    3. This was in Tues, 8 May, Springfield MO News Leader, p. 5B: Discovery of cemetery halts roadwork--Associated Press-Kansas City-- Construction of a new highway in south Kansas City has been halted by the discovery of a small cemetery dating back to the Civil War era. State officials are anxious to find any descendants of the Holloway family who are bured in the cemetery. If the heirs can't be found, the state will have to get court permission to move the nine graves in the plot, in order to finish a new Missouri 150. Construction workers recently unearthed a marble headstone, dating from 1858, while moving a large section of water pipe. Archaeologists later found another headstone and evidence of seven other graves. The site has not been disturbed further. -------- Please pass this on to other lists. Betty White Santa Barbara, CA

    1. death date
    2. Joan Lund
    3. I just saw your question on the Mason Co. news list. I haven't been reading it due to other commitments. I would suggest either of two ways to find the information since you don't have an actual death date. Most deaths for central Illinois are listed in the Illinois-State Journal Register in Springfield. While they do have a database on line http://www.sj-r.com/?clkd=iwm it doesn't cover the time period you want (ca 1950) You should call the Sangamon Valley Room at the Lincoln Library in Springfield, http://lincolnlibrary.rpls.lib.il.us/llhome5.htm and request that they check in the index for an obituary in Illinois State-Journal Register card index. This is were I head before going to the Illinois State Historical Library's newspaper library. You can then order a copy of the obituary from them. http://www.state.il.us/hpa/lib/default.htm#Newspapers ------------------ Joan Black Lund My passion is Genealogy. http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~j-lund Webmaster for: http://www.tbox.com/ccgs http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~joanlund/ http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/IL/Champaign/index.html

    3. I just couldn't help sharing this poem. I hope you all enjoy it. GRANDMA AND THE FAMILY TREE: There's been a change in Grandma; we've noticed her of late, She's always reading history or jotting down some date. She's tracking back the family; we'll all have pedigrees. Oh, Grandma's got a hobby; she's climbing Family Trees. Poor Grandpa does the cooking now, or so he states, That worst of all, he has to wash the cups and dinner plates. Grandma can't be bothered; she's busy as a bee Compiling genealogy -- for the Family Tree. She has no time to baby-sit; the curtains are a fright, No buttons left on Granddad's shirt, the flowerbed's a sight. She's given up her club work, the serials on TV, The only thing she does nowadays is climb the Family Tree. She goes down to the court house and studies ancient lore, We know more about our forebears than we ever knew before. The books are old and dusty; they make poor Grandma sneeze, A minor irritation when you're climbing Family Trees. The mail is all for Grandma, it comes from near and far, Last week she got the proof she needs to join the DAR. A worth while avocation, to that we all agree, A monumental project, to climb the Family Tree. Now some folks came from Scotland and some from Galway Bay, Some were French as pastry, some German, all the way. Some went on west to stake their claim, some stayed near by the sea. Grandma hopes to find them all as she climbs the Family Tree. She wanders through the graveyard in search of date or name, The rich, the poor, the in-between, all sleeping there the same. She pauses now and then to rest, fanned by a gentle breeze That blows above the Fathers of all our Family Trees. There were pioneers and patriots mixed in our kith and kin Who blazed the paths of wilderness and fought through thick and . thin, But none more staunch than Grandma, whose eyes light up with glee Each time she finds a missing branch for the Family Tree. Their skills were wide and varied, from carpenter to cook And one (Alas!) the record shows was hopelessly a crook. Blacksmith, weaver, farmer, judge, some tutored for a fee, Long lost in time, now all recorded on the Family Tree. To some it's just a hobby; to Grandma it's much more, She knows the joys and heartaches of those who went before. They loved, they lost, they laughed, and they wept, and now lay forever still, But they will not, be forgotten as long, as Grandma climbs the family tree. Posted on: Mason County, IL, Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Mason/10118 Surname: Daugherty, Hayworth, Ralston, Pepper, Logan ------------------------- I am seeking information on William Daugherty, b.abt 1798 in Virginia. He married HarrietBeddows/Bidows, b. abt 1807 in Virginia. They had six children born in Virginia: William H., b. abt 1830, married Martha Pepper; Emily L., b. abt 1832, married Epharam Ralston; Louisa J., b. abt 1835, married James B. Logan; Edward A., b. abt 1840; George, b. abt 1842. William and Harriet moved with their family to Iowa somewhere between 1842 and 1845. Their next two children were born in Iowa Martha, b. abt 1845 Harriet, b. 8/17/1849 in Appanoose county, Iowa. married Joseph Hayworth 2/1870 Some time around 1870 William and Harriet Daugherty may have moved to Mason County, Illinois. Harriet (Daugherty) and Joseph Hayworth's first child, Effie Jane Hayworth is said to have been born November 1870, in Mason County, Illinois. I believe that William Daugherty and some of his children's families may have lived in Mason County, Illinois before traveling to South Dakota, Oregon and Missouri. Any help in trying to locate this family would be great. My line comes from Harriet. I would like to find where in Virginia this family came from, who William Daugherty and Harriet Beddows parents and siblings were and find where they went after leaving Appanoose county in the late 1860s or early 1870s. Hoping to hear about from someone researching this family.
