    1. Re: ILMASSAC-D Digest V02 #9
    2. That's an excellent idea!! I wish I lived in the area so I could work on it. I live in Terre Haute, IN and we have several groups like that here. If someone discovers an untended cemetery, it usually ends up on the news and in the paper until something is done, usually by volunteers or neighbors. One day we too will be in the ground, I hope someone is kind enough to take care of my final resting place. Have a great day!! Missy :) My family tree is full of nuts!!! Maternal Surnames: Cowger, Larimer, Harvey, Stebbins, Birt, Tennerey, Chew, Eye, Buckles, Hawkes, Wilson, Dicks, Green, Frary, Hibbert, Carter, Dickerson. Paternal Surnames: Davenport, Canada/Kennedy, Champion, Bray, Thrift, McMican, Carter, Vaughn, Thurman, Carrick, Lee, Foster, Kelly, McGrew, Wells, Coleman, Melton, Dunning, Threlkeld, Hardin, Rice. Husbands Surnames: Rose, Stephens, Shimpf, Petty, McQue.

    1. Miller Cemetery (Johnson County)
    2. Rebel Kreklow
    3. Miller Cemetery is an overgrown one acre cemetery located atop a hill on a private farm, in a grove of trees due west of Belknap, Lower Cache Township, Johnson County, Illinois. The cemetery's headstones have sunk into the ground, been displaced by growing trees, and/or pushed over by grazing cattle. Several of the tombstones belong to Civil War veterans. > > On 15 August 1853, Fountain Miller deeded a one acre "burying ground" to Johnson County for use as a public burying ground forever. I believe that the Miller Cemetery was the primary cemetery for the surrounding area, until establishment of the Belknap Masonic Cemetery in 1906. It is believed the last burial in the Miller Cemetery took place in the 1950s. Cemetery transcriptions by JCGHS members and also by a commercial cemetery book publisher for Johnson County, indicated approximately 50 individuals were buried in the Miller Cemetery. However, I have (to date) extended the list to 111 individuals through a review of the Johnson County Death Records from 1878 through 1933. I believe that more names will be discovered by additional review of the Johnson County Death Records. > > A number of my Huckleberry ancestors and relatives are buried in the Miller Cemetery, and whenever I visit Johnson County (I live in the San Diego area) I try to visit the cemetery, poke around in the underbrush and place my great-grandmother's headstone back in its proper position. Age and arthritis makes this task a little harder with each visit and I am not sure how much longer I will be able to push that large headstone back up on its pedestal. > > A review of Illinois state laws indicates the responsibility for the oversight of cemetery protection laws rests with the Illinois State Comptroller's office. Information on cemetery protection and preservation laws in the State of Illinois can be found at the following web site: > > http://www.savinggraves.com/usa/il/ > > I contacted the Illinois State Comptroller's Office a year ago in order to determine who was responsible for the upkeep of the Miller Cemetery. A month ago I was contacted by the State of Illinois, and was told that it appears the Miller Cemetery still belonged to Johnson County (even though the County didn't seem to know they owned the land), and that the State Attorney's Office in Vienna had been contacted and directed to determine what action would be taken regarding maintenance of the cemetery. I contacted a Brian Trambley (sp?)in the State Attorney's Office in Vienna, and was told that he had contacted Johnson County Commissioner Max Ray, who had indicated that the County would probably fence the cemetery and cut the grass twice a year. > > Since I don't live in the area, I would appreciate it very much if members of this list who live in the area and have ancestors or relatives in the Miller Cemetery would periodically check with the County Commissioner's Office to ensure that some action is taken regarding the maintenance of the Miller Cemetery. Additionally, some thought should be given to the establishment of a Miller Cemetery Association to oversee the welfare of the cemetery. As to cleaning up the cemetery after it is fenced, this might make a good Eagle Scout Project, or perhaps Johnson County could clean up the cemetery using inmates from the local prison. > > The following is a listing of persons known (either from headstones or death records) to be buried in Miller Cemetery: > > ADKINS, A. 2. Phil Shappard
    3. I have had some requests for information about a resource book I mentioned a couple of days ago. I visited the Wheaton, Illinois Public Library this afternoon and here is the information: The Biographical Review of Johnson, Massac, Pope and Hardin Counties, Illlinois subtitled: Containing Biographical Sketches of Prominent and Representative Citizens It was originally published by the Chicago Biographical Publishing Company 1893 but the 650 page hard bound copy I looked at was a reproduction of the original reprinted by Cook and McDowell Publications, 700 Griffin, Hartford, Kentucky 42347. The phone number is listed as 502-298-7772. I hope this helps. 2. Phil Shappard
    3. I recently found a mention of my ggGrandfather Henry Shappard's half sister Caroline Obermark born in January 1859 to F.W.Obermark and Hanne Wilhelmine Schabbehard Obermark. My late uncle Howard Shappard of Metropolis said a daughter named "Carrie" was born to them after their 1854 marriage. I found here name listed in the confirmations of St. Stephen's Church at Midway and just this week found her in an 1893 book of biographical sketches of people from Pope, Massac and surrounding counties. The book shows her as the second wife of James Story of Brooklyn. It also says they had a child named William Clifford. I checked the 1900 census and found them there. Does anyone have any information on this family or descendants??? Thank you! 1. Rondeau - Pryor Attn: Barb Diehl
    2. Barb, I would like to discuss your family ties to the Rondeau's and ask you about your Joseph Everett Pryor. My family may connect somewhere. I am a descendent of the KING's of the area (Massac, Pope counties in IL and Livingston Co., KY). Everitt was a name used in one of my King family uncles. We have never known where the name came from. I am also a descendent of the BERRY line, probably the Berry's that had the Berry's Ferry, but again can not make the connection. My GGgrandmother was Matilda Ann Berry King, wife of James Henry KING. Matilda died Nov 1881 in Bay City, Jackson Precinct, Massac Co., IL. She is buried at Farmer's Hall cemetery, Massac Co., IL. One of James and Matilda's son's (according to family hearsay), Jeff King, was a commercial fisherman, lived in a houseboat, and may have lived on the island you are seeking info on. If you are interested in comparing info, please email me at BrightStarRN1@aol.com. Deb Kirsch
