The 1880 census index is now available on CD. The FIFTY-SIX CD set covers ALL the states and is available from the LDS for $49. The 1880 census is the one which asked, among other things, place of birth for mother and father. Once you find someone in the index you can find the film at a library, the LDS Family History Centers or, for a fee, one of the online libraries like Ancestry.com. Rather than me explaining it read what Dick Eastman said in his May 31, 2001, Online Genealogy Newsletter. http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/columns/eastman/3963.asp Cheryl Rothwell LoganCty@mindspring.com

Ella Wurtzbaugh was born about 31 July 1860. A granddaughter thought she was born in Liberty, IN, but Ella's marriage record shows Logan Co., IL. On 31 Aug 1882 Ella married Lucien Bastien in Havana or Manito, Mason Co., IL. Lucien and Ella had four children: Pauline, Ezra Charles, Mino Catherine, and an infant son that did not live long. Ella died due to childbirth on 11 Sep 1891. She is buried in Walker's Grove cemetery in Crane Creek Twp., Mason Co., IL. I don't have the names of her parents. Following Ella's death Lucien Bastien married second to Ellen O'Neil on 1 July 1898. They did not have any children. Lucien Bastien was a brother of my ancestor Louise Bastien who married Frank L. Dorrell. I have the Bastien ancestry. Debby

Posted on: Mason County, IL, Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Il/Mason/10126 Surname: WURTZBAUGH, SAMPSON ------------------------- I am looking for any information on the surname WURTZBAUGH. My great-grandmother Susan Emmeline WURTZBAUGH married James Philip SAMPSON in Mason County, IL in 1881. From her death certificate I know her father's name was Michael Wurtzbaugh and family history has it that he died in the Civil War. I have 2 pictures of him, one as a younger man with a young woman, and one of him as an older man with a different, older woman, presumably a second marriage. On the back of the second picture it says "Grandma Alice and Grandpa WURTZBAUGH". I searched the LDS site today and found a Nathaniel Wurtzbaugh listed with the information that he also was married in Mason County on November 26, 1857. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Dear County List, We have now entered pages for about 80 counties in Illinois, as links to the Homepage on our website, which may be of some help to researchers who have ancestors who were members of the Primitive Baptist church in Illinois. The information regarding the members names comes from a database in our library computer which is not on-line, but the surnames serve as an index to it, to help researchers determine if they may have connections in some of our churches. The database has been (and is still being added to) compiled from original source documents, including church and association records, and obituaries - many of which are found in our shelves of bound church periodicals. To see our website, go to our homepage: http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/churches/primbap/pbl.html or go directly to the Family History Assistance page at: http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/churches/primbap/FamHist.html Sincerely, Robert L. Hi List, My great grandfather Joseph E. Jackson stated when he enlisted in Co. K, 85th Regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Infantry that his post office at time of enlistment was Topeka, Illinois in Mason Co. He served from August 27 1862 mustering outat Peoria in June 5, 1865 as a private. Could someone look up Joseph E. in the 1860 census and tell me what household he was living in? His father's given name was Andrew and his mother's Mary (Seagle). His military papers state that he, his father and mother were born in PA. He claims to have been born in "St. Pettersburg". On an old PA map I found a St. Petersburg in York Co but it is not there today and today the only St Petersburg is in Clarion Co, PA. I doubt that he was Quaker but he may have been. I would appreciate any help. Paul Price
I'm looking for information on John T. PLATT and Mary Jane SHOEMAKER. They were from the Lynchburg / Bath, Mason Co. area. On the marriage index he is listed as John PLANT, however it is PLATT. I know when they were married, but not much else. Someone sent me some census information a couple of years ago, but it has been lost. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Vickie L. Carter

Posted on: Mason County, IL, Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Mason/10125 Surname: Gordon ------------------------- Becky, this is very interesting. Rachel would be a later generation than Elizabeth (Gordon) Heston b 1826 and Leva Ann Gordon b 1825. William could possibly be a brother. Do you know where they were born? Leva Ann had sons named George and Albert and a dau named Lotta (short for Charlotte?). I am going to look at census records next week and will see what I can find. Leva Ann's oldest son (oldest listed in 1880 anyhow) was born in MA which I thought was strange, but I am going to see what I can find there too. Mardi

Elizabeth Gordon m. Mahlon Kinsey Heston (place unknown) before 1845 and all but one of their children were born in Havana, IL, beginning 1852. Elizabeth and her sister Levy were photographed in Peoria, IL. Leva Ann Gordon (55) occurs in the 1880 Mason Co. census as head of the household with George (33), Albert (30), and Lotta (22). Elizabeth and Leva Ann were both born in PA, but I don't know where. If anyone recognizes these Gordon women please contact me.
