorialDayCarbondale.html. 3. Sent: Tuesday, May 22, 2001 5:48 AM Subject: Fwd: NCGASTON-D Digest V01 #4 Please forward on to others. This was in Tues, 8 May, Springfield MO News Leader, p. 5B: Discovery of cemetery halts roadwork--Associated Press-Kansas City-- Construction of a new highway in south Kansas City has been halted by the discovery of a small cemetery dating back to the Civil War era. State officials are anxious to find any descendants of the Holloway family who are buried in the cemetery. If the heirs can't be found, the state will have to get court permission to move the nine graves in the plot, in order to finish a new Missouri 150. Construction workers recently unearthed a marble headstone, dating from 1858, while moving a large section of water pipe. Archaeologists later found another headstone and evidence of seven other graves. The site has not been disturbed further. Please pass this on to other lists.

    1. Look-up request~
    2. Marilyn Dawson
    3. I wonder if someone could please do a look up for my William Chastain in 1870 Massac County, Illinois? He should be there with wife Margaret and sons Joseph, Calvin, George, and maybe daughter Lavinia. Joseph, as well as his brothers, are married by 1880 Census and are living in Pope County, IL. I went to our library here to look it up and found that we don't have the 1870 Illinois Index or Census for that year. I would sure appreciate this if someone could help me. William died sometime after his wife died in early 1870's, but they were suppossed to be living there, or in Pope County in 1870. They are not in KY in 1870. I checked that one out. William is buried in Oddfellows Cemetery there in Massac County. Some of you were so kind to help me find that one. Thanks again!

    3. I was wondering if someone with the IOOF Cemetery listings could please look up William Chastain buried in IOOF Cemetery in either Massac County, IL or Pope Co., IL around 1875-85? I had heard from a lady who helped me out, that William Chastain was listed as buried in the IOOF Cemetery, but the name of the Cemetery and the exact location of the grave was not given. I would be so grateful if someone could find this for me. Thanks, Marilyn

    1. Census Searches at the Illinois State Archives
    2. Karima
    3. Good Evening, I would like to once again remind anyone who may not already be aware of the availability of census searches through the Illinois State Archives. If you have the name (preferably the head of household) and the county in which you know or believe him/her to have lived, you can request a search (actually two searches at a time) of the census archives. http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/serv_sta.html If the researchers at the Archives can find a record for the family, they will mail you a photocopy of the actual page on which the entry is found. It will include information on all of the individuals who were living in the household at the time the census(s) was taken. Uncertified photocopies of requested records are available at NO charge (there is some confusion among the genealogy community regarding this, but I can assure you that at this time there is no charge) - also don't bother to send a SASE, they will just return it to you). You can request copies of documents by mail, by fax, by telephone, or by personal visit. You can write/phone/fax your request to the following: Illinois State Archives Reference Unit Margaret Cross Norton Building Capitol Complex Springfield, IL 62756 Telephone: (217) 782-3556 Fax: (217) 524-3930 OR, to make it really easy, you can visit the following URL and complete the request form you will find there. http://www.sos.state.il.us/cgi-bin/archives/arcreq.s Some things to keep in mind when making requests are listed below. Request no more than two specific names or items per mailing. For name searches try to provide (if you have it, but if you don't have all of it don't let that stop you from making your request): 1) the individual's complete name, age, and birthplace, 2) county and township names, and 3) the year of the census(s) to be searched. Wait for a response to one request before submitting another one. The following is the main web page for the Archives, you might want to check it out to see what else is available: http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/archives.html Hope this helps, Karima List Administrator of: Illinois Roots Discussion List (ILROOTS-L) http://userweb.springnet1.com/quest/Illinoismailinglist.htm Southern Illinois Discussion List (SOIL-L) http://userweb.springnet1.com/quest/SOIL.htm J a c k s o n County, Illinois Discussion List (ILJACKSO-L) http://userweb.springnet1.com/quest/JacksonCoWelcome.htm
