I found this listing in the Family History Library Catalog. Note that the publisher is the Illinois State Archives. Perhaps this is what they use when you request information from the state census records. If you are missing an ancestor in Illinois early on this should help you. The microfilm, at least at the Family History Library, is sorted by name. You can request microfilm at your Family History Center. "This material indexes the state and federal censuses of 1810, 1818, 1820, 1825, 1830, 1835, 1840, 1845, 1850, 1855; executive record to 1861; election returns of 1818-1847; House and Senate journals through 1830's; early laws to 1849; and part of the Perrin Collection. Title Name index to early Illinois records Format Manuscript On Film Language English Publication Springfield, Ill. Illinois State Archives 1975 Physical 248 microfilm reels ; 16 mm." To request census information [free by email] from the state archives go to: http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/serv_sta.html#census When I made a request to test it they sent me a copy of the Illinois census page with the ancestor's name so I got several ancestors in one request because they lived in the same area. They do the same on the Civil War roster requests so you end up with all the people in the same part of the alphabet who served in that company. When you are looking at the request form you'll see they also look up death certificates, war records and other items. This is for information only. It is not an endorsement. I seriously doubt that it will be free. I don't have more information at this time. If your ancestors came through New York after 1851 it might be of use so you might keep your eye out for it. Entire Backfile of New York Times Going on the Internet The ProQuest Historical Newspapers (TM) is offering a complete backfile of the New York Times (along with other newspapers) from the first issue in 1851 through 1998, more than 3.5 million pages. Cover to cover, every page digitized, every word searchable, even the ads. Of key interest, all of the birth & marriage announcements and obituaries will be instantly retrievable. At a click genealogists can see the references in the digital images of the actual paper. Genealogical research just became a whole lot easier. This award-winning ProQuestR online information system features a user-friendly interface that allows beginners to pinpoint highly specific information (a photograph of John D. Rockefeller, for instance, or an eyewitness account of McKinley's assassination) or conduct in-depth longitudinal research (on topics like the changing status of African-Americans from antebellum days through the recent past). The interface is familiar to many; it is currently available to millions of higher education, K-12, and public library users globally.

Dr. Kane Zelle was my OB/GYN for many years before he left Springfield. I believe his first name was Charles, but I'm not sure, and the Kane came from his mother's maiden name. We discussed this, because my husband's middle name, which he uses as a first name, was also HIS mother's maiden name. The family came from around Mt. Pulaski or thereabouts, as I recall. He passed away a few years ago, and his son, Lee K. (Kane?) is an attorney in Springfield, who also has a title company. You might contact him there to see if this is the same family. Dr. Zelle's wife's name was Elizabeth.
To the list-- Thanks to Roger for catching this! All those Richard Langleys sure got confusing (the one on the census, his son, and his father!) I goofed and put in Richard's father's christening instead of his! It should have read christened 3 Dec 1821 in Morland, Westmorland, England. (His father, I think, was Richard Langley christened in 1788, married Elizabeth Winshell 29 Jul 1811 in Long Marton, Westmorland.) Thanks for catching this! Susan Hey Susan. Sure looks like the same families in your censuses, but I reckon Richard the first must have had a close encounter with a black hole when he crossed the Atlantic. That way its fine for him to be baptised in 1788, be 54 in 1870 and 59 in 1880. Ruth was only slightly affected by the calamity, and happily George and the various kids seems to have escaped altogether, Being born in Illinois is obviously beneficial. Marriages for George and Agnes LANGLEY's children were as follows: -Elizabeth LANGLEY married Samuel HICKMAN 7 May 1880 in Mason County, Illinois. Sam was the son of Margaret (SWEEZEY) and George HICKMAN. This was a second marriage for Samuel HICKMAN, the first having been to Martha J. HARDIN on 10 Jan 1864 in Mason Co, Illinois. They had two children, Louis and Clara, who are seen with Sam and Eliz. HICKMAN in Allens Grove twp, Mason County, Ill, in the 1880 Census, living a few doors down from a T. HICKMAN married to Ellen and with a young son, Clen (Glen?). She is believed to have died in 1891 and to be buried in Friend, Nebraska (not confirmed). -Jane LANGLEY married (1) Fremont NOBLE sometime between 1879 and 1883 in Saline County, NE. Where was she in the 1880 census? (2) She later married Tom POTTS, date and location not known. What happened to her after that? (Rumored to have had four daughters.) -Richard LANGLEY (son of George), married Maud FRINK. Where? When? Richard died in 1888. -George LANGLEY married Laura TURNER, daughter of Ezekial and Amy (GREGORY) TURNER. (The TURNERs were in Saline County, NE in the 1880 census). George and Laura are seen with one child, Willie (Jan 1882) in the 1900 census on Maple St. in Friend Village, Saline Co, NE, together with Laura's brother James TURNER. Where were they in 1910? In 1920, George shows up with his brother Nathan in Colorado (see below). He was shown as a widow at that time. Is this correct? When and where did Laura die? What happened to Willie (William?)? -Joseph LANGLEY never married and died in 1893. -Wesley LANGLEY is believed to have had, alternatively, two daughters, or two daughters and a son (Agnes, Albert, Margaret). Does anyone know who and where he married or what became of him? -Ira Anthony LANGLEY married Lizzie TURNER, sister to his brother George's wife Laura. They had a lot of children: James Ira (or Ira James) (son named Henry?), George Henry ("Henry"), Lloyd Emmerson (married Ruth BONSTEAD in 1926 in Colorado-children Carl, Richard, and Frank), Irvin, Amy Lucretia (married Hoyt Ernest STICE in 1923 in Colorado), Hazel, Alena Mable (died 1930, buried in Colorado), Bessie, Robert. Does anyone know more about these families and their descendants? -Nathan LANGLEY married Amy HENSON in 1903 in Wilber (Saline Co.) NE. Amy's parents were James F. HENSON and Anna Maria GOLDEN. Children were Glenn LANGLEY (married Dorothy DOUGLASS in Colorado in 1931-three children, Duane, Kenneth, and Margaret; Glenn died in 1996); Merna LANGLEY (married (1) LeRoy SHERARD in 1927; (2) Ben BOLIN in 1937, (3) George HALVERSON in 1952-three children, Nathan, Francis, and Elaine-Merna died in 1994); Delmar ("Pat") LANGLEY (married (1) Grace BUCHANAN and (2) Connie JACOBS-- Six daughters-Loretta and Louise with Grace and Claudette, Carolyn, Barbara, and Sharon with Connie. Nathan and Amy LANGLEY's family is seen in Washington County, Colorado, in the 1920 census, together with Nathan's mother Agnes and his brother George. Where was ! Nathan LANGLEY in the 1910 census? -Frank LANGLEY born about 1881, died about 1883-84. When did he die? Where is he buried? -Margaret Agnes LANGLEY, born about 1883-1885. The family records say she was born in Illinois, but this does not compute since her parents moved to Nebraska about 1880. She married (--?--) NOBLE (perhaps related to her sister Jane's husband). One relative says she had a daughter. She was reported to be in Everson, Washington State in 1954 at the time of the death of her brother Nathan (she would have been about 70 at that time).
